In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

(written two days ago) As I write this, we are on a train to Krakow, Poland. We are leaving Romania after six chilled-out days here. We have had some welcome time to relax and enjoy the autumn colours after travelling so frequently, and far, across the former Soviet lands. I’ve caught up with old friends, Indie has made some new ones, and together we’ve revelled in the cool atmosphere of Bucharest, one of my favourite cities. But that’s the short version. Here’s what really happened… The path back to Europe - 45 hours with the F [View Full Entry]

Still driving around Romania with Lisa and finding it hard to leave and continue with the rest of my trip. Having a fantastic time although this is one backward, expensive country. Sat in an internet cafe that is someone's flat with a few computers and soldering irons laying around. We are in the biggest town that we've come across for a few days >> this is real farming country and it's now harvest time. The vast fields full of families collecting the crops and driving back by horse and cart. Stayed in a small village last night in a room in [View Full Entry]

Haystacks on!

 Europe » Romania » Transylvania
Many people we met couldn't understand why we'd want to go to Romania at all. We'd heard all the horror stories such as 'gypsy women' throwing their babies at you so that their older children could fleece you as you reach for the flying child. We'd also been warned of all the usual dangers such as pick pocketing and scams and were mentally prepared for a very difficult time. We touched down in Bucharest early on the 16th of September and jostled through the desperate taxi drivers looking for our guesthouse pickup. Our Colo High classmates will understand our fear that [View Full Entry]

for anyone following my continuing adventures, I have now returned to Brasov after 3 days in the Carpathians. I've been riding with a German girl called Lisa who is a photographer. Saw the castle where Vlad drunk blood and the inspiration for the Dracula cartoon series. Stayed in a cable car hut by a mountain lake 2034metres above sea level last night. This holiday gets better and better >> might even be approaching happy. [View Full Entry]

My getaway

 Europe » Romania » Transylvania » Brasov
Saturday 6:30 am, Nothing can stop me..clouds, rain...distance..I need a breath of fresh air..I love Bucharest, the people, the streets - mix of old and new, the chaos..I cant live without his noisy personality but from time to time I have to run away as far as I can... So got my friends togheter, lots of patience, laughters and drive towards Transylvanian mountains. First stop was to Posada's cinegetic museum where i had a sweet encounter with a friendly bear (lately they r turists atraction when they come down from woods to Brasov or Sinaia for a meal from garbage). Brasov & Sighisoara

 Europe » Romania » Transylvania
The second leg of this trip was Transylvania. We planned to fly into Bucharest and take a train to the central city of Transylvania, Brasov. Our flight to Romania was quick and easy but crowded and tight. We bought tickets from Istanbul to Bucharest Romania on Blue Air, one of the small budget airlines that are everywhere in Europe. The plane was clean and on time; of course our knees were jammed into the seat in front of us but you get what you pay for. Cost: about $100 round trip each. There are 2 airports in Bucharest, the main is [View Full Entry]

Our last day trip took us to Transylvania, Brasov, and the mountain castles of Romania. The whole country is about half the size of France and is crossed by the Carpathian Mountains, which is famous for its fresh air and springs. We passed several spa resorts, where our guide explained many Romanians and tourist go to for treatment in the fresh air. Quietly to ourselves, the Americans predicted, if they did not all smoke so much, they may enjoy fresh air at home! Traffic leaving Bucharest at 7 a.m. was like any rush hour morning in Atlanta- in fact one our [View Full Entry]

In the 1960s, under the leadership of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and his successor, Nicolae Ceausescu, the Communist Party of Romania began to implement a foreign policy independent of Soviet goals. Socialist state ownership and central planning fostered the rapid growth of heavy industry and forcibly turned Romania from an agrarian into an urban sociey. During the 1970s, Ceausescu attempted to modernise the Romanian economy further, by investing huge amounts of money borrowed from Western credit institutions. Due to his grandiose development projects, the Romanian people were submitted to a rigor [View Full Entry]

Flower Delivery
There were several carts delivering flowers for a quick installation before the dignataries arrived.
Wednesday, a few of us took a walk and stumbled on a park very close by. There was a huge lake and lots of bridges and sculptures and walkways. As I mentioned earlier, there is a huge convention of French speaking nations coming to town next week. Workers have been digging up the roads, installing marble or quartz stone curbsides. I thought I procrastinated, but they take the cake. The park was buzzing with workers cleaning up the parks, trimming trees and planting flowers. There has been a litter problem here, and maybe the big clean-up will give people the inspiration [View Full Entry]
