In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

Very Busy Bucharest...I am at the half way point of my trip in terms of the length of my stay here in Europe. I am amazed I am only half way along. I feel like Boulder was from a different life, a different planet. I arrived in Bucharest yesterday evening and was very relieved to have Alexandru meet me at the airport. It was all a bit overwhelming. We picked up his girlfriend Ioana and they drove me around the city a little so I could get my bearings. Unfortunately today I don't have any of those bearings left. I had [View Full Entry]

Ema and Dan kicking back after the Ursus Beer Festival. Yes he is male and called Ema ... go figure!
Heading into Cluj Napoca I already had an inkling that it was going to be a town to remember. A university town, this place has one of the largest student populations in Eastern Europe. I think we all know what that means ... this town really knows how to throw a party. After running into the Aussie boys again at the hostel ... I learnt that there was a beer festival on in town. I love a good beer festival, as does any traveller ... an event that promises cheap beer and lots of it. Heading to the beer festival we [View Full Entry]

Cheap beer, three day growth

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila - more!

Oh ye believers of the legend............. Without a crucifix, garlic, silver bullet or a stake, I have ventured into Dracula's Castle and returned without a touch of being undead! Truth be told, Vlad Tepes is a genuine hero in these parts. He was a true nationalist who wanted to make his territories free from the Turkish invaders.. Ok, yeah, he did impale people (and now I do know how to it), but more as a warning to his enemies. There is history that Vlad's grandfather went to the Castle, but no record that Vlad himself ever went there. For that metter, [View Full Entry]

Entrance to the main square in the old town
I was told that if I wanted to see traditional old town Romanian, then I would definitely need to stop in Sighisoara on my way to Club Napoca. I bought a ticket that allowed me a few hours in Sighisoara and would then allow me to continue on to Club Napoca by nightfall. Getting off the train in Sighisoara, I turned around to see Dan and Kym -- two of the Aussie guys from Brasov -- hopping on the train to Cluj. Oh well at least I would have someone to drink beer with when I arrived in Cluj! After storing [View Full Entry]

Hey there trip voyeurs.......... Yesterday we had an excellent tour of Bucharest, followed by a good dinner al fresco. Thank gooodness the temperature had cooled because it had been in the mid-90s since I arrived!!!!! This morning we were on the bus by 9 AM for our ride to Transylvania. It took almost 4 hours to get here, but it was interesting and informative because we learned a lot about life under Communism and the Gypsies. One finds it amazing that the people's lives here have completely changed in 15 years since the revolution. None of the consumer goods we saw [View Full Entry]

Greetings everyone......... Day 3 of "searching for Dracula". Getting here was quite a journey. Thanks to tardy Tri-Rail, I arrived at the Delta check in counter at MIA 2 minutes after theflight was "closed". Mind you, there was still 20 minutes til the flight left, but it was "closed". Luckily, there was another flight to ATL within 1 and a halfhours, so they put me on that one and I still was able to make my connection to Paris. Would you believe that the Paris flight ran 1 hour late, thus putting my connection to Bucharest in jeapardy. If you have [View Full Entry]
