Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

Ahhh, the Coast?

These pictures speak for themselves. We were traveling the the coubtryside and came upon a small town. While passing through, there was a pig slaughter going on in the middle of the "main road". Day in Fatima

We are planning on a trip to Fatima on Sunday and then I'll have some pictures to post from there. In the meantime here is a little info about this city.... Fatima became know in 1916 when Virgin Mary appeared to the 3 little shepherd children, Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia. In 1918 the then priest of Fatima asks that he be allowed to erect an alter where the apparitions took place. However Francisco dies in 1919, 15 days before the inauguration of the alter. Belem

Thats right! More from Lisbon. We visited some great stuff today. Belem Tower being one. Went to downtown Lisbon with the dad. He was pushed, he claims, to the ground by some old Portugese ladies. This is not true. My dad has a history of falling down 1-2 times every trip. IT HAPPENS. At frist i have the feeling of i hope he's okay, but that quickly passes to one of hilarity. Angry dad/ Perfect time
Annoying my dad when here already lost his patience= money!

The title dosent do much, but this has the potential of being an excellent blog. We arrived in Protugal around 7 am their time. In reality its 2 in the morning and my dad dosent look to happy. What does this mean to me? Time to annoy him. Any chance i get to exact revenge is the perfect time! We make way from downtown Lisbon to our hotel room in Cascais pronounced cashcaish. Last desperate shopping...

Håvard outside Estadio Luz
Outside Colombo Mall and Estadio Luz

The last day in Lisbon, we had a few hours to do some last desperate shopping! Håvard was looking for jack-cables and a stage-tuner, and Siri was looking for cakes. We went out to the ENORMOUS shopping mall Colombo! We took the metro(blue line) to Colegio Militar/Luz, the station was just beneath the mall. The mall was so big that we got lost a couple of times! Siri spent 20 minutes just looking for a shop that sold baby-clothes(for Håvards niese...)...and another 20 minutes finding back to the café where Håvard was sitting drinking his cafezinho. Belem and Jack Johnson-concert

Tower of Belem

It was a very very hot day, and we decided to go out to Belem. We were recommended to take tram no. 15 out there - because the trams themselves are an attraction, and that the tram drives along the river Tague, very nice. We stood at Praça do Comercio waiting and waiting......until a local guy came up to us and told us that it would be a better idea to take the bus to Cais do Sodré, there were more buses for Belem from there. Driving in Lisbon
Very nice roads, bus some can drive a bit crazy

7 a.m: Wake up! Breakfast. Bus to the airport! 9.a.m: Picking up the rental car. We had booked one in advance, since our travel agent had a good deal. We strongly recommend renting a car from the airport because 1) it is very easy to go from the airport to the highways out of Lisbon, and 2) unless you have no fear at all you don't want to drive around in central Lisbon in a car that is not yours. 10.a.m: Arriving Sintra, an old village some 30 kms northwest of Lisbon. A short visit in Ericeira

The edge of Portugal
A very dramatic coastline!

From Sintra we drove out to the Atlantic Ocean and the fishermans village Ericeira! We believe Ericeira is a popular sunday-trip-destination, and since the weather was extremly good there was a lot of people on the way in and out of Ericeira. The drive out there was very nice, through small sleepy villages, up and down hills and valleys. The roads in Portugal are in good condition, and it is very easy to find the way.
