Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Good Morning! Again, I'm sorry for the long delay between entries - this week has been a bit crazy over here. On Monday I left Lublin with my friend Ola and her husband Michał to go to Warsaw. We arrived at my building where I will be living for the next two semesters, dropped my things off, and headed to the University to try and figure out what I need to do to sign up for classes. (Yes, school technically starts TODAY but I am still not registered for classes. I am lucky enough to be a part of the faculty [View Full Entry]

POLSKA 004
back in Lublin
in the Old Town, Lublin

We woke up this morning around 6:30, got ready, ate breakfast, and walked to the train station. The boys had their backpacking backpacks.. Looking like the real deal! We got to the station about 20 minutes before the train left, bought our tickets and boarded the train. It was a four hour train ride to Krakow.. We slept most of the way but talked a little bit. Tomek told me that it really shouldnt take 4 hours to get to Krakow, but the tracks are in such bad condition in Poland that it slows the journey. He said that this is [View Full Entry]

Looking down the flights of stairs.
I had heard from a friend of my Moms of a place in Poland that was an underground cave carved from salt and embellished in salt. When our plans changed in Warsaw from travelling as far south as Italy, we choose to explore Poland a little bit more, including this underground mine just south of Krakow in the town of Wieliczka. The mine itself, though interesting, was really not all that impressive to a girl that has seen some of the amazing caves in Colorado and Texas. The tour was rubbish, and really not worth the money we paid to get [View Full Entry]

Dear Grandpa, I visited Auschwitz and Birkenau, and I learned something about you. Or rather, I learned something about humanity. I learned that men are brave, and it is the brave ones who matter. I learned that men are humane, and it is the humane ones that matter. I learned that good CAN overcome evil, and that it is the good in man that truly matters. I learned that you are the greatest man that ever lived, that you are humane, you are brave, you are a hero. It is you who is the beauty in this world. Sometimes it is [View Full Entry]

So I am sure most of you know that for the past two summers I've worked in the Outer Banks, NC at the beach.. A lot of Eastern and Central Europeans go there for work during the touristy season to make money, go to the States, and travel.. So I met a lot of Russians and Polish kids which has been a lot of fun! We take turns having parties, they cook polish/russian food for us, they make us drink their vodka, etc.. So now I am lucky to have friends in Poland and Russia! So, Tomek picked me up at [View Full Entry]

Travelling with Graham and Lynnie, friends we had met travelling in South America, we made a 3am start to the glorious Stansted. The early morning paid dividends when we arrived at Krakow airport and were greeted with glorious sunshine - yippee! We made our way to our hostel - Elephant on the Moon - which was situated on the outskirts of Krakow town centre. It was more like a B&B with spotless rooms and a gargantuous breakfast awaiting our arrival, complete with tinned Spam and various Polish processed food delicacies which the brave amongst us tried. Not to waste any time, [View Full Entry]

Dzień Dobry :) Hope everyone is doing well! So, as I mentioned in the last travel blog, yesterday we went to Ola's Mom's house for dinner. As we were in the car on the way over (it wasn't a long ride at all....5 minutes tops) Ola turns around and says to me "Gotowy jesteś na przesłuchanie, Mikołaju?" (Are you ready for the interrogation?) So I look all confused and I ask "Interrogation of what?" She tells me "Well, my mom is interested to get to meet you - I'm almost certain she's going to ask you a whole bunch of questions." [View Full Entry]

Every day after our first class we headed here to have our morning coffee and cake.
Chris: An 8am start again, tempered with the thought of coffee when we get to the school, and the longer coffee break after the first class. First of all we chatted with two kids, very good english from both of them, played the usual game... drawing numbers from the hat of doom. We have a numbers printed out from 1-32 on pieces of folded up paper. Each number then corresponds to a particular question on a sheet. Questions like, describe your best friend, name your favourite 3 things you like about your town, and describe a country you dislike and why [View Full Entry]

Made it! Europe » Poland » Lublin Province » Lublin
Hey everyone! I'm sorry for the delay in travel blog posts - I'm currently visiting with friends in Lublin (a city which is about 3 hours south-east of Warsaw by car) so my laptop doesn't have access to the internet here. So my flight over went really well aside from the fact that it was supposed to leave at 5:30pm and didn't end up taking off until around 7:45pm or something crazy like that. I finally arrived in Warsaw at about 11:45am local time. So, after getting off the plane of course I had to walk in what seemed like one [View Full Entry]

Driving in Poland is one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever had, scratch that. Driving in Europe is one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever had, though Poland was much worse than the more western areas. To pass in this country all one has to do is pull over the middle line and the rule is both the oncoming traffic and the car you are overtaking are to pull over on to the side of the road in essence creating a third lane for the car who feels it necessary to overtake. The first time Della decided [View Full Entry]
