I've made it as far east as I'll be going on this trip, and now I'm 7 hours ahead of all my friends on the East Coast. I've wanted to go to Romania for a long time, and to be honest, this part of the trip came down to a choice between Romania and the Baltic States. I initially chose the Baltic states because flights from Prague were cheaper there. Then when I decided to stay grounded, Romania became the ultimate winner for my tourist bucks. Since leaving Prague yesterday morning, I've spent 22 hours on trains. The train to Budapest was 7 hours, of which 4 were spent with the same 5 people in the 6-person cabin until we got to Bratislava, where they all got off. The remainder of the trip to Budapest was ... read more

It’s now more than a week since we left Bucharest to travel to Brasov, a moderately large city in Transylvania. The city has a population of around 250,000. We left Bucharest on Easter Monday, which is a public holiday in Romania, and so the traffic through Bucharest was not too bad – or at least significantly better than a normal weekday. The week after Easter was also school holidays and so many people had left Bucharest to travel to the countryside and this was pretty evident from the relatively empty carpark surrounding our apartment. However, a lot of these people had to start work on Tuesday and so the traffic returning to Bucharest was bumper-to-bumper coming towards us – I was pleased that we weren’t part of it. Our trip northwards initially passed fairly flat farmland ... read more

8:30 in the morning, my mobile is ringing. It's my one of my colleagues who came with me from the Netherlands. Where are you? Did you had breakfast yet? We have to leave! Immediately I was awake. I made it just a bit late the last evening and I was not up to date about the agreed time to meet with the rest. Quickly I prepared myself and grab a sandwich from the hotel restaurant and went to the meeting point. All our colleagues were already there waiting for us. With three fully loaded cars we left and drove to the northern direction, towards the mountains. As one of the smallest persons I had to sit on the back and be squeezed with two other colleagues for the next hours, so unfortunately no sleeping during the ... read more

Up now: Halloween, visiting the home country of Dracula and seeing the Transylvanian castles that Vlad III the Impaler resided, in turn, inspiring Bram Stoker's legendary tale. It was a brisk Halloween night when I left Budapest by train for my journey in to the Transylvanian Alps. This party was THE place to be. Vlad, the Impaler himself, invited us all to a killer party at his home, known throughout the lands as Dracula’s Castle. I arrived at the Brasov hostel within hours of departing for the castle. Almost everyone staying at the hostel that night was attending the party, so travelling companions helped pass the 35 minute drive to and from the castle. There were people from all over the world. My hostel covered Brazil, Australia, India, England, Boston, MA, Ireland, and myself; and we ... read more

On arriving in Brasov we went to town to have a look. We soon came to the town square with beautiful buildings. No traffic here. We discovered an old hotel restaurant that started in 1914 with old photos about early years. Very nice. The price for dinner is as two hamburgers at home. The reason coming here was Bran castle or Dracula castle. We went in the late morning to Bran, thinking that the buses would be to lunch. Ha. It took forty-five minutes to get a ticket. Bran castle was up and running by 1382. Huge additions were build by 1531. The association between Vlad Tepes Dracula, Prince of Walachia 1448-1476 who spent this early years in Transylvania gave Bran Stoker, the idea of Count Dracula the Vampire. Tepes which means the Impaler, was a ... read more

le We left Sighisoare in the rain. We only had to go 118 Kilometres, so we had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. The villages are built all along the road. In such a way, there is no opening in between, just an enormous gate to let the horses and carts loaded with hay to get in. Cows, sheep, chooks and geese are running everywhere. Each village has some sort of fortification high on the hill. Bears and Wolves roam the forests but not that close that we could see them. The Saxons and Hungarians settled here during the middle ages. The threat of an invasion from the east resulted in building the fortifications of churches and citadels. The first one of these was in Sachiz. Build between 1493-1525. Like all Transylvanian fortified churches they ... read more

After a lovely country trip we arrived in Sighisoara, what we now call Sighi. It is a 15th century UNESCO medieval town, that is the old town. Vlad Dracula or Vlad the Impaler was born here in 1431. He is seen here as a hero. Because of his battles with the Ottomans. The church on the hill has 500 years old Frescos. There is the 14th century clock tower, some of the houses are from the Saksen era, 15th -16th century. The Phoenician house is from 13th century. Unbelievable because it is all intact and lived in. So here we went steps and cobble stone road up and up the hill to visit this famous church with the Frescos. When we got there no video or photo allowed. We begged telling we come from far away ... read more

We left on Friday afternoon from Bucharest to Predeal via Intorsura Buzaului. The views near Siriu lake are spectacular and the road is beautiful there. On Saturday I drove from Predeal to Sibiu via Rasnov and Zarnesti and stopped on the way to see the Fagaras citadel. Then we went back on Valea Oltului to Buleta. The road here was a lot worse than I remember, quite crowded and with lots and lots of villages which slowed us down... On Sunday we went back to Bucharest, making a quick detour through Bunesti. Went to Brasov again for work (at a conference). Stopped at a nice restaurant in Predeal on the way there, then got to Brasov just in time for the first lectures. After the Friday talks were over, I went with Ileana around the city and found a film festival taking place in the main square. So... We saw Kon-Tiki. It was very nice. On Saturday we attended half the talks, then left for Moroeni (where my sister was on a trip with her classmates). We spent a lovely afternoon there, with a nice bonfire, 2 guitars and lots of songs... Then we got back to Brasov. On Sunday we gave our talks and then left home in the afternoon.
