The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

Trains & things I remember my first train journey when I was about 9 or 10. Mum took Sandra and I to Edinburgh for the day. The train was a big event, as was the zoo and the present we got before we came home. I chose a “teenage doll”. She didn’t have a name as we were long before Sindy! Well, the Eurostar is right up there with that childhood memory. I was so impressed with the comfort and efficiency. We left on time. I was immediately surrounded by French voices. I hadn’t realised how much I have missed that [View Full Entry]

Thank goodness for Russia and the amount of Russian themed songs on my ipod! Scooter, Boney M, Dschinghis Khan, The Beatles and the Anastacia soundtrack were all played excessively during our Siberian jaunt! I arrived in Listvyanka more hungover than I have ever been in my whole life. I caught a glimpse of myself in a window reflection, and scared that I would terrify small children and puppies as much as I terrified myself, I wrapped my scarf around my head burqa style so noone could see what I looked like. We stayed at Nikolays place in Listvyanka, and I didn’t [View Full Entry]

Took the over night train or Red Arrow from St. Petersberg to Moscow. Managed to end up in perhaps the most miserable hotel in the world in the middle of nowhere. Locals aren't the most accomodating of people, so a good way to throw ourselves into backpacking and trying to work the network of stunning Metro stations to get into the centre and Red Square to join the throngs of tourists clicking away at the Basilica and the Kremlin. Supermarkets are a new experience, all the goods are on display behind glass cabinets, you then have to queue at the separate [View Full Entry]

As promised, this time we write a decent blog entry... SPB Saintpetersburg (SPB) was great, we spent there 3 days. Lucky us the youth hostel was in the centre, so all sights were in walking distance. SPB is the favourite city for many Russians as it's a buzzing place with lots of nice buildings and people are very friendly. The only negative they say about SPB is the weather, it can be very very cold and dark, a bit depressive sometimes. We were lucky though, the sun was shining, blue sky and not much wind. We visited the Hermitage, which is [View Full Entry]

So...we arrived in Moscow after our overnight train which got in at 4am!! We decided to wait around in the train station till it got light, managed to get a little bit of sleep until some security guys woke us up, turns out they just wanted to move the chairs around, so we just moved to some others, but couldn't get back to sleep. Surprisingly there were actually quite a few people about doing the same thing. We had booked a hostel called the Trans-Siberian Hostel as they had some good rates on a double private room (about time after [View Full Entry]

After a very late night madly packing up the house and quick run across Heathrow Terminal 5 as they called our names for the last call, we started our Round the World in St. Petersburg. It was a pretty cold start and took us a while to work out what was going on with the language but we managed to survive the 3 days here by finding the two restaurants that had an English menu (that weren't McDonalds). Some very impressive buildings intermingled with some beautiful 60s tower blocks. Beer of the week : Baltika 3 - cheapest beer they had [View Full Entry]

After being told "impossible" by two tour agents, five visits to the Russian Embassy, prebookıng my accomadatıon in Moscow, as well as prebooking my Trans-Siberian train ticket, changing my out going flight from Moscow by a mere 24 hours, obtaining two different invitations into Russia, completing the paperwork twice since the online forms were invalid, and paying the 131 dollar processing fee... in US bills printed in 97' or newer only... I was able to procure a 6-day transit visa the day before I had to leave Mongolia for the 101 hour, 6300km journey across the Iron Curtain. A [View Full Entry]

Hello again!!! So we arrived in St Petersburg after our overnight train from Lithuania, train was quite an experience. Basically there is 1st Class not sure what its like, then 2nd class which is 4 beds in a private compartment with a bed on top of the other and then 3rd class which is called Plaskart, which is an open compartment, similar to 2nd class but no privacy, so like one big dorm, except there are 54 beds squeezed into a carriage aboutn 10 metres long! We of course decided to go Plaskart (cheapest!!) and got allocated 2 top bunk beds. [View Full Entry]

it felt like id just escaped moscow as winter was setting in as the two hour wait for the train seemed to take forever in subzero temperatures, i finally boarded at 12midnight looking like an eskimo relieved to be in the warm and finally on my way to china. we were in a little compartment with 4 beds, two huge russian women below and a swedish guy i met at the station across, the scenery was faily boring for the first day as trees were followed by more trees then more and then as if we hadnt seen enough just a [View Full Entry]
