Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Poland and WWII Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Hello everybody, Every country in Europe has their story about WWII. From the neutral--Sweden, to the "try to stay neutral"--Norway and Holland, to the participants--England. No country suffered more devastation than Poland. On September 1, Hitler's army invaded Poland without having declared war. Seventeen days later the Soviet Red Army attacked from the east. The Poles found out much later that a secret agreement was in place between the two countries to split Poland. Water and hydro was cut off. The were bombed everyday for four weeks. The Polish Army was no match for Germany [View Full Entry]

Wierzynek 1364 This is the name of the oldest restaurant in Krakow. It's a really nice looking place on the main square and I would say that the prices are not extremely highend for Poland but rather mid-range Bay Area eating out prices. Here is where the students who had signed up with PROLOG got their free "welcome dinner". Mother and I went there last night for dinner, just to see what it's like, and to be able to say, hey we ate at the oldest restaurant in Krakow! :-p 1364 is supposedly the year when it first began. They [View Full Entry]

there, i said it. i love warsaw. in fact, i like it here so much that we're coming back for 3 nights after gdansk. sorry, toruń... the train ride here was no problem at all, taking only two hours and forty five minutes on the inter-city train. walking up the stairs and out of the station there was warsaw sprawled out before us, with the palace of culture (a "gift" from the soviets) being most prominent. immediately i could tell that it was going to be a hell of a lot different than krakow - cosmopolitan, more fast-paced, trendy, and modern. Hello everybody, There is one big difference about Warsaw. Every other city tour focuses on the age of the buildings. In Warsaw, they point to the buildings and say, "completely destroyed by Nazis and rebuilt." They have done an amazing job of recreating buildings from drawings, paintings and photographs. After the uprising, Hitler personally ordered Warsaw to be levelled. 85% was destroyed, mostly in the middle of Warsaw. The Russian Army watched from the other side of the river as they had through the uprising. The first order of business was clearing the rubble. They found 98,000 d [View Full Entry]

Lindsay came and made sure I was awake at three, bright eyed and bushy-tailed. I mumbled I’d meet her in the lobby in 30 minutes, and I managed to do it too! We bid her father goodbye, and with much thanks, we departed by cab to Gdansk Airport. Traveler’s note: Wizzair is nice and all, but they have a real issue on landings. Don’t get me wrong, they stick them, but maybe a little less gravity, little more flaps, that’s all I’m saying. So after a rather hard landing in Luton, and extricating the seat cushion from my dupa, we collect [View Full Entry]

Thanks to all of you who wrote a reply, I really enjoy reading them. It's hard staying connected; so it helps me feel like a little bit of home is with me - thanks. As some of may quickly notice this blog is lacking in pictures. That's because my camera has recently been liberated from the fetters of my endless picture taking, it was - I can only guess stolen, brilliantly out of my pocket by such an ingenious Krakovian thief that I did not notice. A brief aside: we could not decide what a denizen of Krakow was called, the [View Full Entry]

Went to Zakopane with Mother. 2+ hours to get there. In the winter, Zakopane is supposedly the skiing capital of Poland. I had 2 chances to go to Zakopane with my class. The first chance I passed on because I was totally wiped out from a whole week fo Polish lessons, and just the weekend before I had been on the 20+ bus ride in from Estonia.. Not in the mood to travel far. Then I hear from the folks who had gone that it wasn't exactly enjoyable, more like a forced march up the side of the mountain and then [View Full Entry]

Wedding Day! Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Sopot
I got another good night’s sleep, this is becoming a habit! And to think, it only took me 8 days to get over my jetlag! Ironically, I slept through breakfast at this new, swank hotel, so I venture across the green park, to the symbol everyone in the world knows instantly. The Golden Arches, gleaming under the Sopot sun. Now, I’ve been in a few Mickey D’s, but this was the cleanest, most well organized and well run I have ever seen. It is what other McDonald’s aspire to be. Outside, in the park, is a covered picnic spot to enjoy [View Full Entry]

The whole "w sounding like a v/f" thing throws me off sometimes. I am sitting at an internet cafe in Wroclaw. Not pronounced Rocklaw as you may think...rather it's Vratzlav. Just arrived here this afternoon from Krakow and I need some time to catch up on this before I go and see the town. It's actually a big party/holiday in Poland tonight...the longest night of the year calls for massive celebration in the square and in the park. If I have enough energy this evening, I just might check it out. :) So, I was in Krakow, and I must say [View Full Entry]

Finally a good night’s sleep! Up this morning for my last breakfast at the Mercure Helluvia. It’s a very nice hotel, but I’m over it. I started getting homesick, or maybe just bored, yesterday afternoon. This trip has been amazing, but I know it can’t go on indefinitely. My mind has already wandered home to my cats, my job, my friends, my life. My life? How can I go back to my life? The world is so much bigger, so much grander than before I left Tallahassee. How does someone incorporate all of this into their usual day to day life? [View Full Entry]
