I've spent the last 2 days touring around the city with my wonderful tourguide Simona. Yesterday we were a little tired after partying all night, but we managed to get out and see Preserno Trg (the main square) and a little bit of the city. Today we saw more, including parts of the old city and this huge park that is kind of in the middle of the city that is very beautiful!
Its been really nice having a tour guide, especially one that knows the city so well and has the same sort of interests as I do. While many Slovenians do speak English, most of the time it is fairly broken, so I have been SO greatful to have a translator as well, especially for sorting out things like my apartment and cell phone... (yes, I am finally breaking down and getting one... go ahead, laugh at my hipocracy! I am!... if you were here though you'd realize that without it I'd have no social life... so...). Once in a while it's good to be a tourist tho... in cafe's and restaurants, if two tables sit down at the same time, one tourist and one local, the tourists
Ljubljanica River
Very beautiful to walk along... there are lots of little cafe's and markets, especially in the old town will get served first!
One of the things I like most about it here are all the open air and outdoor cafes and restaurants. The weather has been beautiful the past 2 days, so there have been tons of people outdoors eating and drinking throughout the day. Its very lively! Today was especially lively because it was the first day of school for high school and elementary kids. They only had a part day, so from about 11am on there were tons of kids in the streets all very excited and dressed in there best!
It seems to that, at least in the warmer months, there is always something to do or to see here. There are stages still set up all over the city from the concerts they have all summer, and there are still concerts scheduled through September as well. And because Ljubljana is the capital, it is also host to the country's Opera house, main Theater house, 2 national art galleries, and a ton of other things like political buildings etc that come along with a capital city. And despite the older architecture in some areas and the fact that it is an old European
View with the Castle in the background
...I have yet to hit up the castle, but soon enough! city, it definitly has a modern vibe to it that is a lot of fun! I've been told though that through October, November, and January it gets pretty tiresome tho... there is a lot of snow and because the city is in a valley it fills with fog and can be dreary for a while. I'll save things like going to the theater, opera, and jazz clubs for during those months I think!
Anyway, I am really looking forward to moving into my apartment on Monday. I'll post pictures of it when I do! It's nice that rent is pretty cheap here... very cheap compared to home (even though all the Slovenians think it is expensive).
I hope all are well! Adijo!
