Background: Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986.

Golden Gate Lisbon
Evidently this was built by the same architect as the Golden Gate Bridge.
Ok, no, I’m not home, but doesn’t it look like the Golden Gate Bridge? Seriously though . . . who has been keeping Portugal a secret? I love it! I wish I had more time to spend here and explore. These are my last few days traveling alone and Lisbon is the perfect place to stay. It feels a lot like Orange County and San Francisco wrapped together and the weather is much more manageable at around 75 - 80 degrees versus the 105 degree weather in Seville. With five days in Lisbon I was able to see some great sites [View Full Entry]

Day 12 and here we are at the Portugal capital: Lisbon! We arrived here on a high speed train travelling at a whopping 221km/hr! Our funky hostel was located right into the centre of town, over looking the Rossio Plaza, I think our corner room had the best view in the whole hostel! Our first stop was climbing up the tallest hill in Lisbon to the Castle of Sāo Jorge. We had a look around the old castle walls and up the towers to get sweeping views across another red-roofed city, then made our decent down the cobblestoned road to Lisbon’s [View Full Entry]

Hey guys feel free to let me know if you don’t want to receive these updates, they are pretty detailed and probably boring for you all but these are kind of like our dairies while we are away. Already it is hard to remember what we have been doing so have to write it all down so we don’t forget!! We have just finished 2 days in Lisbon, in some ways it was similar to Porto (heaps of old buildings and history etc) but you can definitely tell that it is the capital and has a much bigger city feel. Cool [View Full Entry]

6-19-07 Slept well last night and woke up in Portugal. I love these night trains. The gentle rocking motion of the train really knocks me out. I got up and stood outside our train sleeping compartment for about an hour trying to get glimpses of the surrounding landscape. The times I did see something out the window there was not much to see. The train arrived about a 1/2 hour late. I talked to a guy from Philadephia that was a construction manager there who told his boss he was taking off for awhile to travel. The boss told him as [View Full Entry]

Despite feeling a bit rough (mostly Shaun thanks to the Sangria) this morning after our night out, we all piled in the car for the long drive to Lisbon. The 18 Euro toll for the motorway was also a bit off a shock! We enjoyed some lunch and local custard tarts in the city centre before checking out the sights along the river including a fort in the river and a large monument sculpted with famous historical figures looking out to sea. We then negotiated the winding streets to make our way up to the Castelo de Sao Jorge (St John) [View Full Entry]

MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 11-15: Porto to Lisbon Distance: 334 km (of 8,667 km total) Monday After breakfast, we were off to Lisbon, where Marion would be meeting up with the rest of her UNICEF delegation which was convening for a few days of conferences and seminars there. For some reason, even though we estimated there as no more than 350 km. left to drive, we began counting down, impatiently, waiting to get to the hotel. Lisbon had become our goal - we'd lost our sense of wandering and adventure. We already know scheduled stops are a bad idea for this kind [View Full Entry]

The path we started hiking up instead of taking the trolley. Who would want to take the trolley!
Today, I woke up feeling less than 100%. My throat was a little sore. Maybe I have had a little too much wine over the last few days? Nonetheless, Rob and I had our sights set on Sintra a historic town to the west of Lisbon where the Royals called home. It is said to have a subtropical climate different from the rest of Portugal. The plan was to take the Metro from Chiado to Roma-Areerio and then take a regional train (Sintra Line) to Sintra. Well, we walked to Chiado station and the gates were closed. Okay? We thought [View Full Entry]
