Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

Picking up a car at the aiport in Lisbon, we drove west along what is known as the Estoril Coast. Development along the coast started the same way it did in the Algarve: tiny fishing villages around coves where fishing boats could safely be anchored. Those fishing villages along the Estoril Coast have by now grown to the point that it is just one long town! The neat thing about it is that trains run every fifteen minutes in and out of Lisbon, stopping at every town along the way. The first three nights of our stay in the area was [View Full Entry]

During our spanish adventure we decided to go over to Portugal to explore Lisbon and the surrounding areas. On the 31st of January we took an overnight train to Lisbon and arrived the morning of the 1st of February in Lisbon. After getting settled, we explored Rossio Square where the Teatro Nacional is. Next, we spent the rest of the afternoon at the Oceanaria de Lisboa, or the Lisbon Aquarium. The aquarium has a huge tank (the size of four football fields) where the animals of the world's oceans can interact just like they do in the wild. Otters as you [View Full Entry]

English At the moment we are taking a day off from biking, and we are staying in a small town called Alvor next to the city Portimao. We have been traveling for about a week, we left from Punta Umbria which is a small beach town in Spain where Rocio's sister lives) and now we are in Portugal. We've mostly been traveling along the side of the highway. So far we´ve mostly been camping, althouhg one night was spent on the beach and another in a hotel. We've been travleing about 40 kilometers a day, and we usually travle between 12 [View Full Entry]

Forgive my not having blogged for nearly two weeks. My adventures will have to be condensed until I get back on track. I´ll pick up in Madrid, our first stop on our five-day sojourn back into Spain. I was not prepared for Madrid´s charm. It is a beautiful city with a vibrant street life and exceptional culture (what little we were able to see of it). Fortunately, our hotel turned out to be very well situated for reaching what we wanted to see in the three days we were there. We were able to walk everywhere, allowing us to enjoy the [View Full Entry]

The End Is Nigh

 Europe » Portugal » Madeira » Madeira
So this is it, my final entry of the cruise and what a time we have had. Our last port of call.Madeira, was reached on Thursday around 0800hrs. The weather overnight had been somewhat rough and many of us were kept awake with the banging throughout the ship by the waves hitting the bough, not to mention the heavy swell. Thought after that we might be in for a rough day but in fact turned out fine. The Maderian archepelago lies in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Mexico and north of the Canary Islands. The largest of these Portuguese islands, some [View Full Entry]

Goodbye to last port
Goodbye from him

I finally went for the first time in Lisboa and discovered not only a great and magic city, but also wonderful and warm people. If you ask for your way, they will change their direction, even go into a shop to get the right direction and then explain you in either Portugese or English if they speak. The city is big, however you can walk quite a lot and the pedestrians ways are lovely with small stones. When you can see so many restaurants and coffee terraces that mean that the people really like good life !! Amazing prices too!! Imagine [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, Its been a really long time since I've written an entry, sorry! We have had no luck finding convienient, cheap wifi connections here in Portugal. We are all fine, Ian and I are recovering from some kind cold/flu/chest infection. James is well, his hair has grown so much he looks like something from the seventies! As ever to make the most of internet time I'll spend it uploading photos instead of writing. We are currently in Central Portugal, near Tabua. We are really enjoying travelling around Portugal, its very beautiful and the people are friendly, welcoming and helpful every [View Full Entry]

a very big well!

Had another great weekend this past week, just got home from Lisbon, Portugal. It was fun to get a chance to see another European country and a new culture as well. I went up with 6 other friends from my school; 2 Canadians, 1 Philipino, 1 Chilean and 2 Colombians. We left Salamanca Friday morning at 5:00 am and just barely made the train. As we got to the station the train was already there, but we didn't have any tickets yet. Some train station employee told us that it was fine, we could just buy tickets on the train. As much as I love La Mancha, it is always nice to get away. I spent the whole of January waiting excitedly to spend the next Puente in Lisbon and Porto. As usual it was the normal mad rush to Madrid and the the airport. I seem incapable of chilled travel. We had organised to couch surf too, and as it was my first time I was pretty nervous. Im not sure why, I had hosted without any difficulties, and looking back...there was nothing to be worried about. So we headed over to our host's neighbourhood. Reluctantly handed over our smallest [View Full Entry]

Storms and Siestas

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve
The Arabs named this part of Portugal ‘the Al-gharb’ (land of sunsets) but upon our arrival, it was difficult to see anything, much less a sunset! After the most drought-stricken summer on record, the heavens were wide open…just in time for our three- night stay. For much of the duration, the high winds whipped the branches of the palm trees from side to side, and the sky remained overcast (an unpalatable colour of grey and dirty dish water). The rain poured with a ferocity that was verging on the tropical. There were several thunderstorms, which caused electricity to moment [View Full Entry]
