I left Tomar this morning on the river route. Once out of the town, it is a delightful path along the Rio Nablão on a mix of gravel and dirt track. Where the River route joins the alternative winter route, I met two other pilgrims, one from Canada and the other from Brazil. It was a start of a day the pilgrim encounters. All good things must end however and it wasn't long before I was back on asphalt road. There wasn't much relief from that for most of the rest of the day. Then what release it was was to walk back on forest track was a little sad because it was through plantation eucalypts. I hadn't realized how sad it would make me to see eucalypts in formal rows as plantation trees. It seemed ... read more

Saturday, October 28th, Tomar, 2nd day, Hostel 2300 Thomar, 15 kms. Two weeks ago we got on a plane for Lisbon. I have to say that so far the Portuguese Camino has been an entirely different experience than the Camino Frances last year. There are much fewer fellow pilgrims, much less support along the path (places to eat and stay), less knowledge even of the Camino by the Portuguese people. Today it began to feel more “Camino-ish.” It got hillier (downright steep at times), with more off-road hiking through forests and olive groves and along rivers. We were walking towards our half-way point, and the heat and hills were getting to me. We had 2 alternate routes to choose from ahead of us, and we took the one with the café where we could wait for ... read more

Day 7, Tomar to Alvaiazere After two rest days in Tomar, which we used to visit Fatima and see the Knights Templar Castle, we are back on the Camino Portugal headed towards Santiago. Today is another very long day, according to Brierley, it is almost thirty kilometers if you make no wrong turns. So we're up at 5:45, have bags packed, and pick up our breakfast/lunch sacks to be out the door at 6:45. The way out of town is over the Old Bridge and immediately left along the riverbank to an old abandoned canal. As it turned out we turn too soon and had to backtrack to find a street which then took us along the abandoned canal. This went well until the road ended in a very narrow path along the river and in the ... read more

31 August 2016, Wednesday A wonderful day to sleep in. August 31 Wednesday. Exploring Tomar--synagogue and Knights Templar If one is a romantic and grows up, as a child, in a little ranching town in eastern Oregon, you are prone to dreams of far-away, exotic places. Tomar is the answer with its knights and castle. However, hopefully the first picture up will be that of 'Our Lady of Fatima.' I reread the last blog and realized we had not even put in a picture of her! But first we have breakfast and meet a gentleman from Washington state who is traveling with his wife and 91 year old mother-in-law. Pretty soon the mother-in-law comes in, all ready to walk. They had planned to have a walking vacation but, since the Camino is not well marked and ... read more

Today we head to Tomar. Our destination Convento de Cristobal, founded in 1160 by the Templars (Monk/Knights). It looks like a castle but it was a monastery/castle. This was a good stop with lots to see. Since the Knights lived in the monastery there are dorms, kitchen, chapel and rooms for meeting. We had a snack at the castle then headed to Fatima. Fatima lots of tourists and pilgrims here. The pilgrims crawl on their knees to the site where Mary appeared to three children. There are two churchs here as well as the holy spot. It was very moving to be here. We bought large candles and set them in an area with flames. The large newer church was empty but the old church was filled with visitors. Two of the children are buried in ... read more

It's always the case that the camino will re-teach you what you should already know. Sunday's on the Iberian Peninsula are quiet. Very, very quiet. Kel and I left Tomar this morning and walked on quiet roads passing through quiet hamlets. These would have been quiet in the middle of the week, but on Sunday they were positively funereal. We passed the last cafe on the route at 10 and to survive until we arrived at Alvaiazere this afternoon at 3.00 on a bag of crisps, a can of lemon ice tea and some hideous chocolate in bread thing we bought at a service station. Every cafe in town is closed. The only restaurant opening nearby tonight we thought opened at 6.30. It opens at 7.30. We are re-learning patience - and living with hunger. Cheers ... read more

TODAY, OUR FIRST OBJECTIVE WAS TO VISIT THE PEGADAS DOS DINOSSAURIOS (DINOSAUR FOOTPRINTS) PARK. WE HEADED BACK UP THE ROAD WE'D COME IN FROM LISBON, THEN TURNED TOWARDS FATIMA AT MIRA DE AIRE. JUST BEFORE REACHING FATIMA, WE MADE THE TURN EAST TOWARDS THE PARK AND HAD LITTLE TROUBLE FINDING IT. AS BEFORE, BUSINESS WAS PRETTY SLOW AND WE WERE ABOUT THE ONLY TOURISTS THERE. THIS PARK HAS THE MOST EXTENSIVE GROUP OF PETRIFIED DINOSAUR PRINTS IN THE WORLD (FROM WHAT I READ), WITH SEVERAL SPECIES AND NUMEROUS "TRAILS" OF PRINTS. WE PAID OUR ENTRY FEE OF 3 EUROS EACH, AND AFTER A SHORT TREK UP HILL, AND AROUND THE EDGE OF THE "FLATS", WE DESCENDED DOWN TO THE FLATS. APPARENTLY, BACK IN THE DAYS OF DINOSAURS, THIS WAS A SORT OF TIDE POOL THAT THE ... read more

Tomar Our stop for the night and for the next few days was to be the small town of Tomar founded in 1157 by the first grand master of the Order of the Templars Gualdim Pais. Upon entry to the town over the river the first thing that dominates is his castle on the hilltop above the town. The castle was built in the 12th century and also contains the Convento de Christo. We pulled in with trepidation to the municipal campsite right in the middle of the town not knowing what it would be like. Their own website had been poor giving us little factual information. Upon arriving it was like heaven. Reception friendly and helpful giving us maps of the town, pointing out the points of interest – the castle , the numerous churches, ... read more

Yes, this campismo is aberto (open). And this is Gerri back again, taking the blog writing from Lady who seems to think that she's doing all the work on this tour. Not so. In fact, as John Howard once said, "The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine." I do, however, appreciate Lady's being so cooperative as I change gears hundreds of times a day. We began the day climbing (no surprise there) out of Alcobaca in moderate traffic. We spent most of the morning riding through light industrial areas (a lot of brick factories, "ceramicas") and farmland. At a stop in a small town Bill bought a Coke and we munched on our stash of goat cheese, pao (bread), and apples. Many kilometers later we treated ourselves to the ubiquitous ice ... read more
