Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

We arrived around noon yesterday (Thursday I think) on a plane with propellers. This was our first propeller plane trip ever. Again, a nice man with a Cramer sign greeted us at the airport. It is unbelievable to me that this whole porter thing is actually working. He drove us for about 20 minutes to Hotel Polski located just inside of Florian’s Gate (Gothic Tower built in the 1300’s at the entrance of old town). What a beautiful hotel! It was clear to us immediately that the exchange rate for US Dollars must be quite good. The hotel is very old [View Full Entry]

Two weeks ago, or thereabouts, on a Friday, Joshua and I were enjoying an evening with Don and Deila. At one point, the discussion turned to our planned Auschwitz-Birkenau visit. The four of us engaged in an intellectual dissection of this place, its significance in the annals of history, and its significance to us. Deila asked that upon our visit, or shortly thereafter, that I share my emotional reaction to this rather than my (usual) analytical perspective. So begins the diagnosis of my soul on 09.04.09. The Auschwitz Muzeum at Ocwiecm, Poland is not a museum at all, but a cemetery. [View Full Entry]

Torun, 24-07-2001. Torun surely has charm, a soul reaching touch of clasic admosphere that breaches the charactre of this ancient realm of the Teutonic Knights, small cobble-stoned streets overshadowed by mighty churches which ghotic appaerance makes me feel small and insignificant... A ring of powerfull looking walls surrounding the inner city is testomony of my first visit to this ancient place. A light rain drizzling down on my head while I push my overloaded iron lady through near-empty streets, my sweaty and rained upon head trying to make an owl's turning, trying hard to take [View Full Entry]

Malbork Castle, evening. Now that I know the gipsy story, how they ended up here in the Northern Poland Lake District, waiting for the European Union borders to open up once Poland will join this big European economic powerhouse, keen on their part of the dough, social money free of charge and the respect of outsiders they mostly despise... So now I really like to get the background story of the two dozen or so Africans living on this badly mantained camping in old tents, taking turns on sleeping time and spending most of their time, when they aren't doing odd [View Full Entry]

Malbork Castle
Malbork Castle, 23-07-2001. I slowly walk the cobble-stoned narrow streets of Malbork Town with the looming shade of the Malbork Castle above me, a Teutonic strong-hold of times past and nowadays a prime tourist destination for people the wolrd over - my ears besieged by a multitude of languages...though most of my attention is on Salima, Miss Gipsy Magician's grand daughter who is explaining the Gipsy Plight to me... Salima grew up in a small gipsy community near the Bulgarian/Turkish border where they were the frequent victims of Turrkish speaking Bulgarians who themselves were re [View Full Entry]

An old gipsy witch Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Malbork
Malbork Camping, 22-07-2001. "Wie heissen Sie dann, lieber Herr aus Holland", A strange question for someone who claims to be able to predict one's future by merely looking at your palm. I mean asking for my name just after one quick glance at my hand that after nearly three weeks on the bike has become severely callused...a bit like trying to read a crumpled old newspaper I guess. a parchment-like skin heavenly wrinkled by time and a long life time of living outside, olive colored skin with pink patches and despite the owner's advanced age notwithstanding she has long raven bl [View Full Entry]

We took a train to Krakow. Somehow our seats ended up ın the babychangıng station carriage. We were fortunate that no one came in to change their baby's nappies during the ride! pee-yu! We arrived at Krakow's Glowny Station around 4pm. Glowny station is attached to a huge mall called the Galleria. We found a Carrefour grocery store in the mall and bought some groceries for the next day's breakfast in case our camp ground was ın the middle of nowhere. After visiting the tourist office in Glowny, we fıgured out how to get to the campground on a cıty bus. [View Full Entry]

We left Prague on Tuesday morning and rode a train for 9 hours to Poznan, connecting through Berlin. The main train station in Berlin where we transferred is ENORMOUS, like a small city - super crowded with all sorts of restaurants and shops. Nine hours is a LONG time to be on a train, especially when worn out. We weren’t able to both doze off for a nap, as we’ve heard a few horror stories from fellow travelers that it’s best for at least one person in a group to stay awake on the train to make sure nobody steals anything [View Full Entry]

We travelled to Łódź because we wanted to see a smaller city in Poland. I also couldn't miss Łódź because it is David Lynch's favorite city, there is an active modern art scene, strong film roots, a Hollywood style walk of fame, old looming textile factories and so much more. I also will say that Łódź has the most helpful tourist office on our trip so far. We loved it! We also learned about this Łódź native.
