Tricked you! We are not in Kranjska Gora as the placings state but we are pretty close. That’s pretty close in driving, motorcycling, push biking, in-line skating, motorised wheelchair, hand operated wheelchair and cross-country ski training things terms. All these things passed us at some time today! Not so close in walking terms. As usual it was the uphill morning push, tough but spectacular when we levelled out a bit. Quaint villages, a few cows and breathtaking views (or was that the uphill slog!) back, along and forward make the gradient well worthwhile. Much of today was on road and bike path which although hard on the feet makes for quick walking and the km melt away pretty quickly. In addition our accommodation is short of the official end of the trail which we consider a ... read more
Kransky sausage, better than they look!
How good is walking in Slovenia?
Very good.

My Slovenian cultural attaché has informed me that it’s not ‘Kransky Gora’ but ’Kranjska Gora’ despite the fact we have ‘kransky’ sausage and not ‘kranjska’ sausage! So if you are corresponding with Julie use the ‘Kranjska’, anyone else ‘Kransky’ seems fine. We walked back into Slovenia today after being driven back towards Tarvisio. Did not drive the entire way as it would have meant walking through the streets of a fairly large town. So along quite a gentle track used by heaps of cyclists and described as several paths (Juliana, Alpina…) Some variations but always scenic and green. The National Park and the giant slalom were features but the looming and omnipresent mountains still manage to steal the show. We also cut the distance because we could and because Julie’s foot isn’t terrific. Some stages are ... read more
And that’s the rest of breakfast and lunch there.

Yes it’s still Kranjska Gora and it’s still today but because our walk was short, easy and quick we decided to walk to the nearby lake. We have a couple of big days ahead of us but walking without backpacks and with no encumbrances at all meant it was a stroll rather than a walk. It also enabled us to find a restaurant off the tourist path a little so we may get something a tad more traditional than pizza. To be fair though we have had only the pizza and it was really good and in fact the pizza that we’ve seen has looked good. Most pizzeria here have big wood fired ovens and the aromas are quite enticing. But we will see. But for those accustomed to late night reading I’ll attempt to fill ... read more
Jasna, just above Kranjska Gora.
An expresso and some cake. Let me think about that!
At Jasna Lake. Very impressive scenery.

Over 3 hours at the bus stop. Not exactly fun time. We did the walk pretty easily, pushed ourselves along to get there with time to spare as our last host had checked the timetables and had said the bus left at 1:46. We saw a bus come and go (just) at about 12:45 whilst we were having an icy pole so I think the host’s research was not correct. Anyway from what I can work out the next bus is just after 4 and if that doesn’t work out there’s one a little after 6. Today’s walk climbed steeply from the the start and got us to our highest point for quite a few days. The scenery remains spectacular, with soaring mountains, steep sided gorges, streams and waterfalls dotted along the trail and the ever ... read more
Probably 10 minutes into the day’s walk. All uphill.
But the views make the uphill plod worth it.
Lots of uphill today, 900 m elevation gain.

We departed Kobarid in much better weather than the previous day. Our first stop on the way to Kranjska Gora was Slap (waterfall) Virje. We turned off the main road onto a small trail which drove through a golf course and then into a small town. We weren’t quite sure we were going in the right direction but eventually encountered a couple of people walking the same direction we were heading and then saw a sign pointing to a car park. From the car park it was about a five minute walk downhill before we reached the beautiful waterfall. The waterfall was quite strange as the flow splits in two just before it drops off the edge. This creates a dual waterfall with blue ponds, which are connected by shallower water, at the base of each. ... read more

Europe is blanketed with snow and I have been having more adventures. So sit back and enjoy the ride because, as London transport services have been saying a lot recently, this might take a while. We went skiing in Slovenia because a) it was cheap b) it was easy to get to and c) I like the name of its capital city Ljubjlana. So Kate caught a train from Austria, I caught an EasyJet flight from London Stansted, and by 9pm on Thursday we were both at our hotel in Podkoren, near Kransjka Gora, overawed by a metre of snow and giant icicles outside our front door. We hired skis the next morning and tried learning how to use them on a baby track before deciding we needed a goal. Italy seemed like a good one, ... read more

In pretty much the same way as patterns started developing to my holidaying trends, even my annual week-long ski breaks fell into a similar mode, and in time-honoured tradition of going on one pricey ski break, followed by a budget option, January 2008 was the turn of the budget ski trip, and the location for it was the picturesque ski resort of north-western Slovenia, Kranjska Gora. Nestled in the midst of the Julian Alps and a stone's throw from both the Italian and Austrian borders, this ski town had been blighted by the lack of reliable snowfall in 2007, which made skiing there the following season seem like myself and snowboarding nephew were taking a gamble of sorts regarding the snow record. Well, the resort itself was pretty enough even without a healthy fall of fresh ... read more

wow. well, today i'm feeling what can only be described as fragile. last night was the big giant birthday japes, and suffice to say it was celebrated accordingly. these slovene folk certainly know what they are doing when it comes to partying. rent a cabin type thing in the middle of nowhere, get more alcohol than all the pubs in welshpool could muster, and go. and by go, i mean GO. so yes, it was a brilliant night, met some more wonderful people, although my recollection of them is pretty misty. still, ace. it was great that despite the fact i'm a long long way from home, i still managed to end up doing the same thing that i do at most parties, which is going out to a car with a couple of others to ... read more

aaaaaaaaaace. it's bloody cold in this wonderful place. jerry is currently on an inversion table, and it looks pretty entertaining to be fair. anyway, token recap of the last 24 hours. getting to stansted was a pain, and it cost me a stupid amount of money, resulting in me then worrying about saving money for when i get back, which is pretty lame, as i dont want to worry about that whilst i'm here, as it's my week of no worrying. but yes, got to stansted, waited around for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages, and then got my booty on a plane. i love flying. i've said it about 793 times, but flying, especially over cities at night, is my favourite thing to do. we had a bit of turbulence, which i quite liked strangely enough. it's a strange sensation, ... read more
