The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

So...we arrived in Moscow after our overnight train which got in at 4am!! We decided to wait around in the train station till it got light, managed to get a little bit of sleep until some security guys woke us up, turns out they just wanted to move the chairs around, so we just moved to some others, but couldn't get back to sleep. Surprisingly there were actually quite a few people about doing the same thing. We had booked a hostel called the Trans-Siberian Hostel as they had some good rates on a double private room (about time after [View Full Entry]

After a very late night madly packing up the house and quick run across Heathrow Terminal 5 as they called our names for the last call, we started our Round the World in St. Petersburg. It was a pretty cold start and took us a while to work out what was going on with the language but we managed to survive the 3 days here by finding the two restaurants that had an English menu (that weren't McDonalds). Some very impressive buildings intermingled with some beautiful 60s tower blocks. Beer of the week : Baltika 3 - cheapest beer they had [View Full Entry]

After being told "impossible" by two tour agents, five visits to the Russian Embassy, prebookıng my accomadatıon in Moscow, as well as prebooking my Trans-Siberian train ticket, changing my out going flight from Moscow by a mere 24 hours, obtaining two different invitations into Russia, completing the paperwork twice since the online forms were invalid, and paying the 131 dollar processing fee... in US bills printed in 97' or newer only... I was able to procure a 6-day transit visa the day before I had to leave Mongolia for the 101 hour, 6300km journey across the Iron Curtain. A [View Full Entry]

Hello again!!! So we arrived in St Petersburg after our overnight train from Lithuania, train was quite an experience. Basically there is 1st Class not sure what its like, then 2nd class which is 4 beds in a private compartment with a bed on top of the other and then 3rd class which is called Plaskart, which is an open compartment, similar to 2nd class but no privacy, so like one big dorm, except there are 54 beds squeezed into a carriage aboutn 10 metres long! We of course decided to go Plaskart (cheapest!!) and got allocated 2 top bunk beds. [View Full Entry]

it felt like id just escaped moscow as winter was setting in as the two hour wait for the train seemed to take forever in subzero temperatures, i finally boarded at 12midnight looking like an eskimo relieved to be in the warm and finally on my way to china. we were in a little compartment with 4 beds, two huge russian women below and a swedish guy i met at the station across, the scenery was faily boring for the first day as trees were followed by more trees then more and then as if we hadnt seen enough just a [View Full Entry]

Hi Guys, first posting hereby. Made it to STP on Monday, nice place. Add Budapest to Amsterdam and divide by 2, then you get a feeling for the city :o) Went to Hermitage, saw the Aurora ship and enjoyed nightlife so far. My rusty russian knowledge is kinda useful. Tonight we head off to Moskow by nighttrain, more story telling from their! Agnes [View Full Entry]

THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 2009 - RUSSIA Long bus day today as we had to drive from Novgorod into Moscow. That meant it was an early start- with breakfast at 6:45am and on the bus at 7:10am. Most people slept for the first few hours on the bus which is pretty normal - with our first stop being at around 9:30am for coffee and toilets. Back onto the bus for another few hours until midday when we stopped at basically a roadside café/diner. It was raining so they had decided to feed us in there rather than sit outside in the [View Full Entry]

Moscow Woensdag 16 september is het dan eindelijk zo ver... We vliegen richting Moscow.

Hi All We're in Guilin now, but before we reveal all on that particular subject, we will update you with what went on at Lake Baikal on Olkhon Island... We spent three days on the island, in the most beautiful surroundings, in a little wooden guest house. Olga, our host, cooked us great food (normally Omul fish - unique to Lake Baikal), and with no showers, we used the banya (extremely hot sauna) to keep 'clean'. Even the long-drop toilet didn't smell too bad. We did an excursion to the far side of the island on our first full day, which [View Full Entry]
