... read more

This morning we plan to take a boat ride out to the island in Lake Bled, the one (I don’t think there are any other islands in the lake) with the iconic Assumption of Maria Church on it. It seems that the system here involves the boatman waiting for the boat to fill up (with people) and then off we go. He says we need to pay him in cash as we get on to come back, otherwise he‘ll leave us there. There’s no shortage of boats out here, plus paddle boarders and swimmers. Some of the people rowing don't look like they’ve got too much idea what they’re doing and I suspect a few of them might be in for a longish day. One of them nearly crashes into us; we’re a lot bigger than ... read more

Today we’ve booked tickets to visit Vintgar Gorge which is about five kilometres north of Lake Bled. Issy didn’t sleep too well so it looks like I’m on my own. It’s drizzly and a bit grey, and the clouds are down on the mountains which is making them look a bit spooky. We read last night that there’s a free shuttle bus from town out to the Gorge. There must be a lot of people who want to go there; the buses leave about every three minutes. Our Gorge entry tickets are for a very specific time, which is maybe not too surprising given that bus loads full of visitors clearly turn up to get in there every few minutes, plus more in cars, on bikes, and maybe even some hikers. The walkway through the Gorge ... read more

It’s raining, which is somewhat of a novelty; we’re pretty sure the last time it rained on us personally was when we were in Toronto more than three weeks ago. But there are advantages. It seems that wasps don’t like rain. These pesky creatures seem to be everywhere here. We’ve been very careful to keep our hands over the tops of our Fanta bottles; I suspect your day wouldn’t improve if one snuck in when you weren’t looking and you swallowed it. In the words of the young American girl in front of us in the ice cream queue last night “if even a tiny trace of those nuts gets into my chocolate ice cream my throat will close up and I’ll die in screaming agony on the ground right here in front of you” - ... read more

This morning we decide to visit Tivoli Park which is only a few hundred metres across the river from our hotel. We walk through the very attractive Congress Square which is surrounded by classical architectural icons including the Slovenian Philharmonic Building and the University of Ljubljana. A few hundred metres further on is the eye wateringly ugly and completely contrasting Trg Republike. The ever reliable Google Maps describes this as a “plaza to showcase socialist modernist architecture in 1960, fringed by landmark towers”. Hmmm. The two “landmark towers” are on one side opposite the National Assembly Building of Slovenia. The architects who designed this lot clearly did their training at a kindergarten where all they were given to play with were a bunch of dark grey Lego bricks. There’s not a curve or any shred of ... read more

This morning we’ve booked tickets to Ljubljana Castle which sits high on the hill overlooking the city, and dominates the skyline. But first a coffee stop. We’re not sure what the impressive looking building at the base of the hill on the other side of the square from the coffee shop is. But it’s OK, we’ll soon find out because there’s a large QR code on the facade. Well that’s what it looked like, although in hindsight I suspect I might have looked more than a bit stupid pointing my phone hopefully at what turns out to be an ancient decoration that just happens to be made of small black and white tiles. Anyway there’s a small drinking fountain right next to it. This wouldn't normally be worthy of comment, but this one’s a statue of ... read more

We’re up at the crack of dawn for our early morning flight to Trieste. The lady at the check in desk tells us that downtown Trieste is famous for its coffee. This is nice to know, but if we find ourselves in downtown Trieste later in the morning it will only be famous in the Sheehan household as the place we ended up in when we missed the turnoff to Slovenia. We can see Venice out the plane window just before we land, well we think it might be Venice. It’s ridiculously hazy. Our flight took off an hour and a half late because Rome Airport was closed earlier this morning, allegedly due to “fog”. I didn’t know you could get fog when it was nearly forty degrees. We check over our hire car carefully for ... read more

The Triglav National Park is the oldest, greatest and only national park in Slovenia. Bohinj is at the heart of it. The protected natural and cultural area surrounding the highest Slovenian mountain, Triglav. Due to the sensitive natural environment and its fragility, the park is also a part of Unesco’s Man and the Biosphere Programme Lake Bohinj is Slovenia's largest permanent lake - it is 4.2 km long (2.6mi) and 1km width max (0.62mi) - If you are wondering why 'permanent' it is because there is the Cerknica lake that almost disappears by cycle (when I went there was almost no water) It is located in the heart of the Julian Alps protected as the Triglav National Park - it is between the summits of Vogel (South) and Prsivec (North). Church of St. John the Baptist ... read more
