19, 20 & 21 March 2017 Arrived in Porto at around 4pm. There is a time difference of an hour between here and Spain, so we were able to get out and wander. What an amazing city. It is a Sunday afternoon and it seems everyone is out enjoying the beautiful weather and the markets on the banks of the Duoro river. The area of Porto is known mainly for being the original Port Wine developers. We went into a “cave” (we might call it a wine store) and there I discovered that Port wine comes in white, ruby and tawny. It all tasted pretty good to me. There are many Port Wine caves and we are told some are better than others. In Porto the people really enjoy cod I am told, so that evening ... read more

En route to Luso & Mata Nacional do Bucao a 105ha National Forest, so we are winding our way up the slopes to Luso a spa town, we are following a sat nav location to a wild camp, the road goes higher and windier, and somehow this isn’t looking promising!! Now I have to say that we find our way to each night’s sleep stop in the same way, but sometimes they are more accurate than others, sometimes they just leave you at a place that looks the most inappropriate stop. Today is not looking hopeful but then we see another motorhome and he takes to a road we hadn’t been happy to attempt, so we take the same road and find a car park, things are looking promising. We are here because another couple (who ... read more

Bom Dia, I like wine. All wine. It is delicious. So when I had the opportunity to visit the Alto Douro, the world's oldest continuously demarcated win region, having been demarcated in 1756! I did not want to take the train, so I joined with a tour that was going by minivan as this would give me an opportunity to see more of the Alto Douro. The first stop was the gorgeous town of Amarante, with its stone buildings and medieval bridge. There was not a lot of things to see or do in town, and it was a brief stop, but it was very peaceful and incredibly picturesque! We continued to drive along the road through the hills and valleys of northern Portugal, over a bridge that was very similar to the Millau Viaduct in ... read more

Bom dia, Peter was sitting at his office working hard one day, or possibly searching the internet for discounted flights as was most likely the case, and came across an excellent deal to Portugal. Being the last country in Western Europe I had not visited, he bought the ticket and started packing. As there are not many flights directly to Europe from Vancouver, the flight would involve a transfer in Toronto. I flew standby, and was actually able to get an emergency exit row with more than enough leg room! The connecting flight in Toronto, was not as smooth. Firstly, there was a security breach because, apparently "someone managed to wander into an area they should not have been. Don't worry, it's all fine now." However, this meant security doors had been shut in the terminal ... read more

17 September 2016, Saturday, Viana do Castelo to Vila Praia de Ancora, Day 19, 16.25 miles. Advertised by Follow the Camino as a 11 mile day. Correction: well, after seeing a bigger picture of the beautiful flower bush of yesterday I can assure you it is not a belladonna plant! Belladonnas were everywhere. I think it might be in the fuschia family-- Viana is a shopper's paradise. Fortunately for our bulging bags and much thinner wallets it is early in the morning and the shops are closed. I am particularly intrigued with the outstanding textile handicrafts. The window displays of regional dress just explode with color. The other side of the street faces the river and fronting the riverbank are a series of very modern style buildings. Viana is distinguishing itself as a center for modern ... read more

Porto, one of the biggest street parties I’ve ever been to and this all happened by chance... During a brief trip away to Portugal this summer, myself and three other friends intended on travelling up to Porto on the 17th September as we knew we only had time to fit in the sights of this great drink loving city for one night only. When we spoke to locals in Lisbon about our intentions to road trip up that day we were in for a little surprise. It so happens that this specific evening Porto would come alive with music & culture from all around Portugal, bringing a togetherness of foodies, locals and party lovers. Oh and four likely folk from The Midlands, UK. The festival was in its 6th consecutive year of running and with no ... read more

16 September 2016, day 18, Friday. Esposende to Viana do Castelo. 16.79 miles. This will be another day trying to follow the arrows as we have no detailed notes or Brierley guide. Fortunately, Moira has a more current edition with some coastal route maps. We pass a cafe with a cat enjoying the sun. Then a black lab dog walking a 2 inch wide wall with its owner watching closely from the porch. We see the kiwi that grow in northern Portugal like grapes from trellises. And the taxi post man poses by his motorcycle as he makes his rounds delivering the mail. We pass along a forest path where we find a monument from the region of Esposende to the Coastal Portuguese Camino. It has a shape like the country of Portugal with Lisbon and ... read more

10 September 2016, Day 15, São Joao de Madeira to Grijo. 19 km or 12 miles. This relatively short day allowed us to leave around 0810 and walk at a leisurely pace. After self service breakfast at Hotel AS on the central commercial plaza we got right on the Camino track through town. At the Oliva factories we took photos of the two statues: one of a shoemaker and another of hat making. Our morning was spent wandering the mix of suburbs and industrial areas as the route undulated up and down almost all on pavement. As we stopped to take some photos we saw a pilgrim behind us. When he caught up I learned he was Kevin from Cairns, Australia. We enjoyed our day walking with him. We learned his wife is with a group ... read more

I have to apologize....it is just the start of the summer, and I'm already solidly late on my travel blogging! Good news, if I'm late, it's because I'm slightly busy having a lot of fun, and discovering, or re-discovering places I always had on my list! But first, here I am in Porto after few days in Luxembourg. Cheap flight on Easyjet direct from Luxembourg to Porto. I arrived a little late, but in Portugal, it's not really an issue! I took the midnight tram to the city center...and even at midnight, the tram was packed! Porto is only a short stop for me. My next stop is...for once I'll say it, Madrid. I looked for the cheapest option between Luxembourg and Madrid. Porto came in a a bonus with a combination of Easyjet and TAP. ... read more
