Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

So what has happened to me on this trip? Meeting all these really young people travelling across Europe by train and bus the way I used to do when I was their age. Now that was a strange experience. I mean they are all so young, just like me then! Hooking up and getting involved. Pairing!!! Most of them will probably never get as far as I did. I presume they'll get offspring and settle down, not going through all that extra-european sh*t I eventually had to get through, I did very consciously chose for that though...The Crazy African Years, the [View Full Entry]

Cold feet in Krakow Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Krakow, 27-11-2007. Only four hours in Krakow can hardly be enough to see the whole place. Still I made the city of Krakow a daytrip today. Two and a half hours by train arriving at noon and having the return train to Warsaw at 16.00 h. Krakow is covered by a white blanket of snow and more snow coming down even now while having a cup of java at the local McDonald's. The snow comes through my already totally worn out shoes and chills my feet. What can I do? I really wanted to see Krakow before this trip is over, [View Full Entry]

Gorlice,Poland Europe » Poland » Subcarpathian » Jaslo
Gorlice is near Jaslo. I drove through many towns on the bus heading towards the Ukraine, and one town was Jaslo. The choices of towns on this blog site is limited. Gorlice is situated near Slovakian border, in the high hills of southern Poland. I spent two days here and learned alot about displaced Ukrainians after the uprising in 1949. The Ukrainians wanted their own state, and when their uprising was over, they were sent to northern Poland. Many of their Greek Orthodox churches were converted to Roman Catholic. Eventually some Ukranians came back, and now live peacefully with Polish p [View Full Entry]

Only a couple of minutes waiting in the special Hitch-hiker spot at Vilnius and we got a ride. We were happy. Our destiny was showing it's bright side. It wasn't until afternoon it started to show it's dark side. The couple in the car took us a few kilometers ahead and dropped us off, a few minutes latter they passed again by the same spot and decided to take us further. We were advancing very quickly and were amazed with our luck. We were dropped off in the main highway to Poland, it couldn't be a better place. The excitement of [View Full Entry]

Warsaw, 26-11-2007. There is a happy hour downstairs in the bar of my hostel, 7 Zloti for 2 big pints but draught beer always gives me a headache the next morning. Still headache or not, I'll be back there tonight because the bar maid is blond and looks great, always a good attribute when you are female and work in a bar!!! The weather today is shit with heavy snow so small wonder that all the streetsellers in the hystoric old city that were so abundant yesterday, were nowhere to be seen today. One of the questions in the Callan book I teach out of asks the students "Are there any castles in the town where you live?" The students ALWAYS answer no. Oh, really? I think these pictures tell a different story... And the much anticipated pictures of my castle - I live on the 3rd floor of a 5-floor block of flats. I live right off the Rynek, behind the Diesel store. Most of the tenants in my building are university students (or old ladies with annoying dogs whose barks echo around the building at 7 am, AWESOME). My flat is a [View Full Entry]

When you get to Auschwitz head to the museum. Birkenau is 2 km later in the west. The city around the museum and Birkenau show no signs of the past at all, supermarkets, advertisements of cosmetics, models and so on. But you can't erase the past.. Krakow - Warszawa  Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
After Auschwitz we arrived in Krakow by night. After having some food in a restaurant that was supposed to be Georgian (but it wasn't really), we walked around Krakow and got a hotel on the highway between Krakow and Warszawa. It was cheap and it had a cool bar with lots of polish beer. Next day we went to Warszawa by car.. Huge traffic, reminds me a lot of Moscow, just without the special charm of Moscow. Huge, dirty streets, people hurrying somewhere, leninistic buildings like the Palace of Culture and Science. Krakw wasn't too impressing but small and neat but [View Full Entry]
