Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

26 May Białystok Today we got drenched as went along the main shopping street, Lipowa. Within about 10 minutes the downpour had soaked us to the skin, and we abandoned our search for music shops in Białystok. The music scene is pretty good in Poland incidentally. I came back with plenty of CDs to keep me occupied. Just don’t expect a vast range of CDs on offer in the shops, it is likely that if you want a particular album, you may have to order it. We got my CDs within two days, which was pretty good: the owner knew [View Full Entry]

...I like to Boogie. Nowhere was this more painfully evident than in Warsaw. I know there's more to this confusing (and yet straightforward), welcoming (and yet impossible), modern (and yet hidden beneath layers of unlearnable history), unfathomable (and yet strangely magnetic) town than you'll see here. But a picture tells a thousand words, and besides... most of what I loved about Warsaw I felt. I'll never be able to describe it to you properly. I thrived in Warsaw... I felt it's pull almost immediately. It sang and danced around me, it offered me gllimpses of pre-war Europe and [View Full Entry]

Ten days. Eleven people. Ninety kilometers. Two piping hot banya ruskis complete with birch leaf S&M and alcohol on the rocks! And I don't mean in glasses - that's for sissies. No, alcohol ON the rocks. Of the banya. Zubrovka on the rocks thanks! MAGIC! (Photos coming soon) [View Full Entry]

I've never felt so happy being lonely than I did in Krakow. I found this heartland of Polish religious and cultural significance to be a place that definitely requires some serious digging to get to the good stuff. It's not immediately evident - unless you count the towering Wawel Castle, the picture perfect architecture and rambling alleyways of the old town or the kinda bohemian lo-key atmosphere of Kazimierz. Problem is, it's stuffed full of tourists - all clacking away with their cameras and their high pitched conversations, tripping over each other and their shopping bags, and gett [View Full Entry]

Poland May 2006 Warsaw Back in Poland then, though less of a tour and more of a family visit. Taking advantage of lower fares, we flew from Liverpool to Warsaw. The flight is 2.5 hours, and it is a jolt when you arrive - suddenly everything is in Polish, the weather's warmer, and the street environment is very different to Britain. Cleaner, for a start. Because our flight landed with only an hour before the evening Białystok train left, we decided to stay overnight at Radek's in Warsaw. We got the latest on Polish current affairs. The new government has finally [View Full Entry]

I don't think the stereotypes of Polish people in Chicago hold exactly true to the people in Poland. Polish ladies are all tall, skinny and pretty. So that makes most short, chubby Americans not too happy. But Krakow, however dangerous, is a very cool city. Did the Buddy Network trip to Krakow with the usual suspects. I think there were about 50-60 of us. Apparently we were so loud one night in the hotel, the neighbors (of the hotel) called the police. Crazy! Ok, Krakow is about 8 hours by bus from Vienna. We did some quick city touring, learned some [View Full Entry]

Krakow was the last trip organised by the University this semester and proved to be so popular that about 20 people went independently because they couldn't fit on the bus with us. We were due to leave for Krakow on Friday morning at 5.30am so I had the great idea to stay up all night as I don't like the idea of getting up at 4am in the morning. I was at a bbq at Clara's for a while and then I went with some of her Austrian friends (the people I went on the first ski trip with) to a [View Full Entry]

On the Saturday when I was supposed to have my last Polish lesson, I said hells no, showed up at the school's office to turn in my evaluation form (only for the host family b/c I hadn't received the form for the teachers up to that point), then I used the excuse that I had to leave to go to the train station and so I can't go to class. Whatever. Then I skipped out of there, went across the street, and bought myself one last yummy piece of cake to celebrate! My original plan was to eat it inside the [View Full Entry]
