We flew into Porto and picked up our rental car at Hertz. Hertz told us you get the best deal if you reserve a small car then upgrade when you arrive. We rented a car with GPS or else we spend a lot of time lost. When we arrived at the Sheraton (free on points from our credit card), there was a commotion going on. We were told the police would not allow us to park in front of the hotel and the hotel employee would park our car. When we went in we found out the Portugal National football team (soccer to us) was staying in the hotel and would soon be down to board the bus to the game. We waited with everyone else and the press for them to come downstairs. They were ... read more

We picked up our good friends Randy and Nancy who happen to be staying two blocks away (what a great coincidence) using our rental car and drove to Guimaraes. it took us about 45 minutes to drive to the castle. There are actually two castles on the property a newer one that is furnished and a older one that is ruins, there is a small fee to visit the furnished castle. The castle was built for the first king of Portugal. I enjoyed the castles, I always enjoy furnished castles because you see old furniture, art and tapestries. We skipped visiting the town of Guimaraes because we had other stops but it is an Unesco Works site and if you have time is worth a visit. Off to Bragga only 20 minutes away to visit the ... read more

Move to Spain and lots of friends and acquaintances message you to say they’re coming and to ask when/where they can meet up. I certainly didn’t anticipate how many friends/relatives would come to Europe, but it has been nice to reunite with people and see new places. A Canadian friend I knew from Daegu was traveling in Portugal and Spain with a couple of friends, so we decided to meet in Braga, Portugal, for a day at the beginning of May. Braga is only about 1.5 hours from Ourense, but unfortunately there’s no direct public transportation, and blablacars are also rare. So, realistically, the main way is to go to Vigo and then get to Braga from there via bus or train. Because of the schedules, I decided to go to Braga on Sunday, stay overnight, ... read more

Day 3 - Quinta Nova Winery Hotel. Douro Valley We are surrounded by hundreds of acres of vineyards just starting to leaf out and it is raining and foggy this morning. We have been told that this region has 9 months of rain and 3 months of HELL, hot hot weather in the summer. It allows for perfect grape growing. We have been invited in a tour of the winery in about 45 minutes with the French family that are also staying here, grandparents, son-in-law and daughter, and two children, a toddler and an infant in a stroller. Brave folks to travel with kids. But they seem to be making it work.... read more

Thursday - Day 2 Quinta Nova Winery Hotel - Douro Valley, Portugal We arrived here yesterday afternoon from Coimbra after a beautiful drive through central Portugal. Stunning scenery, and it wasn't even totally sunny. The landforms remind me of Northern California, with lots of eucalyptus trees (imported from Australia that are harvested for paper) growing amid conifers of coastal cypress. The housing stock looks quite substantial and well taken care of. We went through only 2 or 3 villages, but there are a lot of folks living on the land in spacious housing areas. We stopped once on the 3 hour trip at a large Pronto station which had one person working it. It was huge though, with a restaurant attached. The roads were in great shape. Our driver Louis explained that the EU Stimulus Money ... read more

It’s the Second Sunday in April, April 10, 2016 and the sun has just burst out after the heaviest rain shower of the trip. The Internet Weather says COASTAL EVENT meaning we have high winds and intermittent sun and rain. We are still in Porto, Portugal until tomorrow. Larry and I like this town a lot. It’s smaller than Lisbon, about half a million. It has old world charm on every street. But Cusack just about did himself in yesterday when he was walking out of our hotel and tried to walk through the unopened clear glass door. BAM. He didn’t fall down but he has a nice goose-egg bruise over his left eyebrow. I was concerned yesterday that he might have a slight concussion, so I watch him carefully throughout the afternoon, and put ice ... read more

We are pleased to say we did wake up in the morning and in fact awoke about 6 other times in the night as we tossed and turned, coughed and spluttered. There is a Spaniard in Santiago who must be feeling red hot pins through his eyes about now! We shall have to cancel today as neither of us is capable of getting out and about today. Anyway at least the weather would be holding us back if it wasn’t for this flu virus we are both in the grips of. There was an almighty thunderstorm blow in off the sea around daybreak preceded by short bouts of hail. After over 12 hours in bed we thought that a nice warm shower might help revive the soul at least. After that we had a very light ... read more

Porto Day #4 - Saturday morning in a light rain. Yesterday was quite a beautiful day in Porto and we got to see more of the city since we took a Taxi in the evening to the Casa do Musica. I had found in my research about Porto last winter that the City had a concert hall designed by Rem Koolhass in 1999. I liked his work on the Seattle Public Library and so I found a concert that we could attend, and also see the building. Well, both the building and the concert were very modern and I suppose hip would be a word you would have to use. Quit cringing. First, the concert hall is the most modern hall I've ever been in. The outside is all white, clueing you to know it was ... read more

When one gets struck down by a flu virus it is natural to try and remember where and who you might have been with to catch something so awful. Gretchen is putting it down to the guy who hoicked (NZ meaning) on numerous occasions outside our apartment in Santiago. Goodness knows what we walked through each time we walked down the narrow little alleyway when we were going out. Gretchen’s case of the flu has become full blown with the chills and hot flushes, chesty cough and aching joints and there is no way she is going anywhere today. For me it has only given me a sore throat and in myself I feel OK. The weather anyway is awful this morning with showers driving in off the sea and a chilly wind. As I got ... read more
