SIGHISOARA - TRANSILVANYA Aca nacio realmente Vlad Tepes AKA - "DRACULA".

Well...Sorry to leave you all hanging... We made it out of Athens! We went to the Embassy and right when we were there, our credit cards arrived - amazing! So, we hopped on the metro, transferred to the ferry, and traveled out to beautiful Ermoupolis on Syros Island. We spent the next few days exploring the island's beaches and feasting on delicious Greek seafood. Traveling back to Athens, we caught a train to Thessaloniki, Greece (where we would transfer to a night train to Istanbul). If Tirana to Athens was a nightmare bus ride, this was a train trip from Hades. (Get it...we're in Greece! mwhaha!) The train was so packed out, it was standing room only. No joke. We stood up (or sat on the floor) for the entire 7 hours to Thessaloniki. Awful! But, ... read more

Ruins of Dacian Cities can be found at Capalna and Craiva, but the most atractive and well preserved are the old cities of Alba Iulia, Sebes and Aiud. The castles and places are important touristic sights due to their external and internal architecture, being built in epoch style. Remarkable, in this respect, are The Princely Palace and The Episcopal Palace of Alba Iulia, the building of The National Museum of Unification which is also in Alba Iulia, or Bethlen Gabor College in Aiud. In some places varied medieval mansions are also well preserved, being declared monuments of architecture, examples are: Sard, Ighiu, Telna, Galda de Jos, Vintu de Jos, Vurpar, Ocna Mures, Sanmiclaus, Cetatea de Balta, Sancrai.... read more

“I read that every known superstition in the world is gathered into the horseshoe of the Carpathians, as if it were the center of some of imaginative whirlpool; if so my stay may be very interesting.” From the diary of Jonathan Harker October 27, 2006 (Friday) Today I leave the mundane world of Maryland to begin my journey to Transylvania. Heather decided to keep a travel journal in the style of Jonathan Harker and as I drive to JFK, I can only hope my journey is half as interesting. I arrive at JFK airport in New York and easily spot my adventure loving companions. I recognize our tour host, Charles, immediately from the pictures on the website. Judging by the attire of my companions I have come to the right place. Charles hands out our goodie ... read more

Happy Holidays! Well, we once again find ourselves tardy on the blog front. So, we would simply like to make a short note of what we have been up to and present you with our favorite pictures from the late summer, fall and the holidays. The glossy overview: This summer we were blessed to have friends and both sets of parents, Alecia and Chris brothers and Erin (Scott, Chris brother’s fiancé) here. We had a fabulous time with everone traveling around Maramuresh (famous for its wooden churches), Bucovina (famous for painted monasteries), and Szekelfold our little corner of Transilvania. Highlights included introducing everyone to local cuisine, taking some good hikes in the summer meadows and trying our greenhorn hands at goat milking. Chris and Alecia spent time with friends too, including Mark (the other boy flautist ... read more

I wish I had more time in Romania :o( For me, this was a quick trip - to catch up with a friend before I head back to Sydney and I will return! 3 nights in this wonderful country is soo not enough. I was asked 'what do you want to see, while in Romania?' and my response was 'the autumn colours please'. Wow, this is the first time I have seen a country in autumn (Sydney just doesn't cut it when it comes to the changing colours of trees). We headed straight up to Brasov, the villa was up the mountain amongst the trees and the owners were fantastic - helping me with english tourist books and taxis etc. My first day was lovely. I started with a huge breakfast, did a little research then ... read more

Read this article on Roadjunky at http://www.roadjunky.com/article/1771/halloween-in-transylvania-bring-your-own-blood The Romanians just don’t know how to build a Dracula theme park. Communism took all the initiative out of them. I hurried along the dusty, cobbled streets of Sighisoara, trying to find my way back to the empty hotel near the train tracks. Around every corner, I had to dodge open graves and the leers from men standing inside them with shovels. The story ran through my mind about a 15th century prince who was captured by Vlad Tepes not far from here and forced to read his own funeral oration as he knelt before an open grave. It was dusk, last Halloween day. I had expected to arrive in town alongside thousands of tourists on a pilgrimage because apart from a little town in Mexico, where pumpkins are ... read more
