In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

The villagers at work in Rohia.
We started our drive for a region called the Maramures. Reading about this area was really what enticed us to visit Romania. Due to its geography, the huge mountain range, it has been seperated from the rest of Romania. So it really did feel like going back 100 years in time and some of the villages felt untouched by modern times. Our first stop was a Cluj Napoca, a large university town, with lots of cafe bars. We only stopped briefly as we were excited to head to the more medieval Romania. Travel distance by this time we had realised took [View Full Entry]

The Hollywood of Romania, Transylvania. Thats what this area should be called just because of the white nametag signs on both Brasov an Rasnov mountains, quite funny to look at :) I arrived on Tuesday at midday after 16hrs on the night train, an experience in itself. 6 beds, 3 on each side in a small cabin, shared with two romanians that couldnt speak english. One was so large that she could nearly not fit in the bed space and was a rival for the snoorer in Newquey, not much sleep when she was! The other seemed quite nice, she [View Full Entry]

We spent the last couple of days trvelling from Bukk national park to the Romanian border. Once out of the hills in the north, Hungary is as flat as a pancake. The bridge over the motorway is the biggest hill we have gone over in 6 hours driving. We have come from one of the best campsites in Hungary in Bukk to the worst campsite in Hungary in Miskolc. The guy running it had the cheak to try and charge us 20 euro (twice the price of the best campsite). After investigating the rusty, filthy cold showers we haggled him down [View Full Entry]

Hello ppl Here i am again, with a few hours to spend for me. During the last 3 weeks my life was split in between AIESEC Pitesti, AIESEC Romania and AIESEC Lithuania. Financial management, Conference management, training development, agenda development, match and search tools,.......and so on. But here i am ready to post some pictures from the last conferences that i have attended in Romania. One of them is LTS (Local Training Seminar) made by my Home LC (Pitesti) for new members and the 2nd one is ICPS (International Cultural Preparation seminar). The conferences were great, loads of [View Full Entry]

Bought ourselves tickets to the mini-bus and 2 hours later there we were!

We had a wonderful couple of weeks in Romania as you can probably tell by our inability to choose between the photos we have taken (sorry I know there are a lot for this one!) First stop Bucharest what a random city it is! It is Chisinau's grown up prettier sister! By that there are amazing Parisian avenues, albeit a little rough around the edges, but there are also blocks and blocks of communist concrete disasters. It was once called the Paris of the east, a claim made by most of the Eastern European cities we have visited, but after [View Full Entry]

Dear All, It has been a while since our last update but in retrospect the pictures, until recently have been rather dull. But now that the dark and stormy months seem to be passing into a spring time we are coming out of hibernation and have some pictures and stories to share. For the most part, life in Odorhei/Undvarhely is increasingly busy. Alecia is deep into the fruit project with Agora and we have had several meetings with various folks in the villages regarding re-vitalizing traditional fruit drying practices and creating some traditional product focused cooperatives.
