Definitions: gol -mongolian for river, nuur -Mongolian for lake, aimag -a mongolian state or province, asalam aleykhem -Kazakh for peace be with you. The Bohmoron Gol drains several lakes high in the boundary ranges which seperate Russia from Mongolia. It then flows through a large, wide (50 km +), rocky valley rimmed with 4000 m + peaks before dumping heavily turbid water into broad, shallow Achit Nuur. Along this course, the river devides Uvs aimag to the northeast from Bayan-Olgii aimag, the western most political division in the country. In dividing the two aimags, the mighty Bohmoron also divides two distinctly different cultures. On the Uvs side, the virtually plantless, rocky plains are occupied by a mostly Kalkh Mongol population, who ethnically make up roughly 90 percent of all Mongolian citizens. (Location: Barnaul, Russia) My travels got off to a slow start. Lufthansa canceled my flight and I was told I probably wasn’t leaving until the next day. It reminded me of a spin off of a Jeff Foxworthy joke: If you’re flight is canceled because workers are on strike, you might be a Euro, or at least dealing with them. Leaving the next day was especially ironic given that my mother in-law (still weird to say) mistakenly booked me for the next day and we paid lots of money to reschedule my flight. Needless to say I hung around long enough, asked enough questions, and talked to enough people and was eventually able to find a flight to Moscow the same day. A few observations: -Weather: The weather so far has been perfect, sunny, no rain ... read more

(pictures will be posted later) I thoroughly enjoyed our Russian ceremony and reception, although admittedly, preparing for it may not have always been bliss. The idea of a wedding is pretty much the same in any countries so I won't go on and on about first we did this, then we did that, next we did that...but instead I'll elaborate on a few of the peculiarities. The Bride: First off, I must say my bride-to-be was really stunning. There's something so beautiful about a woman all beautified (to use her words), in a white dress, and flush with attention, but when it's your bride to be, I can now say from first hand experience it does set you back a step or two. Wedding Palaces: In Russia you can be wed in a church or a ... read more

Hahaha. Right. Not that I want to mock the sentiment. Generally, I think believing in something, striving towards a goal, and being open-hearted are good things. But when these ideas come in the form of company mantras, I find them significantly more difficult to swallow. February 16th and 17th, there was an Amway conference in Barnaul. My boss and her daughter both sell Amway products and are very involved with the company, and so they organized a bus trip to Barnaul to attend the conference, and I was able to tag along to explore Barnaul a bit. I will add here that generally Amway business tends to disrupt our classes because people come in and talk and look at catalogs or samples while we are having a lesson. As such, I am not a big fan ... read more
