Tolmin, the only Slovenian town I can pronounce. At least I think I can. I will admit that I’m not practicing much. A tourist approached me today and asked if I spoke English! I answered ‘of course’ in my best European, she asked a few questions and I answered. I’m sure she thought my English was rather good. Short walk today but still plenty of up and plenty of down. The track designer must share that Wainwright trait of not going where you expect to go. Starting destination and finishing destination are both at lake level, literally 24 m of vertical separation yet we do ten times that in elevation! You would think a scenic route around the lake and along the river. Well you would be very wrong. Up the hills, through the forest and ... read more

Well we are close to Tolmin, so I think I have the region correct. Last night’s accomodation was a private home very much in the BnB category. Run by a husband and wife team, he searched for and picked the mushrooms, she did everything else. With little English (but enough) and lots of graciousness she managed to look after both of us. She even volunteered to drive us to the town where we thought we would have to take the train. That saved us a walk of a couple of km and it was quicker than the train - win/win for us. About 17 km distance wise with the now standard loading of almost 900m ascent/descent made for another day of really sweating it out as the temperatures have again risen. It is delightful in the ... read more

If you see me walking around and saying " In a hundred years from now it won't make a difference" you know Im not in my calmest mood. This mantra for some reason keeps me calm when I am dealing with high pressure situations which seems to be more often then not. As you can see from our pictures, we are just in nirvana and stress is the farthest thing from my mind. Four little houses, great views, amazing weather that ranges from warm to rainy ( a great change from the middle east heat). Paraglider's sailing over the mountain crest and mornings with the sun shining telling us its time to wake up. We try and do at least one hike a day. Today we decided that we would take a ride to a ... read more

We left our campsite on the Soka River to travel to Lake Boheme, getting there was a treat , we drove onto a vehicle train that took us through various tunnels and through the mountain range it was really strange as we went through the tunnels still sitting in the van, but enjoy breakfast along the way. The journey took 40 mins to reach Lake Boheme. We were recommended a camp site on the lake side but it was pretty crammed in so we discovered another along a river. We set up and had our first dip in the river it was oh so cold, but so refreshing as it was a scorcha of a day. We stayed a couple of nights , one night we had the fresh trout caught by matt in the river ... read more

Same old , Same Old for the Flying gang , misus John , who was up early for his Hike, and Alex , Antje, Jeff were moving on to Austria for flying ,as the conditons here were to stable for them, For the non flyers that means that that they are not able to stay up for long periods of time and usually flying consists of a "top to Botom". Glen the hiker decided transport up today was the go , no hiking today. Lyds chilled , bit of washing required to be done. Afterwards Waterfall bound , found a track down to one of the waterfalls , where you couls get yourself in the water and right up to the waterfall , a place to bring Matt to and try and get him to ... read more

The Gang of Flyers got ready for transport to arrive , altough Glen and Alex decided that they would hike up the mountain with their paragliders , brave men. Lyd got ready for the 3 hire hike , what a beautiful route , taking in the River , Waterfalls , Medows , Villages , and ruins with butterflys bouncing along the pathway by your feet, the heat pretty intense as well but a throughly rewarding walk. Matt again had a fly starting to enjoy again . We sucommed to a freshly made pancake round 5pm , Lyds opting for the same one , Matt going to the Meat and Veg one which got the tumbs up. Later that evening , Matt and I went on a litle walk to the River for a Cold soak ... read more

Welcome to Slovenia. We have a passenger with us today , Glen from Christchurch New Zealand, he was competing in the Chez open. Glen is travelling with us to Fly in Slovenia and meeting up with his friend in a couple of weeks in Switzerland. Slovenia is just beautiful , it is stunning were we are. The camp site is located on the river "soka " which comes down from the Alps the water is so clear and the most amazing aqua colour just stunning. We may also think we have landed on the set of "Dances with Wolves" and Kevin Coster at any minute is going to be riding up on his horse to take me away for a life in the mountains- see photo attached , but reality sucks its "JOHN" from Oxford ... read more

Siesta Yesterday was scary......we all went unconscious at about 4.30 pm after a hard day on the archeological sites and could not wake up......jet lag kicks in. This morning I woke at 4am to jagged throat and tap nose (you were right David ) but not about to let a summer cold slow me down! So after slow breakfast of Pasta Dura toast and Peanut Butter, we went to the markets to pick up fresh ingredients for our home made dinner tonight, and a walk around the rambling laneways around Piazza Farnese. Then we head off to St Peters. So many nightmare stories about huge cues so very happy to rock up and straight to the top of the line and through security.....and the girls came prepared with long legs and sleeves so we were stright ... read more

Spent the day cycling up the Soca valley, beside the river Soca, which is a turquoise green glacial river. The valley is very beautiful - through wooded mountains. Lots of canoeing, hiking and biking around here. Stopped in a cafe to try the local speciality of the valley, which turned out to look like a steamed cornish pasty filled with apple, nuts and cinnamon and covered in syrup - ideal cycling fare. Valley has a turbulent past - lots of WW1 graves and battle sites.. Weather improved dramatically. Richard peddaling along with solar panels drapped over panniers. Only takes a week to charge four batteries! Mileage(?) so far 436 Km. Planning to move south tomorrow, with a fleeting visit to Italy.... read more

Arrived safely in Klagenfurt, bikes intact thanks to careful handling by Ryan Air. Couple of nice days around the lakes of Austria and then the first mountain pass into Slovenia. 18% gradient appears to be the only road sign the authorities have! Diane walked to Slovenia and was serviously annoyed that Richard had turned down a tractor ride to the top of the pass and international border point. Three days of rain followed, including two nights of torrential rain. Tent held up well. Lake Bled & Bohinje beautiful, but better in the sun. All farming very rural and traditional. Just been to excellent WW1 museum in Kobarid. Not usually our sort of thing, but very moving. Staying here for a day or two at nice campsite with good food and beer and taking a day ... read more
