The statue on Vasco Di Gama ship 1497 We were trying to do less walking so we took the sight seeing bus for the next two days. This first day we wanted to visit the Jeronimus Monastry. It houses the Maritime museum and the other side is the Monastry and the chapel. We left at 10.30 and the bus station is just in front of us. It is in the area of Belem. Later we would go to the Belem Tower. The maritime museum was out of this world. Beautiful models of the years 13, 14,and 1500 were exhibited. Also weapons, canons, guns and even clothes from those years were there. Very interested were the stories about Henry The Navigator and Vasco di Gama. A sculpter of an Arch angel was in July 1497 on Vasco di Gama's ship. On a wall painting you could see what they discovered. Interesting that Australia was not really there. It was just a blob. A globe made by Dutch globe maker Janz. Blaew. Dated 1645. Coins of the 1700. The entry was free. Lots more to see so we walked along the front to stand in a row to visit, what we thought was the chapel. We noticed that the row split

siilver coins from 1700 and part went to the Monastry. The other had to be proper dressed for there was a Mess on. We looked at the Monastry first. That was build in 1501. It was an enlargement on the chapel. In the chapel are many tombs. One of them is from Vasco di Gama. We than walked to the Belem tower. It was build in 1515 to defend the entry to Lisboa. We were there in 1970 with the boys, on our boat journey. We just walked to it from the street. Now however the Tower is surrounded by water. We wonder it the boys remember. There is also the famous bridge over the Targus. It is called 21 first of April. The monument to the discoveries is also on the warf. Depicts Henry the Navigator leading a procession of noted explorers, Astronomers and Map makers who suported his mission. Allthough we thought taking the bus we do less walking, but that turned out different. We did walk a lot. We also found a better place to eat with English Menus. Very tired we turned in. Tomorrow another day in Lisboa. Bye Liz & Allan
