The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes was formed in 1918; its name was changed to Yugoslavia in 1929. Various paramilitary bands resisted Nazi Germany's occupation and division of Yugoslavia from 1941 to 1945, but fought each other and ethnic opponents as much as the invaders. The military and political movement headed by Josip TITO (Partisans) took full control of Yugoslavia when German and Croatian separatist forces were defeated in 1945. Although Communist, TITO's new government and his successors (he died in 1980) managed to steer their own path between the Warsaw Pact nations and the West for the next four and a half decades. In 1989, Slobodan MILOSEVIC became president of the Serbian Republic and his ultranationalist calls for Serbian domination led to the violent breakup of Yugoslavia along ethnic lines. In 1991, Croatia, Slovenia, and Macedonia declared independence, followed by Bosnia in 1992. The remaining republics of Serbia and Montenegro declared a new Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) in April 1992 and under MILOSEVIC's leadership, Serbia led various military campaigns to unite ethnic Serbs in neighboring republics into a "Greater Serbia." These actions led to Yugoslavia being ousted from the UN in 1992, but Serbia continued its - ultimately unsuccessful - campaign until signing the Dayton Peace Accords in 1995. MILOSEVIC kept tight control over Serbia and eventually became president of the FRY in 1997. In 1998, a small-scale ethnic Albanian insurgency in the formerly autonomous Serbian province of Kosovo provoked a Serbian counterinsurgency campaign that resulted in massacres and massive expulsions of ethnic Albanians living in Kosovo by FRY forces and Serb paramilitaries. The MILOSEVIC government's rejection of a proposed international settlement led to NATO's bombing of Serbia in the spring of 1999 and to the eventual withdrawal of Serbian military and police forces from Kosovo in June 1999. UNSC Resolution 1244 in June 1999 authorized the stationing of a NATO-led force (KFOR) in Kosovo to provide a safe and secure environment for the region's ethnic communities, created a UN Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to foster self-governing institutions, and reserved the issue of Kosovo's final status for an unspecified date in the future. In 2001, UNMIK promulgated a constitutional framework that allowed Kosovo to establish institutions of self-government and led to Kosovo's first parliamentary election. FRY elections in September 2000 led to the ouster of MILOSEVIC and installed Vojislav KOSTUNICA as president. A broad coalition of democratic reformist parties known as DOS (the Democratic Opposition of Serbia) was subsequently elected to parliament in December 2000 and took control of the government. The arrest of MILOSEVIC by DOS in 2001 allowed for his subsequent transfer to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague to be tried for crimes against humanity. (MILOSEVIC died at The Hague in March 2006 before the completion of his trial.) In 2001, the country's suspension from the UN was lifted, and it was once more accepted into UN organizations. In 2003, the FRY became Serbia and Montenegro, a loose federation of the two republics with a federal level parliament. Violent rioting in Kosovo in 2004 caused the international community to open negotiations on the future status of Kosovo in January 2006. In May 2006, Montenegro invoked its right under the Constitutional Charter of Serbia and Montenegro to hold a referendum on independence from the state union. The referendum was successful, and Montenegro declared itself an independent nation on 3 June 2006. Two days later, Serbia declared that it was the successor state to the union of Serbia and Montenegro. In October 2006, the Serbian parliament unanimously approved - and a referendum confirmed - a new constitution for the country. To be updated

We cruised down through Hungary until we reached the Serbian border, when we arrived at the border we were told to our amazement that our car was not insured to drive in Serbia, and that we would need to purchase insurance at the border or not be allowed in. While the police held onto our passports we moved our car out of the queue and sat in no-man's land while we made a quick phone call to the car company who confirmed that yes we were insured to drive in Serbia. Despite trying to explain this to the Border Police we [View Full Entry]

The Old Serbian Train The train from Thessaloniki was stinking hot. The seat covers were a nice shade of brown so there was no telling how disgustingly dirty they really were. There was no air con, just open windows and curtains that would flap in the wind. We had seats though. The 3 of us shared one cabin and thought we may even sleep that night. The cabin seats six, so when you fold the seats down can sleep three, kinda. We had about an hour and a half to the "Macedonian" (F.Y.R.O.M.) border. Kell and I were slightly nervous but [View Full Entry]

Groeten uit Belgrado (2) Europe » Serbia » West » Belgrade
Nogmaals groeten uit Belgrado! Even weer een snel berichtje. Daarna [View Full Entry]

So the train I was originally getting from Sophia to Belgrade never actually turned up so I had to wait around another 8 hours to leave. The train then was about 4 hours late getting into Belgrade which, though not a problem for me, caused loads of people to miss their connecting trains. Whenever any of the backpackers asked when we would actually arrive all the ticket inspector would do was to laugh which makes me think that the rail timetables in these parts are simply a formality and should never actually be taken as any indication of the time you'll [View Full Entry]

I want to write about the guy they just grabbed - the guy they describe as a hippy new age healer... its is an interesting connection that this years "new age" rainbow gathering for europe happens to be in serbia. It appears the radovan was living a cool life in belgrade transformed into this new age guru giving out advice on healthy life... and then... well someone shopped him... could one of his patients have been on the way to the european rainbow gathering? Or did the authorities know where he was all the time...? I wonder... then again paying 50 [View Full Entry]

In the words of Ian Oliver, translated on the internet, "Behold, come down percussion hammer". PROLOGUE Serbia, Serbia, Serbia. Ah Serbia. In order to fully appreciate our experience the reader should imagine a constant stream of beautiful, leggy, 6ft1 women. Now, with that in mind, the blog may begin. We arrived in Belgrade after a lengthy 13 hour overnight train journey, in our own 3 person sleeper cabins, which we were slightly ill at ease about, particuarly as we stood on the platform surrounded by a gaggle of very suspicious looking characters. They, we later discovered afte [View Full Entry]

Stop 3 - Belgrade Europe » Serbia
Now, I know that Belgrade is not the most obvious of holiday destinations, but it is certainly a happening place with friendly people and upbeat nightlife and lots and lots of cafes. Apart from the lovely atmosphere of the place, one of the best things about being there is the sense of being well and truly off the beaten track, something I've never felt before not even in the middle of nowhere in Laos or India. I guess that most people think 'Belgrade, that's in Serbia, there was a war there' and quickly write it off as a no go zone. [View Full Entry]

Finally, I'm heading West and aboard the Orient Express - not the expensive American Tourist version, rather the cheap local version, no red velvet curtains, lino rather than carpet and a surprising lack of female travellers. I'm not sure why this is...? Following a VERY full 5 days in London including ingesting amazing amounts of food and drink, catching up with as many people as possible (Helga only got 8 minutes between buses on Monday...sorry!), a fight with the bank who kindly informed me that they'd closed my Visa account rather than canceling my lost card, a 4 hour wait at [View Full Entry]

Hi @ all: So my story about my first trip to Serbia! My Friend is Serbian and he always tells me how great it is in Serbia and how great the Balkan-region is. As I like to discover new places we decided to traval all the Balkan-countries - starting with Serbia! I was very sceptical because you nearly hear just negativ things about those countries - and I wanted to know how the real lifestyle of the people living there is. At 1 of June 2008 we took a plane from Zurich airport to Belgrad Nikola Tesla Airport. The flight was [View Full Entry]
