Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

Day 5 Silves via Portimao G: Today we finally got out of bed a little tired and ready for our trip to see Silves and explore more of Portimao. First we walked around the old section of Portimao and let me tell you, it is in rough shape. Not in a Ghetto sort of way but in old, ruins, and damaged sort of way. It is weird to see a very nice house, fixed up and stuck to an abandon house with no roof and chains across the doors. Found out later the reason some of the owners do not fix [View Full Entry]

G: Today was another georgeous day in Portugal. Man you can not ask for better weather then what we are having, sunny, clear days temperature around 30 degrees and there is a nice cooling wind blowing to keep you fresh…. How is everyone’s weather back home? Anyway, today we took the public transit system to head into Portimao to check the shopping and town. We arrived around 1130ish and took a look around all the car dealerships. They have many different types of vehicles that are neat to look at. Cannot wait till I rent one in a couple of days. J: Well folks Day 2 proved to me yet again that there is absolutely no reason for me to use Tan Accelerator. Being the ever-so-anxious-for-results person that I am, I just had to get a fast tan and use the accelerator on both me and white-as-a-mozzarella-cheese Guy. Not such a good idea on your first day of tanning. You would think that I would have learned my lesson in Florida, when Nat and I turned the front side of good friend Mark into a Lobster, putting him out of commission for a couple of days…. Oh well… Guy will learn eventually [View Full Entry]

J: This morning Guy and I woke up leisurely and waited for the other folks to arrive… and waited…and waited and … finally around noonish we got a call that they had finally landed and would shortly be at the apartments. So we packed our bags and checked out. But before leaving I took advantage of the internet café offered at the hotel to check the comments to our blog site. Up to this point, we haven’t been able to access these comments as the free wireless network service provider we were using would bar access to the comment’s site. Sidebar: [View Full Entry]

Leaving for the Beach
The Really White Boys
WHAT?

Tonight we discovered Alvor. A tiny hubbub of action and entertainment. After a short siesta we got freshened up a bit and headed out to get a bite to eat (Not that we really needed more food in our bellies after all the meals we had on the plane trips!) We took a short cab ride to the town and walked around the main area to decide which little restaurant was calling our name. During our walking we found a side street with like 4 Irish bars in the same area, sort of like an Irish corner…. which is good news [View Full Entry]

G: Well nothing to really report, got to love flying business class. The big seats, great food, unlimited service with a smile…….wonder what the transit air line will be for the others? We did have a typical Judith moment on the way to the Ottawa airport, yes we were late leaving, how did you all guess? But for once it was not Judith’s fault, shocking I know but Tuhin was 20 minutes late. Not a big deal because we still made it in time for the Ottawa 2-1 victory to stay alive another day. Now we are waiting for our last [View Full Entry]

10 hrs and we're off to Portugal with a stop in London and Lisbon! Yipeee... I think all the people who are staying behind are more excited about this trip than we are - NOT! I've been bouncing off the walls for the last three days. Poor Guy - sleep time has been minimal these last few days! (Greg - get your mind out of the gutter!) Hopefully, we'll manage to keep the blog as lively and entertaining as it was in Japan. I tried to add as many people as I could remember wanted a link to the site - [View Full Entry]

Well folks - 2 more sleeps and we'll be boarding a plane, final destination: the Algarve! We're looking forward to this trip... should be a little more relaxing than the last one and hopefully a little less embarrassing! Take care - and hope you're able to get on to this site with more ease than last time. J [View Full Entry]

This past weekend was probably the best of my life. No exaggeration. For this reason, I am working backwards. I still have a lot to catch up on from Morocco, the Canary Islands, Valencia, and everything in between, but I don’t want to forget anything I did this weekend. Here goes. My roommate and I signed up for this trip to Lisbon for the first weekend in May, which is a 4 day weekend. There are two holidays celebrated on May 1 and 2; Workers Day and Madrid Day, so it makes for good traveling. We did just that. This company [View Full Entry]

April 12th, 2006 Day 97 of our cruise of 105 Madeira, Portugal We disembarked at 8:15, before the shuttle bus run, so we walked the 1 ˝ mile to town. First, we visited the Mercado and saw fresh fish arriving, beautiful flowers spread out for viewing and all types of crafts from Madeira for sale. We then rode the cable car to the top of the volcanic mountain to the chuch of Santa Maria del Monte. To get partly down we used an antique wicker toboggan ride manned by two men wearing straw hats, it was a lot of fun. We [View Full Entry]
