Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Chris: Big move. Got up early and went to Alexander Platz to get a replacement for the late lamented camera that was lost on the first day of the trip. Bought the camera, at a bargain 179 Euros cash. This is because in Germanys, even the largest chains refuse to accept credit cards... bizzare! Imagine turning up to buy an Apple product - with 2 grand cash! So after purchasing the wonder camera we headed back to buy surprisingly inexpensive train tickets to Poznan in Poland. The trip from germany to Poland was interesting. We sat in a 6 seater cabin [View Full Entry]

Burley - Hull - Zeebrugge - Belgium We were on the slow way to Poland taking the overnight ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge. It was good to chill out on the boat. Next day we got the bus link to Bruges and had breakfast at the station. Our train was signed on the platform, so we hurried on the train, and then I noticed the train went seemingly two minutes early. My suspicions gave way to dismay when a ship appeared on the horizon and we were back on the coast at Ostend! Oops - wrong train! We set off [View Full Entry]

Spent the day in the park... finally something I understand, trees.
Driving through Germany was an adventure; though we just drove on the same road clear across to Poland as fast as we could as we were running late due to our morning misadventure. As residents of countries where the national speed limits rarely exceed 70 miles per hour, Della and I could not resist experiencing the thrill of no limits for ourselves. Now, mind you, we were driving a vehicle that is at least 12 years old, which cost no more that 350 pounds, so the speed was less the thrill than simply seeing how fast her old car could go. From Prague I got an overnight bus to Warsaw, which took an hour and a half longer than expected, due to a large number of stops and some mysterious bus problems which required us to change buses at 3 o'clock in the morning. I'm pretty sure the second bus had bigger problems that the first. All very interesting when you can't speak a word of Polish! I have since picked up a few words, but it hasn't helped it much. Polish people seem very unhelpful, to the point of being quite rude if you don't speak any Polish. Except for people [View Full Entry]

So off we set on our 19 hour bus journey to Krakow. It actually went surprisingly well. I think we had tired ourselves out after Amsterdam that we slept pretty well through the night and the next morning. We got to Krakow around 4pm, somehow managed to find our way out of the bus station and to the hostel we had booked (didn't have any luck finding couchsurfers for krakow) It was called Oasis Hostel, I had persuaded Ste to book this one as it was only 3 pound a night, whereas all the others were around 5/6 pound. It turned [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! I've decided that the easiest way for me to share with all of you my Polish experiences would be to create a travel blog, like this one, where I can post my stories and pictures. My last trip to Poland I was just sending out huge, massive emails and I was sometimes getting them sent back to me in my inbox. So, I figured this way I can send out the link to my travel blog and you can check in whenever you'd like. The plus side to doing it this way is that I can also attach pictures [View Full Entry]

I will likely go on a 6 hour guided walking tour tomorrow for the essential Berlin - it is only 10 Euro so sounds a bargain relatively. With my [View Full Entry]

Hello Family and Friends! Sorry about the delay, turns out the times when I have internet I don't have the patience to sit down long enough to do anything productive! Today I write to you from Kracow, Poland after an eight hour drive (which should have been three) from Warsaw, Poland. In the past few days I have been in six different countries, which is simply amazing as I have only really driven the distance from Colorado to say... Tennessee maybe? Don't really know, but the point is, the scale here just seems so... unusual. Having a blast though, plan to [View Full Entry]

We went to Legnica, Wrocław and Kraków. 3rd September, 2009. We went to Legnica, part of Dolnoslaskie. This city is my husband home town and it takes about 1hour from Wrocław by car. 5th September, 2009. I tried to make polish traditional food 'Pierogi' with my husband family. Even though I have eaten pierogi quite often in Poland and Englnad but I have never made it myself! It was my fantastic experience :) [View Full Entry]
