We arrived in Portugal, without any fanfare, no passport control and not even a sign saying ‘welcome to Portugal’, but there was a warm welcome at our campsite. With a short walk over the dunes to a fabulous, very windy beach we were astounded by the number of kite and wind surfers in the water, the colours, the tricks and criss-crossing it was incredible they didn’t get knotted together! We had inadvertently chosen a kite surfer’s paradise, Praia do Cabedelo. A short hop on a ferry from our beach location and we were in the bustling town of Viana do Castelo. A medieval centre with lots of small shops and restaurants, houses and other buildings are decorated with some beautiful tiles. Just behind the station is a 100 year old funicular railway that takes you up ... read more

16 September 2016, day 18, Friday. Esposende to Viana do Castelo. 16.79 miles. This will be another day trying to follow the arrows as we have no detailed notes or Brierley guide. Fortunately, Moira has a more current edition with some coastal route maps. We pass a cafe with a cat enjoying the sun. Then a black lab dog walking a 2 inch wide wall with its owner watching closely from the porch. We see the kiwi that grow in northern Portugal like grapes from trellises. And the taxi post man poses by his motorcycle as he makes his rounds delivering the mail. We pass along a forest path where we find a monument from the region of Esposende to the Coastal Portuguese Camino. It has a shape like the country of Portugal with Lisbon and ... read more

It was blowing fairly strongly when we arrived in Viana yesterday afternoon but this morning has dawned calm and with a bright sun rising behind us which means it looks good for a trip across the water to explore this morning and then a walk along the boardwalk and beach in the afternoon. We have found fruit that is in season very inexpensive during our travels and so our daily breakfast has been consisting of 3 pieces of fruit each cut up with muesli and yogurt. Sometimes the bowls have been filled almost to overflowing but we have always managed to get through it and it sets us up right for the day. Toast and coffee and occasionally scrambled or poached eggs finish breakfast off nicely and we don’t usually need a substantial lunch. The port ... read more

There is a song written in 1934 by a Spanish songwriter Maria Grever titled ‘What a diff'rence a day mades’ and today it couldn’t have been truer. The weather in Santiago hadn’t been that kind to us over the last 3 days just as we were starting to think that warmer temperatures for the northern spring might have been here. But this morning has dawned brilliantly fine and sunny,if a little cool still. Mind you we leave ourselves open to the changes in the weather by moving on every 2 or 3 days. Packing up was easy in this apartment because it is compact although in saying that there has been enough room to spread ourselves around too. It has been another find on Air BnB and despite the fact that the heating inside could have been ... read more

Viana do Castelo was a surprisingly pleasant place. I say surprisingly because I don’t think any of us were expecting much to be there at all. We were expecting a small town perhaps. What we found when we got there was very lovely. We were berthed up next the Gustav Eiffel bridge. We then ventured into the town centre which was buzzing with activity. It just so happened that we stumbled into the town a night when they were celebrating an outdoor music festival. In the evening we were spoilt by a jazz trio playing bass and guitars in one of the town squares. After us spending time trying to get by in Spanish, to then arrive in another country and not even know how to say thank you was a bit disastrous. The morning after, ... read more

This is a long story today but does it get any better ? It's about our first few days at the villa. Life’s good but at the villa it’s a paradise. It’s just so nice ! Being here at this little spot of nature’s beauty makes one think of other lifestyle opportunities. It will be with great disappointment and reluctance that the eight of us will leave here to return to the ‘normal’ lives we actually live. Being here has given some of us greater insights and an answer to “What would you do if you won the lottery ?” I don't know why this didn't show up but if you click the "villa" on the upper left corner of the black square it will produce the picture. So I added this comment and on reviewing ... read more
