Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

Sintra and Lagos Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos
I´m in Lagos, a beach town in the Algarve. I just got here at 9 pm so I haven´t had a chance to explore yet, but supposedly it has Portugal´s finest beaches. Yesterday I did a day-trip with a Dutchman and a Frenchman to Sintra, a wonderful 18th century town with a hilltop pine-forest setting. We toured a bazaar palace that looked more like something from Disneyland than something that someone would actualy live in. The highlight was undoubtedly the handcarved wooden toilet in the royal bathroom. Later that night, in Lisbon, I went out with a whole group of Europeans [View Full Entry]

So I´m in Lisbon and I could not be happier. The plane ride was easy enough and I was fortunate to see one of those wonderful fast-forward sunrises one only experiences while traveling directly East at 600 mph. Approaching Lisbon, we flew right over the south-westernly most tip of Europe and I was able to pick out each city along the coast until we got to Lisbon itself. The best part, however, was the bus ride from the airport. I unintentionaly sat next to two French girls, Elodie and Marie-Laure, having never really talked to a French girl, I was delighted [View Full Entry]

Santiago de Compostela (Day 4-5) Camino Portugues from Rubiaes - Tuy - Redondela (50km) Day 4 Rubiaes - Tuy (20km) We walked down to the town by 0600 where the lady from the restaurant promised to be opened for us to sell us some breakfast of coffees and toast. The kitten was left all alone and since it followed us when she was alone I did not like the thought of her getting run over if she tried to follow us on the busy road. So I wrapped her up in a coat and carried her to the outside of the [View Full Entry]

The morning was still dark and cool with a lot of fog of which we had to start looking very closely for the Yellow Arrows to show us the way. (On the previous trip the group missed an arrow and went the wrong way, they had a difficult start. So we all had to be on the look out for the elusive yellow arrows. These arrows can be a bit hidden, rubbed out, faded, or in a number of [View Full Entry]

Camino de Santiago de Compostela - Portuguese Trail with Badajoz walking group. Total of 151km On my first trip away from home I decided to head for Spain, being my birth country and understanding the language. It gave me the opportunity to go on the Camino Portuges to Santiago de Compostela with the a Spanish walking club. This trip gave me the sensation that I must come and walk it again. A number or people on the trail stated this same feeling and a few were on their 2nd, 3rd and 5th trip to Santiago. So here is my journal notes, [View Full Entry]

Guess what, another outdoor bar scene... Great times, very hot. I was in Lisbon during February, July and October. The first trip was mostly checking out the city. I was only there a couple days and stayed at the Marriott way north of the city close to the irport. Next time I stayed in the Sofitel, a 15 minute walk from the happening parts of the city! The Sofitel is a great value and is newly renovated. Also close to the bars ;) I'll add more later. [View Full Entry]

The first big trip that I took when I was in Spain was an overnight bus ride to Lisbon, Portugal. We stayed there for 4 days. We had a good time in Lisbon as we went out to a few real good restaurants and bars. We walked around and saw many historical sites and also took a day trip to Sintra where there were 2 different castle complexes that we visited. [View Full Entry]

Ahoy mates, just arrived in Lisbon last night. I guess the only thing I can say is INCREDIBLE! Sailing the high seas was nuts. 240 nautical miles from land in the Bay of Biscay behind the helm in a gail force 7 wind with waves crashing over the sides at 12:00 at night. Completely insane. After 5 days at sea, there is nothing like sailing along the Spanish and Portugese coast visiting ports. Vigo, Spain was beautiful, (especially the beach the captain anchored us off of - NUDE!); Porto, Portugal was filled with port tasting at the 30+ port houses. I [View Full Entry]
