Background: The principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia - for centuries under the suzerainty of the Turkish Ottoman Empire - secured their autonomy in 1856; they united in 1859 and a few years later adopted the new name of Romania. The country gained recognition of its independence in 1878. It joined the Allied Powers in World War I and acquired new territories following the conflict. In 1940, it allied with the Axis powers and participated in the 1941 German invasion of the USSR. Three years later, overrun by the Soviets, Romania signed an armistice. The post-war Soviet occupation led to the formation of a Communist "people's republic" in 1947 and the abdication of the king. The decades-long rule of dictator Nicolae CEAUSESCU, who took power in 1965, and his Securitate police state became increasingly oppressive and draconian through the 1980s. CEAUSESCU was overthrown and executed in late 1989. Former Communists dominated the government until 1996, when they were swept from power by a fractious coalition of centrist parties. In 2000, the center-left Social Democratic Party (PSD) became Romania's leading party, governing with the support of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). The opposition center-right alliance formed by the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Democratic Party (PD) scored a surprise victory over the ruling PSD in December 2004 presidential elections. The PNL-PD alliance maintains a parliamentary majority with the support of the UDMR, the Humanist Party (PUR), and various ethnic minority groups. Although Romania completed accession talks with the European Union (EU) in December 2004, it must continue to address rampant corruption - while invigorating lagging economic and democratic reforms - before it can achieve its hope of joining the EU, tentatively set for 2007. Romania joined NATO in March of 2004.

I was up a bit before 7 in the morning to go driving out to the ruins of the real life Dracula’s castle. Now I had made a big mistake in hiring this car that I hadn’t worked out yet. 1. they drive on the other side of the road, which means the rest of the car is to your right not to your left 2. the car was a manual and I drive an auto, so I was changing gears with the wrong hand 3. the map that the hostel had provided me was not so good for driving - [View Full Entry]

Felt a little seedy the next morning and didn’t get going until about 11am. Retraced my way back to the train station and got myself a ticket to Bucuresti (Bucharest is the English version), which is a two hour train ride south on the Wallachian plain. 42 lei for a first class seat, or 38 for second class... seemed like a no brainer and I thought better to pay a little bit more and be looked after a bit better away from the gypsies, but turns out when I got on the train it was one big carriage. First class was [View Full Entry]

Day One So by the time I got to Budapest I was exhausted, albeit a little cranky from my lack of sleep. As soon as I got off the train, there were tons of people ready to scam me. Ie. Exchanging money at a "better" rate than the bank when he had counterfeit money. People were offering me rooms for "cheap" in a "good" part of town. The funny thing is that with my sunglasses people get confused about my nationality. So I get people yelling at me Hey Senorita! or they show me a piece of paper with Japanese on [View Full Entry]

Loredana, Luis and Me
Maybe my last entry from Europe! Took the train to Constanta, on the Black Sea. Weather is a little better here, only 91F! The train ride was OK; Romania finally modernized their rail system a bit and bought some InterCity trains with A/C. The ride was supposed to be 3 hours, but took 4. The weather was so hot that the tracks expanded, forcing the train to go slower. Friends met me and we had a few drinks and explored the city. Met a very cool couple from Luxembourg. I didn’t realize the country was so small - about the size [View Full Entry]

DINNER WITH FRIENDS
Total tab - $40 :):) I love it!
Still bumping around Romania. Seeing a lot of old friends. Weather is stifling hot, over 100F. Most cars and buildings here have no A/C, so it’s a sauna. Bucharest has changed a lot since I was here 3 years ago. They join the EU on January 1, and there is a sense of excitement. New construction is going on everywhere and lots of business opportunities. The country has been occupied so often recently, first by the Germans, then the Russians, and the revolution was less than 20 years ago, but you can definitely see how things get better and better. We'd arrived...in Bucuresti. We got off the train, amidst chaos....and thank god Liam found us! Anyway, found our way to the international departure lounge, and bought tickets to Bulgaria tomorrow ( got yelled at, because we hadn't specified that we wanted them for TOMORROW...not today!!) Then we tried to get on a bus. Yelled at by Romanian bus drivers. ( Do you see a trend..?) The we ran across the street....yelled at by policemen! Finally we found out hostel ( which was miles away, and full of Irishmen who seemed to just play on the Play Station all day. We left [View Full Entry]

Champagne anyone?
Travel delays, so only spent 12 hours in Vienna, and spent all of it sleeping. Bummer- but what to do? My German stinks anyway. Had mixed feelings about leaving Prague this time. 5 years ago when I was there it was mysterious and exotic and had a little air of danger about it. Now there is a McDonalds on every corner and EVERYONE speaks English and watches NYPD Blue. Prices have tripled since I was last there. Cab driver told me that you have to leave the city to find the real Czechs and the real prices, but one look at [View Full Entry]

This building is sort of depressing, really. The Romanians were thinking about demolishing it, seeing how it is a symbol of the waste of the Communist era, but then that would be an even bigger waste.... [more]
This city has a bad rap. I took a night train here, got woken up for two hours by the border guards, arrived at 6:30 in the morning. I had read and heard from other backpackers how bad the taxis are, so when a guy came up to me I was cautious: (Romanian accent) "Where are you staying?" "Oh, I already got a place." "My place is really nice, I drive you straight there, Butterfly Hostel." Now, I knew some people who had stayed there, and they really liked it, but I bet that he didn't work for them. "No, it's [View Full Entry]

Me making sure the equipment doesn't roll away.
We have now finished our tour in Romania but this last week has been full of calamities. It all started about four days ago when Dina, Karoline, and I were sharing a room and were attacked by a massive swarm of mosquitos. I was trying to fall asleep when I started hearing a buzzing sound in my ear. I was really tired so I tried to ignore it and just sleep. Then after about an hour I had had enough and woke up Karoline to ask for some OFF. When Dina heard me she said she had not been able to [View Full Entry]

oh man. romania. never thought i'd make it back here. a lack of funds could've been blamed, although family matters sometimes protrude certain cavernous cavities of the heart, and pain becomes a tad more real than i would like it to. i spent the first few days (beginning may 26th) walking up and down bucharest, drying up my lungs with 555 tobacco, but most importantly, smearing my heart with good consistent familiar words from alexandra, a much-needed preparation for the upcoming meeting with my mother, aunt, and everyone else. bucharest is bucharest. many streets, even more people to see, m [View Full Entry]
