Wednesday July 10 – I got up early and took the bus at 8:30. We arrived at 9:40 and I had a 10 minute connection before the bus to Kosice. A guy asked me something but I told him I didn’t speak Slovak. A girl translated and said he drives a minivan to Kosice and that some of them were going to go with him as it was faster, if I wanted to go. I agreed and walked with them over to his van. I sat next to the driver and it was a pretty quick ride. We got in around 10:20 and I went to the train station next door and bought my ticket to Budapest for tomorrow. Much like plane flights, it was cheaper to buy a roundtrip ticket than a one way journey. I was also given a seat reservation, which seemed less stressful. The train leaves at 6:02am tomorrow, quite early.
Next stop was walking to the hostel. I had to walk through the old town to get there, which was nice. I could hear the musical fountain as I passed, and it was playing Mariah Carey, Hero. Next it moved on to the Lion King.
Just music, no words. It was then that I noticed that everyone was staring at me. This seems to be a general trend on this trip. This even makes the Swiss look like amateurs in the staring world. Why do they stare? Is it my good looks? My bright shining teeth? General physique? The oddness of a girl carrying two backpacks? A girl traveling alone? Were my shorts too short? Were they too long? Did they notice I haven’t shaved in a while? Was my hair astray? I guess I’ll never know. I just walked on. The hostel was outside the old town and above a bar, but it was quiet. My room looked a bit like it was inside an attic. It was ok but the windows barely opened. It got quite hot in there by the evening. The woman working there was quite nice and said she would get me a tram ticket for the morning, which would be helpful so early on, rather than walking and missing my train. I booked my accommodation in Budapest before I went out. I used airbnb and got a small studio apartment. Really excited to have my own space. I got
set up and then headed out on the town. I walked around the cathedral and then different parts of the old town. I bought a sandwich and ate it in the park with the musical fountain. Kind of fun. I walked over to the Eastern Slovak museum, but couldn’t get interested, so didn’t go in. But I did want to go into the archaeological area. I got there and sat down on a bench to read about it, and then this guy asked if he could sit next to me. I said he could and then he stated talking to me in English. He is a Believer and proceeded to talk to me about Jesus and his life for about 30 minutes. He was a nice guy, but a little too Jesus heavy, probably even for another Believer. But, Jesus loves me, so that’s good. I finally found a time to excuse myself and go into the site. It is on the main street and was discovered in 1996 when they were building. It’s pretty cool stuff. The old entrance to the city and a sewer system. I am so in the wrong business. I should have studied archaeology. I
love ruins. I always have. Can’t get enough. I don’t know why I didn’t become an archaeologist. Or a dancer. From there, I went into some stores and Tesco department store, where I paid for a pee. I tried to see another museum but just missed the last entry time. I went down a street filled with shops still making things in the old way. I even bought something, which I never do. I stopped back at the hotel, and the woman there gave me my ticket for the tram and the tram times. So nice. Later, she even gave me a key to the shower room so I could lock it and have the whole thing to myself. I didn’t even know that was possible. Sweet. I dropped some things off, went out lighter, and went to the mall for dinner. Did I have a fast food quesadilla from Meixcoo? Yes, I did. Next stop was the grocery store, conveniently in the same building. I bought a yogurt dessert, some water, and a yogurt for the morning. Went home, repacked and skyped with Jeroen. Tried to sleep early, but it was one of those nights where I was tired
but did not sleep well. I woke up a lot looking at the time, paranoid I would miss my train. Long night.

Jenn, your quesadilla question-and-answer totally made me laugh. :) Then made me a little hungry.... What did you buy in the shop?
