Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

As it turns out, when you start your birthday by getting eaten by an elevator in Poland, the rest of the day only gets better. Lindsay and I were on our own this morning, and we decided to do all of our last minute gift shopping. First thing, we had to drop our wedding clothes off at the 90 minute pressing place across the street. They will be ready before noon tomorrow. Truth is so much funnier than fiction! Then we set off to shopping, but decided to go to it a different way. I can’t say what exactly it was [View Full Entry]

When I learned Gdansk was on the itinerary, the only person I could think to ask about it was my friend Dan, he responded, “Gdansk, jewel of the Pomorze region of Poland. As with much of Eastern Europe, a crime of geography, putting such a beautiful people in such a precarious place…Further crime that such a people would be burdened by communism for so long.” I find this to be a perfect assessment, if not understated. So far, Poland beats England in every conceivable measure. There are large sections of town that are ugly, large concrete flats and offices built during [View Full Entry]

Hey Everybody!!! First of all, thank you all so much for your messages and words of support and love. It really feels good to know you all are with us. As for a new entry, there is soooooo much to say about our journey in Poland. Too much for tonight, but tomorrow we'll hop on and spill our guts and the whole story. It's going to be a long one...starting with a Polish initiation involving waaaaaaaaaaay to much vodka, and PIGS!! Swinia (svee-nee-uh)... one of the few words we learned and remembered. Stay tuned...we love you all (well, most of you). [View Full Entry]

So on the 20th of June, my uncle Marian took Jeff and I to Czestochowa, where the black Madonna is. I'm not going to lie, we were a little scared to go with him because he doesn't really have the most easily-understandable way of speaking Polish. Nonetheless, we agreed that we'd go with him in his car, and it actually paid off. He knew exactly where to go, from the church itself, to the chapel, the church tower, and the treasury. Jeff and I both agreed that the treasury they had here was a lot better than the one at Wawel. [View Full Entry]

Purple? Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Gdansk
Yet another night of not nearly enough sleep. I’m up at 4.00, packed, showered, dressed and out the door by 5.15. We headed to Luton Airport by cab, the first ride in a car I’ve had since parking in Tallahassee. Security there is tight, we're being herded like cattle through a number of rows for the x-ray and metal detectors. Then we bought champagne for the wedding at the Duty Free, and grabbed some breakfast, two chocolate croissants, the lightest and fastest breakfast I’ve had in England. We walk out on the tarmac and board a large, purple WizzAir (pronounced Weezer, [View Full Entry]

Well well well, it seems I've finally made it to an internet cafe. Not gonna lie, we've been on the go non-stop, so it's good to finally sit down and rest. We just finished up a delicious meal sitting outside in rynek glowny, Krakow's main medieval square - the biggest of its kind in Europe! Delicious grilled pork with mushrooms, peppers, and plums with chrzan, salad, and fries on the side. Helped that down with some piwo w sokiem, a cherry/raspberry flavored beer. So I'm still not totally convinced I'm in Poland, considering how easy it is to walk around a [View Full Entry]

The past three days. Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków
So I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Krakow right now and Jeff and I just finished dinner a little while ago. I even drank a beer, or most of it anyway!! It was piwo z sokiem, or flavored beer, and I had lemon lime. After about four sips, I already felt tipsy and I had to pee like none other, but I tredged on and Jeff only had to drink about the last fifth of it. As far as the past few days, they've been really hectic and tiring, and we haven't got up past 7 in the morning. On [View Full Entry]

Let me first start by saying that I have eaten the BEST PIEROGI I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE in Warsaw. I went to the same place twice during my 3 days in Warsaw. OMG -- delicious! Just like grandma used to make. OK, well, not MY grandma, but SOMEONE'S grandma, I'm sure. Now, I don't have that much experience with traditional Polish food -- especially since I was eating whatever was served to me while I was in Sz...but I know that "traditional" Polish food includes these dumplings, filled with all sorts of yummy stuff. I had the "sampler" [View Full Entry]
