My Spot:No offense to Sheldon of Big Bang Theory; BUT this is MY SPOT! Many days if warm, I walk down hill 4-5 minutes and hang out in afternoon sun here on the cliffs east end of Albufeira or I go below to the beach area for an hour or two. New AirBnb: See the pics on my new AirBNB next door to the one I had. Nice balcony view! Much smaller place and queen bed in the living room but I can handle that. I have a nice round marble table for my laptop and to hang out with sea view through the sliding glass doors.. Wednesday 11-17 I took a couple hours walk to western Albufeira deep into hilly old town along the beautiful western cliffs and beaches complete with very old buildings, Big ... read more

More than 2 weeks after my arrival, initially as a tourist (Residency Visa in process), I am starting this blog to help track my journey. My goal is to find an area I like well enough to make my home base to live or take other new adventures into Europe and perhaps Morocco. I left Sarasota on October 29, arrived October 30 in Faro the largest city in the Algarve District which is the entire southern coast. A travel note for any future visitors: Faro may be cheaper to fly into than Lisbon plus you either take a bus, train or car which is at least 3 1/2 hours best case plus all the time/$$ to get started. A mini-van shuttle is available (airport to nearest hotel only) for $14 Euros to Albufeira via "Best4U" orange ... read more

From Albufera just a 5 euro bus ticket to Lagos. I left on Friday AM, a trip planned Thursday evening as the landlord informed me Thursday PM there would be no water for 1 day. (maybe 2). There were not many cheap last minute bookings so....In Lagos I stayed at a hostel which was very clean and I had a shared bath that was actually private as there were 5 bathrooms and only 4 people staying. Its off season and town was not crowded at all. The bus terminal was directly across from the marina a key place t visit and only a 10 minute walk through old town to my hostel. Most boat tours of the cliffs and rocky coast and caves were shutting down. I decided not to take a boat tour but reserve ... read more

My friend, Amanda, and I met up in the Algarve in Portugal and climbed for a few days and took in some beach views. A few days later, we headed out to camp and climb in Marbella, Spain. The first night we set up a tent in the wilderness and started hearing loud snorting (as if from a large pig). After a quick Google search in our respective tents, we learned that WILD BOARS were hanging outside of our tents and would only attack if provoked. I'm Jewish, so with an inherent peace treaty, I feel into a deep sleep, but Amanda didn't sleep a wink. The next day, in search of better accommodation (read: less boars), I found a large area near our car that had a healing center. It was a group of people ... read more

It's our last day in Portugal and I'm feeling like I should have planned a few more days here. My first impressions were true and I'd love to explore other parts of the country. But Spain awaits and we packed our bags. Before leaving, we took a boat out of the marina in Lagos to explore the grottos and caves along the shore. It was incredibly beautiful...rock formations and crashing waves. We were the only boat in the area, another advantage of off season travel. It was a motor boat which just fit 9. The pictures don't do it justice but take a look. After docking we walked in to town to go to the slave museum. Lagos is believed to have been the sight of the first slave market in Europe, connected with Prince Henry ... read more

Walking on the beach, looking over tall cliffs onto aqua colored crashing waves, and walking where the early explorers went to school...what more can you ask for in a day? Throw in some fishing boats, a lighthouse or two, and a fortress and that was our day. We started our exploration of the Algarve in Salema, walking on the beach, looking for shells and admiring the colorful cliffs. It felt great to walk barefoot on the sand. Unfortunately it was more overcast than predicted, but I'll take that when it comes with 55-60 degrees. From there we drove to the Fortress of Aljuzar, originally built in the 10th century by Muslims. It was high on a hill, not far from private homes. Only parts of the walls remain but it was a good photo op...truthfully, every ... read more

We checked out of our Lisbon Hotel at 9 and loaded up the bus to head south to the Algarve. We've got a new driver, also named the Portuguese version of John. He also had a different plan to propose for the trip. His plan made sense so we traveled south along the coast for part of the way, made some stops, and eventually took the highway to Lagos, rather than a longer, slower coastal ride to Sagres. Our first stop was in Azeitaio, a small town with 2 wineries. I bought wine at the Jose Maria da Fonseca and wandered a bit. Next stop was a tile studio Azulejos at Azeitaio. We had a demonstration of how the tiles are made and painted...quite amazing. Next stops...a beautiful point overlooking Troia Beach, and a fish and ... read more

This morning, waiting in a sitting room at the train station, a young lady rushes in and says we have to leave the space as it is filling with billowing smoke from the train below us. Nothing like getting gassed first thing in the morning. On the way to Lagos, PORTUGAL, for three hours there are rows of cork trees, many of which have the cork stripped, and the trunk bearing a number, as harvest can only occur every nine years. This is a form of documentation. Finally there are animals; horses and cows in a beautiful white sand colour. The rich soil becomes a burnt orange, and tree branches droop bearing the fruit of large oranges. Estombar is the first retirement settlement along the way, and there are vineyards close by, as well as many ... read more
