Dag 3 -Rondreis Roemenië -donderdag 30/8/2018 – Sapanta (RO) – Busexcursie. Morgen bollen we het hier af.... read more

Veel primitieve verkoopstandjes ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling east from Debrecen in Hungary to Maramures in Romania. We arrived at the Hungarian / Romanian border mid-afternoon, where an austere young policeman came onto the minibus and took our passports. We then waited for an hour, not allowed to get out, until the passports were returned. At one stage we saw the young policeman come outside and have a cigarette, laughing and joking with his fellow police officers only a few metres from where we were trapped inside the minibus. Luckily, our bus driver left the air conditioning on, so we didn’t overheat. Our passports were finally handed over, and we continued our journey east towards Vadu Izei, a village in Maramures. While the landscape didn’t change much in terms of rolling flat agricultural fields stretching to the horizon, ... read more

Unusual places - we love them We have a soft spot for unique and unusual places, especially if they are photogenic. We found one such place in the village Sapanta in the Maramures region, namely the village cemetery Cimitirul Vesel. This cemetery is also known as Merry Cemetery because the grave markers are painted in bright colours. The grave markers all have more or less funny epitaphs written on them accompanied by a picture of the deceased where he/she is in a for him/her typical environment. The grave markers are all made out of wood and the epitaphs and the pictures are carved in the wood. The idea to make these wooden grave markers came from a self taught wood carver named Stan Ioan Patras. He created the first grave marker in the 1930-ies and now ... read more

Churches and monasteries This year we decided to make Romania the destination of choice for our summer vacation. When we told family and friends that we were going to the country of Vlad Dracul we mostly got the reply "But why?" accompanied with a somewhat puzzled look like we had gone insane or something. When we then answered "Well, why not?" nobody could give a reason why not. Now that we have spent three weeks visiting interesting places in many corners of Romania all we can say is "Why don't everybody go to Romania?" because we had an absolutely great time there. Well, not everybody thought Romania was a strange country to visit. Ake's colleague said "Wow, you are going to Romania! How cool!". But Ake's colleague was born in Romania so perhaps she is biased... ... read more

So Sighetu Maramatiei to Brasov was our first proper journey by train. First, it was thanks to Florin that we got sleeper tickets at all - he got some cancellations for us. Sleeper tickets mean you are in the Sleeper carriage and that was it. Well first you had to get in which for Jane was quite a challenge with three big steps from ground level and a pack on her back. We got in and discovered our allotted cabin with three beds - the top one being taken by a local and his young son. There were only the beds to sit on so there was a general congregation in the corridor. We quickly met Bram (yes as in Stoker) from Belgium and his Romanian wife, Maria, who had been back for their annual trip ... read more

Brasov August 3 2014 The Maramures is a official region/county in Northern Translyvania in Romania. In fact the original Marmures region is just the North East side of this region, bordered by the river Tisa and Ukraine to the North and consisting of three valleys enclosed by mountains which has ensured its relative isolation over the years. The major town is Sighetu Maramatiei on the Ukrainian border. It is not easy to get to and that is what makes the area so unique. It hard to believe you are still in Europe in some respects. We are in fact only 100 miles/160km from the Bieszczcady mountains in Poland where we were staying a few weeks ago. The area is known within Romania as the area upholding old traditions. In many respects it is like going back ... read more

Vaduz Izei, July 31 We just had a great bus trip from Budapest to Sigetu Marmatiei in Northern Romania in the heart of the Marmures region. We booked on the internet using the the free access at the end of the tills in the local Tesco's in Eger. We took the express bus back from Eger to Budapest and had been told to meet the 'car' at the AGIP petrol station outside Keleti railway station. We had booked with Christian Tours (who later turned out to be an agent) and the courier was Edmeea Trans (book direct with them to save 10€/person). The 'car' turned out to be a very nice 19 seater minibus. The driver was expecting 16 clients and we hung around waiting for a passenger on a delayed international train from Germany. It ... read more

We have spend four days in this lovely area. Today is the last day. At our pension at Oncesti some funny things happen at breakfast. We have a plate made ready with some type of pancake egg, tomatoes, capsicum and very fresh sort of bocconchini. soft cheese. But the Hostess changed things over a few days. The last morning we even had yoghurt. The Hospitality was out of this world. The Host is a Biology professor but is on holidays. He offered to be our guide and took us to some villages, where church services were conducted around some old wooden churches. The ceremonies were held outside in the garden amongst the cemeteries. Women separate from the men and in traditional clothing. He took inside the churches some dating back to the 16th century. Inside one ... read more

Romania. Well after all the concern and warnings, do we have some news for you. A sad story goes with the good. The Romanians are angry with the world. They say that because"Gypsies" roamed the world in very often in an unsavoury way, it is blamed on the Romanians. But they say, Romanians are not Gypsies, they are a race on their own. Well let us tell you. We find in this beautiful country amazing, friendly, helpful people. Today a wonderful happening. After visiting a museum village where wooden homes and barns etc. dating back from 1600+. We had a bright idea, the Ukrainian border edges the town we were in. We wanted to see it. Surprise . Of we went and there we stood at the edge of the bridge, which crosses the river Tisa. ... read more
