Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

This past weekend was probably the best of my life. No exaggeration. For this reason, I am working backwards. I still have a lot to catch up on from Morocco, the Canary Islands, Valencia, and everything in between, but I don’t want to forget anything I did this weekend. Here goes. My roommate and I signed up for this trip to Lisbon for the first weekend in May, which is a 4 day weekend. There are two holidays celebrated on May 1 and 2; Workers Day and Madrid Day, so it makes for good traveling. We did just that. This company [View Full Entry]

April 12th, 2006 Day 97 of our cruise of 105 Madeira, Portugal We disembarked at 8:15, before the shuttle bus run, so we walked the 1 ˝ mile to town. First, we visited the Mercado and saw fresh fish arriving, beautiful flowers spread out for viewing and all types of crafts from Madeira for sale. We then rode the cable car to the top of the volcanic mountain to the chuch of Santa Maria del Monte. To get partly down we used an antique wicker toboggan ride manned by two men wearing straw hats, it was a lot of fun. We [View Full Entry]

1) Portugal is definetly and defiantly not Spain. Before I arrived, I too would have been hard pressed to distinguish between Portugal and its larger Iberian cousin. Portugal does however, retain an immediate and distinct atmosphere of its own, although this atmosphere is hard to define. I suppose it seems somewhat Carribean or South American to me, although having never been to the Carribean or South America I'm not exactly an authority on the matter. But it is certainly multicultural and seems much more exotic than other european countries 2) Until I recieve conclusive evidence to the [View Full Entry]

Priceless Porto

 Europe » Portugal » Northern » Porto
Hello Reader. Mike and I had contacted a couchsurfer named Joao in Porto who was more than happy to host us for the two days that we would be there. Joao was by far the most bizarre host I've had. I loved him immediately. I really enjoy people who are different and are comfortable with that. Joao was an unemployed photographer who sometimes would DJ under a female's name. He had a few party wigs and the high-heals to match. See what I mean? But I knew it was love when he woke up after our first night at his flat, [View Full Entry]

Hello Reader. Mike and I, after our tour through Morocco, were on our way to Portugal. Lisboa was first on our list. We had contacted a couchsurfer there by the name of André Lino. How he came to be our host was rooted almost entirely on the fact that he had hosted Kyle, who we also hosted in Valencia just before Las Fallas. Kyle, as he does, left such a good impression with André that all we had to do was drop his name and André was more than willing to put us up for a couple of nights. Unfortunately we [View Full Entry]

How many countries can I go to while in Spain? I selfishly wanted to add another country to my list so I went to Portugal for two days. I took the bus to Faro and had a day at the beach and then wandered around the town. There wasn’t much to see so I enjoyed the tranquil little town and the fact that there wasn’t a pressure to see all the sights. I have Semana Santa off from school which is the celebration of Holy week. During the week there are 50-60 different processions in Seville. The routes symbolize the journey [View Full Entry]

Portugal Baby!!!

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos
Hello everybody! So, this last weekend I decided I needed some time away from the cold and windy weather of Ireland and decided to head down to sunny Portugal!! And it was seriously the best four days of my life! I'm not kidding. My friend Erin and I caught an early flight from Dublin and, after much delay due to the french strikes, we eventually arrived safe and sound in Faro. We weren't having the best luck with the time schedule and had to wait another hour for the bus, but we were happy just sitting at a nearby cafe and [View Full Entry]
