The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

In what has been our longest inner city train ride so far, we took a trip today out to the famous Gorky Park. Not quite sure what we were expecting, but what we got was a colossal entry into a mostly deserted amusement park. Complete with that spaceship we saw on the boat. We are not quite sure if it actually gets busy. Across the road, we entered the Sculpture Park, formerly called 'The Park of Fallen Idols', which was much more romantic. A semi-overgrown park full of Soviet Era statues; bronzed propaganda soldiers and a bunch of Lenin and Stalin [View Full Entry]

Day 10: Moscow

 Europe » Russia » Northwest » Moscow
Today is the day we are off to see the... KREMLIN! But first - a qucik breakfast of cheap and nasty pizza and our new favorite ADRENALIN drink (the Russian's haven't really caught on with cheap and easy cafes yet) Unfortunately we're not allowed to hang out with the politburo in the dumas or any of the other official looking buildings (and we weren't even allowed to walk on any of the internal roads!) - but we were able to view all of the many Golden Domed churches and cathedrals - all with such magical makes like Cathedral of Ascension, Assumption [View Full Entry]

Day 9: Back in Moscow

 Europe » Russia » Northwest » Moscow
7.23am and we are about 32 minutes exactly (because the trains actually run on time in this country!) - before we arrive back in Moscow. Our train this time is a step up from our previous affair - Shiny and Red I believe they call it the Red Arrow. With Red and Gold trim and fancy curtains, it felt like Royalty could ride in this train. Shared with two young Russian guys who wanted to talk more than sleep - but as we had the 2 bottom bunks, Tim and I weren't quite sure the proper train etiquette... so spent an [View Full Entry]

Part II of Russia

 Europe » Russia » Siberia » Irkutsk
After finally arriving in Irkutsk in Siberia, our group spent a day or so looking round the city and going on a walking tour and visiting a small museum. They have the worst drivers ever there! I actually saw a small car crash and quite a few other near misses. Although to be fair, the driving in UB, Mongolia was pretty awful too. The next part of the trip was to Lake Baikal (the largest freshwater lake (by volume I think) in the world). We were there for a couple of nights and one full day. The small little village and [View Full Entry]

After yesterdays relaxing afternoon, myself and Nance decided to go out and try and catch some footy in a pub. Nance earlier spotted a different english bar we could go to. Adelle stayed behind as i think she was a bit under the weather. She's been sneezing a lot recently. We got to the bar in time for the start of the Liverpool v Stoke game but it was 5 quid a pint!! Ridiculous. So before long we abandoned the footy which i think Nance was happy about and went to a couple of other bars. Before long we were onto [View Full Entry]

St Petersburg
St Petersburg Cathedral
St Petersburg

Waiting for Tim to wake up, I attempted to read a map all by myself and found the Kuznechny Market. An indoor fresh food market full of meat, meat, pickled vegetables and fresh honey. Tourist event for the day was the Russian Museum, where we made our way through several hundred years of Russian art - starting with the massive religious canvases (lots of halos and Jesus's on crosses). Finally did my "Must Do" and saw a couple of Kadinsky paintings (the only Russian artist I know anything about). Next stop was the Peter & Paul Fortress - which definitely needs [View Full Entry]

So here we go again! For those who don’t know (and assuming you really care), we have just taken off for a 4 week visit to Russia and Eastern Europe, and internet facilities permitting (which at the moment look decidedly uncertain), we plan to record details of our travels. The first stage of the trip, and the only part that is organised in advance, is a cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg. This comprises around 3 days in Moscow, 5 days cruising the Volga, Svir and Neva Rivers, then 3 days in St P. As well as Joan and myself, [View Full Entry]

St Petersburg at last

Europe » Russia » Northwest » Saint Petersburg
We managed to get to St Petersburg okay after a small hiccup. Since the last blog i went and bought some new jeans as i somehow lost some trousers in Poland (as you do). Have since tried them on and they don't fit so back down to just 3 pairs again. Anyway, we spent the day mulling around the station and shopping centre and decided at 6pm to check on our train which was set to leave at 8.10pm. Only then do we realise that we need to be at a different station. On the other side of Moscow. Nobody explained [View Full Entry]

More views of the train stations
Today was the day we visited the Hermitage - the largest art museum in the world. Full of gold, art, gold, statues and more gold. Dinner on Vasilevsky Island at a restaurant called 'Rssy Kitsch' - where the decor is a mixture of 1001 Arabian Nights and weird pictures of Russian politicians. Ate borsch, fish stews and... more vodka! [View Full Entry]
