Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

The shock of trying to learn two languages in two days has gotten to me. Polish may be as difficult as German, but the words aren't as long and it sure is more pleasant to the ear. Not to mention that the Polish people are like a different species when it comes to friendliness. Germans just make me nervous, they glare...I wonder if they they know how to smiile. Six hours in second class on the train is not a fun time. You have to get up and walk the corridor occasionally just to keep from cramping up, but we made [View Full Entry]

Well today was pretty intense the amount of people that died at that concentration camp is unreal i dont how that was aloud to happen. We got to see the death wall where everyone was shot and the women had to strip down then were takin to the gas chamber and the men stripped down then were shot right there or takin to the wall. There was about 4000lbs of hair from everyone before they where killed so when they were incenerated it wouldnt smell terrible. This camp was nuts the amount of security they had there was retarted, 2 barb [View Full Entry]

BACK IN THE HABIT Met cousin no. 2, Alex, in Jaroslaw, Poland, who delighted in presenting me with my travel tales to her students like a show and tell. Alex teaches English in a convent/school under the same order of nuns as her sister Jac, but the difference in attitudes of the nuns were profound. Some just live too cloistered a life. Went away for the weekend with some teachers and nuns to a country town called Jemna. No khaki habits, but it didn't stop them from bush bashing and mounting large rocky boulders in very impressive fashion. PRIEST AND NUN [View Full Entry]

After one night in London in the beautiful Soho region, dinner and drinks with friends Gina and Wade i was on an early flight to Lodz, Poland. Birthplace of my grandparents and where i still have many cousins. I got there on the 24th, and was picked up from the brand new Lodz airport. Well here we are for the second day in Gdańsk and its quite a nice place. Reminds me slightly of Provincetown, but not really at all lol Yesterday morning we packed all of our stuff and headed to the trainstation around 11am. We managed to buy tickets for the 11:50 train which was a pretty sweet deal. We couldn't figure out what the ticket said and had no idea where our platform was but we managed to get on board before it left. Stepping into our compartent it smelled like kiełbasa, and there was a family of 4 (one of the [View Full Entry]

its raining right now and theres a bunch of thunder and lightning. All this after it was 90 degrees the whole day. Everyone was sweating and we waited the whole day to go out. A few others just left to go to the school bar, but i decided to finally take a break from going out, my first one since we got here. Saturday was a wild day. We had to wake up early to be at the main square at 9am for a tour of the square and the Wawel Castle. Our professors ended up seeing one of his friends [View Full Entry]

Poland and WWII Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Hello everybody, Every country in Europe has their story about WWII. From the neutral--Sweden, to the "try to stay neutral"--Norway and Holland, to the participants--England. No country suffered more devastation than Poland. On September 1, Hitler's army invaded Poland without having declared war. Seventeen days later the Soviet Red Army attacked from the east. The Poles found out much later that a secret agreement was in place between the two countries to split Poland. Water and hydro was cut off. The were bombed everyday for four weeks. The Polish Army was no match for Germany [View Full Entry]
