Day 89, 22.06.19. Saturday. So I'm finally in Slovakia and the people here are so nice and helpful, everyone I ask with exeption for a really drunk girl helped me out a lot, some even dropped everything they did to help me out trying to find some shelter for the night. And the best part is that they refused completely when I tried to give the some money to compensate for their time. The girls in Bratislava are really beautiful and adorable, they actually smile at me in this country. How cool is that? But eventually I found out that most of the hotels and hostels was fully booked due to some MMA-event that I didn't know about. Same thing happened in 2011 when I was traveling to Gøteborg in Sweden, was trying to find a ... read more

Short and sweet entry today - super lazy day because I wanted to give my throat flare up a bit of a rest... also I just didn't have the heart to deal with rural Slovakian trains again haha. After that I was back in the pedestrian/main area where I got a beer and set up shop on one of the patios to do a bit of reading and people watching once more. It's a great way to spend a few hours. On my way back to the hostel I got an ice cream... halfway through my eating it, a wasp landed in ... read more

The day was planned to be one of life’s rites of passage – going to see my first football match in Europe. I had identified Tatran Presov v Artmedia Petrzalka as the occasion for this event. In anticipation, on arrival in Presov, I checked into the most expensive hotel in town – nearly £20 for an unrivalled view of Tesco. I spotted posters on lamp-posts advertising the game and walked the route from hotel to ground. The only decision now was how to fill the 24 hours until the match. But first a late-afternoon snooze. When I woke at about 6, I put on the ... read more

After finishing my class in Poland, I headed back to Slovakia. Sylvia and her family came to Lublin to pick me up. After one day back in Roznava, Sylvia and I headed to Presov, Slovakia so I could attend a research conference on religious geography in Europe. The conference went well and on the third day, we had a small group tour of some of the most important religious architecture in Northeast Slovakia. This region has a group of small wooden churches that were placed on the UNESCO World Hertiage List last summer while I was here. These churches are unique in the world for their architecture, construction, and in a few cases, for the specific denomination that uses them. The Slovak Greek Catholic Church is a very small Eastern Rite Catholic Church that exists in ... read more
