After the 1989 Velvet Revolution and subsequent 1993 partition of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it seems apparent that the Czech Republic took the nicer cities in Bohemia and Moravia while Slovakia got the gem of the Tatra Mountains. Hard to say who got the better deal. Spent a few days climbing in Slovakia's High Tatra Mountains National Park and checking out a castle. Today I arrived in Vienna. $1 ≈ 0.79€ Mt. Rysy I had previously contacted a guide through the Tatra Mountains Guide Service about day climbs of Rysy and Gerlachovský štít, the highest peaks in Poland and Slovakia respectively. Ervin called me at the pension after my arrival last Thursday and we established a pickup time of 7:30 am Friday morning which was nice as it allowed me to get breakfast ... read more

Published: January 24th 2012Europe » Slovakia » Presov Region » PresovI should have guessed it wasn’t going to be my day when I balanced my sunglasses on my head in Levoca and then smashed them in half getting onto the bus. The day was planned to be one of life’s rites of passage – going to see my first football match in Europe. I had identified Tatran Presov v Artmedia Petrzalka as the occasion for this event. In anticipation, on arrival in Presov, I checked into the most expensive hotel in town – nearly £20 for an unrivalled view of Tesco. I spotted posters on lamp-posts advertising the game and walked the route from hotel to ground. The only decision now was how to fill the 24 hours until the match. But first a late-afternoon snooze. When I woke at about 6, I put on the ... read more
The snow began to fall when we were about half an hour shy of the Slovakian border. The falling snowflakes made the darkened landscape look surreal and dreamlike as they fell softly onto the windshield. I was hypnotised, but only until I realised that snow down here meant deep snow in the High Tatras. Having grown up in Australia, snow is a novelty that turns me into a 5 year old with ADHD. There is of course snow in Australia but seeing it usually requires a minimum 2 hour drive into the mountains. My excitement grew as the road rose and fell over the three small mountain passes that stood between us and Poprad. We made slow progress on serpentine roads that wound through snow covered pine forests, the only source of light coming from ... read more
Slovakia: Hiking in the Tatras Mountains, and Birthday in Bratislava
Published: November 21st 2011Europe » Slovakia » Presov Region » ZdiarAfter the feast of sport helped time fly even faster, I wasn’t long before I was sauntering out of the office with a smug grin as people muttered ‘3 weeks off?! But he has only just started! Lucky b%stard!’. In leaving, I also left behind my Kensal Rise flat for the last time as Ben is becoming a grown up and moving in with his girlfriend. Well done that man! I got to the airport without any problems and first stop: Krakow. I found my hostel, dumped my backpack and went exploring. Wow. Krakow is beautiful. The old town with the main square (the largest in Europe so I am told) was truly stunning. I took several photos and was already looking forward to coming back here with Leah, Rachelle and Clay in a couple of ... read more
Slovakian Tatras
Published: July 15th 2011Europe » Slovakia » Presov Region » High Tatras » Strbské PlesoHappily the bus from Zakopane, Poland to Poprad, Slovakia showed up on time but there was a huge traffic jam on the way to the border as apparently the road to the border is shared with one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Zakopane area, the lake Morskie Oko. The traffic jam wasn't stop and go; it was more like stop and stop. Luckily the bus passed the jammed part of the road and it delivered me at Poprad Aquacity water park, and the first thing I did after checking into my hotel was head back to the water park. This isn't really a Kapolei-style water park. It doesn't have nearly as many different types of attractions and the water slides are lame. It's more about relaxation and there are a number of thermal ... read more
A sensitive mountain nature
Published: April 4th 2011Europe » Slovakia » Presov Region » High Tatras » Strbské PlesoOne little nugget of comedy from that horrible day at Demänovská Dolina last summer has been itching ever since, which was during my conversation on the train with the hung over Leeds United fans who had come to see Leeds play Košice, when I told them "I really want to go climb a mountain today", to which one of them gestured listlessly towards the perennially majestic backdrop of the High Tatras and replied "there's enough o' them round 'ere". I had never been to the High Tatras, with no real reason or motivation to go as well as the constant fear-mongering of locals in Prague about people dying there. Last weekend, I suddenly had a realisation that my life was the most boring thing ever, spending all day on a couch teaching people (or waiting for ... read more
It was freezing the day that we found ourselves in Levoca. I think it was the day when the voices of those who had said, 'what, your travelling through Europe in the middle of winter - your crazy' reverberated through my head. However, the numb cheeks, dry mouth and chilled bones were all worth the while. My one regret though, was that I couldn't convince my partner in crime to walk up the hill to the massive church that overlooks the town. Although having said that, I was quite happy to jump on the first heated bus that came by...... read more
After a 6 hour delay due to a fatal car accident, we finally arrived at our point of destination, Poprad. We spent the next three days there exploring the mountainous region around Poprad. Having been raised next to the beach, mountains are not my forte, which would explain why I climbed a mountain with a pair of running shoes, that and stupidity. But it made for a lot of fun, including several turns and tumbles. The height of my stupidity was where I tried to walk across an extremely steep ski slope. I made it to the middle of it and started to think that I could reach the track on the other side when my legs decided to take on a life of their own and I found myself hurtling down the ski slope on ... read more
A bit of snowboarding in Slovakia
Published: January 21st 2011Europe » Slovakia » Presov Region » High TatrasSo after Christmas Eve in Bratislava, it was Christmas Day transversing Slovakia with an Italian in a train, while it was snowing. An interesting way to spend Christmas, but suprisingly not so bad either. We made the most of it and treated oursevles to some very good Slovak beer, while watching the snowfall over half of Slovakia, which in December at least, consists of different shades of white. 7 hours or so later I found myself and my rumbling stomach at my last stop over, so I headed off to find a restauraunt. It appeared that everything was going to be shut on Christmas Day as well and I was about to give up as time was of the essence, when two young ladies walked up behind me at the traffic lights I was waiting at. ... read more

Published: September 9th 2010Europe » Slovakia » Presov Region » Tatranská LomnicaWhere to start !! Met Mirka in Vienna and saw U2, fab as ever of course then the train to Poprad where her sisters Boyfriend Marek picked us up and we went to the High Tatras mountains. Followed by eating and drinking on a grand scale. To say Slovakians are friendly and generous is an under statement. To start with you must have a shot to say hello, then to balance the legs, then for many other reasons finished by one to say good night. i was wrecked , dont remember anything after trying to say orange juice in Slovakian!! my glass was never empty and the eating is non stop, as Marek said Slovakians only have one meal a day from 8am to 8pm !! Went up to the high tatras with marek up to ... read more
