I had to decide between two caves today... the easy to get to, touristy ones... or the off-the-path ones. Now, 99% of the time I'd go with the off-the-path... but having just spoken to another backpacker who spent forever trying to find the path to the off-the-path caves (haha, oh dear) I decided to play it safe. Had a wonderful lunch at the little sandwhich place across the road (paninis or sandwhich, 1.99 euro? I'm happy) and then went to catch the bus to Postojna, about an hour south-west of Ljubljana. The bus ride was nice - great scenery, passing through sleepy little towns in the mountains. One part was particularly steep with sharp curves - I really wish I had my camera out because the signs were epic - they were warning motorcyclists about sharp ... read more

Postojna Monday 25th April url="http://www.flickr.com/photos/whereissteve/5784048584/" title="The Caves At Postojna by WhereIsSteve, on Flickr"img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5023/5784048584_a8cae7a495.jpg" width="425" height="350" alt="The Caves At Postojna" align = right The caves at Postojna are one of the largest cave systems in Europe. It’s a limestone cave system with more than 20km. of spectacular caverns of stalactites and stalagmites. They are well worth a visit. A couple of people from the hostel where I’m staying in Ljubljana have done all the work in finding out how to get there and back so I cheekily invite myself along. Getting there is actually quite easy from Ljubljana. {Getting to most places in Slovenia is quite easy – it’s a small country with good transport links}. There are... read more

Cerknica - Carnaval time

So after a few hours sleep in Ljubljana, I headed off to check out carnaval in Cerknica. In contrast to the carnaval celebrations the night before, carnaval in Cerknica was much like the Christmas Parade back home in Auckland - just with the theme of the day differeing slightly. Families lined the sidewalks, watching various costume clad groups marching by, with the main happening or theme being a witch, who according to legend is drawn out of the town's lake and then paraded around town. The parade finishes with the witch being safely stowed away until the coming year.... It was very good, but apart from when a few horses bolted loose and charged towards the section of crowd that I was sitting in, I was in a zombie like state that to my shame, probably ... read more

November 8th 2010

Friday noon. There I am, lying in bed, netbook in my lap, surfing and waiting for the clouds to clear. No use getting up and heading for the woods if it's overcast. The lighting conditions do not favour wildlife photography today, all I'd get is a fuzzy mess. It's a wolf, I swear! And that's a bear! Yeah, right, if you say so... I occasionally glance out the window and across the balcony to see if the sky has cleared. Nope. No such luck. Suddenly, some brown specks enter my field of vision. I blink to make sure my eyes aren't deceiving me. I jump up, attach my canon of a lens to the Rebel, assume stealth mode and budge the window ajar. The flecks wince. Are they supposed to do that? I pull the zoom ... read more

I love to ride my bike! Thats all I can say. We left our little abode, turned right and started riding. Fields of corn, sunflowers, creeks and lots or rain clouds. I was just so happy riding on the winding road but i know that Jeff was kvelling to do some heavy off road biking. After about two hours there was a very small sign that I happened to miss (what a suprize) that read: Stanjel 2 km. I looked at Jeff, I looked at the MOUNTAIN. What could I do?- 25 years of marriage I guess it's time to give in so I told Jeff: "only if I get some coffee up at the castle" As a good friend of mine once said. "If you want coffee go to Italy!" Made it up the hill ... read more

Hi everyone again! Big news! Tonight after coming home from our walk, showering kids, etc.... Mia lost her first tooth! It has been wobbly well before we left home, but it got to the stage where we thought she couls swallow it. So I pulled it out. Basically it popped out by itself. Mia was very shocked but excited that finally she was in a league like Alex, the big girl league! Of course this made Sienna start to cry because she has not lost a tooth! Its a bit of deja vu! I have attached some photos of our Slovenia trip, just a few to get you in the mood! We visited Stefan Majcan and his family yesterday with Opa (AKA translator)! Seriously there were many things they asked me, that blew me away! They ... read more

16th September Our beautiful campsite was closing today so we had to leave. I was having so much fun playing badminton with my Dad and brothers. Stupid campsite! PE today was running around Lake Bled. There were signs everywhere saying we couldn’t either take bikes nor do wheelies when you were biking - we weren’t sure. So we just had to try and control ourselves on our bikes, it was very difficult. We drove to a place called Postojna which has some caves. We meet some nice Australians at the camp in Bled and they told us of a campsite that was open near the caves so we decided to go. Found the campground in the middle of a forest and it was a bit spooky because there was no one here. Apart from one tent. ... read more

I unfurled my sleeping bag, got in, positioned my backpack to act as a pillow and settled down for the night on the hard concrete floor. I just hoped there wouldn’t be any rats. Sleeping rough was something I’d strangely wanted to try for a long time. Just to see what it’s like. For an experience. It’s hard to explain to people why you’d want to do something that homeless people are forced to do every night, but there was just some desire present in me. Anyway, it was almost one in the morning when the train had arrived in Postojna. That gave me a good enough excuse. I had set off from Venice at around nine, after a few short hours looking around the bustling city, and now I found myself here, stuck in small-town ... read more
