The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

The capture of Leningrad was one of three strategic goals in Hitlers initial plan, codenamed Operation Barbarossa, for invading and conquering the Soviet Union. Hitlers strategy was motivated by Leningrads political status as the former capital of Russia and the symbolic capital of the Russian Revolution, its military importance as a main base of the Soviet Baltic Fleet and its industrial strength, housing numerous arms factories. The Siege of Leningrad, also known as The Leningrad Blockade was an unsuccessful military operation by the [View Full Entry]

Let’s start by learning how to say hello in Russian! “Does your arse fit ya.” Say it out loud (you know you want to!) Now say it a bit quicker and mumble it slightly in the manner of having downed a few too many potent Russian vodka shots: Diz yr arz fitya = Здравствуйте = hello! FUN FACT! There was once a beautiful old church in the centre of Moscow built on brick and marble. Enter Stalin and his quest to rule with a communist iron fist and he destroys the church to build the ‘largest building [View Full Entry]

So our guide book had told us about a little town called Suzdal, to get there you have to get a bus to Vladimir (3-6 hrs) and then a 1 hr bus to Suzdal. We decided to spend the night in Vladimir as we had sorted out any accommodation or didn't know anything about getting the busses from Vladimir to Suzdal. We had tried to reserve a room on this hotels website, there were not any hostels in Vladimir but this budget hotel called Zayra, which had double private rooms for 20 pounds, but of course, knowing our luck, when we [View Full Entry]

Thats the guy in the background who helped us find our platform even though he does look like a bit of psycho!
So got the bus from Suzdal back to Vladmir to wait for our train that we had booked to Novosibirsk. It was a bit confusing because you have a train number on your tickets and a departure board except the departure board had a different time to our tickets...we waited around till that time and it suddenly changed to the right time we had, so all was good. We headed to our platform to find there was ni access! There were people waiting on all different platforms as this one was closed off having some work done and there were all [View Full Entry]

Our Kupe compartment
So we boarded our train Friday evening which was two nights long, another long one! For this train we were unable to get the cheaper plaskart (3rd) tickets so we had our first experience of Kupe (2nd class), which was a lot better all the price was over double, but still only 60 pounds each which isn't bad for a train that takes around 34 hours! Kupe has the same four bunks beds, but thats it and its in a little closed compartment with no extra beds along the sides, so that means less people are crammed into the carriage which [View Full Entry]

Trains & things I remember my first train journey when I was about 9 or 10. Mum took Sandra and I to Edinburgh for the day. The train was a big event, as was the zoo and the present we got before we came home. I chose a “teenage doll”. She didn’t have a name as we were long before Sindy! Well, the Eurostar is right up there with that childhood memory. I was so impressed with the comfort and efficiency. We left on time. I was immediately surrounded by French voices. I hadn’t realised how much I have missed that [View Full Entry]

Thank goodness for Russia and the amount of Russian themed songs on my ipod! Scooter, Boney M, Dschinghis Khan, The Beatles and the Anastacia soundtrack were all played excessively during our Siberian jaunt! I arrived in Listvyanka more hungover than I have ever been in my whole life. I caught a glimpse of myself in a window reflection, and scared that I would terrify small children and puppies as much as I terrified myself, I wrapped my scarf around my head burqa style so noone could see what I looked like. We stayed at Nikolays place in Listvyanka, and I didn’t [View Full Entry]

Took the over night train or Red Arrow from St. Petersberg to Moscow. Managed to end up in perhaps the most miserable hotel in the world in the middle of nowhere. Locals aren't the most accomodating of people, so a good way to throw ourselves into backpacking and trying to work the network of stunning Metro stations to get into the centre and Red Square to join the throngs of tourists clicking away at the Basilica and the Kremlin. Supermarkets are a new experience, all the goods are on display behind glass cabinets, you then have to queue at the separate [View Full Entry]

As promised, this time we write a decent blog entry... SPB Saintpetersburg (SPB) was great, we spent there 3 days. Lucky us the youth hostel was in the centre, so all sights were in walking distance. SPB is the favourite city for many Russians as it's a buzzing place with lots of nice buildings and people are very friendly. The only negative they say about SPB is the weather, it can be very very cold and dark, a bit depressive sometimes. We were lucky though, the sun was shining, blue sky and not much wind. We visited the Hermitage, which is [View Full Entry]
