Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

This is a shot from out of the train window whilst travelling thought Poland.
Today I was mainly just travelling, First I was on the train from Koln to Warsaw…I had a cabin with six beds 3 up each wall and was sharing with 3 other people no one talked to each other on this train although 2 polish drunks did try to sleep in the spare beds although the guards got rid of them when they could not show a ticket. Sadly this train was going much slower than it should have been and as a result it did not arrive until around 15:15 it was scheduled to arrive at 10:40. This of course [View Full Entry]

Poland

Our stay in Krakow can be summed up as dumpling eating occasionally interrupted by walking and looking. The dumplings weren't particularly tasty, or healthy, but they grew on us, especially those stuffed with cabbage and mushroom. Our first day was our usual trek around the city. We spent all day walking to the castle and down to the Jewish quarter. After some hunting around for a place to eat lunch we found a small smoke filled room and settled down for lunch. Our first courses were traditional soups, then we had crepes, mine with chicken curry and Alice's with apples and [View Full Entry]

Main thing for me when thinking about Poland is the events of the World War and trying to find out what happened here and get the local point of view who are still very keen to tell there stories passed down from Parents, Grandparents or there own tales. I got some very got insight with what happened there whilst staying with some very nice people in Warsaw and Krakow. First I was in Warsaw where the whole city was completly destroyed 85% but they have managed to rebuild the old town to exactly the way it was before the war started. [View Full Entry]

Hunting for Gnomes
Hunting for Gnomes
Street lighting helps me to see their siloettes. This one was in front of a large church.
Today is my last day in Poland. It rained alot and a penetrating cold mist filled the air; feels like November. I enjoyed the day, hunting gnomes and doing the last organization for flight tomorrow. I bought a scarf to keep warm while I wandered the streets. Time has gone back an hour and darkness seems to begin at four. Perhaps it is even more fun to hunt gnomes in the dark. ha ha Before my camera battery gives out, with all of the flash needed to capture these gnomes, I'll upload what I have. It occurred to me that I [View Full Entry]

Warsaw One More Time Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Got flight out of Odessa and returned to Warsaw. Have to admit, it was a relief going to a city that I was familiar with, and better infrastructure. The next day I took the train to Wroclaw (pronounced 'Fro-Sauve'....what IS it with stupid letters in English that give no indication as to how Polish people pronounce the name??....really tricky when trying to ask for a train ticket to this place...ha ha) I had a few hours before the train and decided to visit the Museum of Evolution. Never did find it, but I bought a ticket and found myself in an [View Full Entry]

Gnomes
Gnomes
On the way towards the main square, look up and down and seek those gnomes.
Wroclaw, home of 'the Red Baron' and lately over fifty gnomes are waiting for you to find them. This is my last stop in Poland. I'm in the German part of Poland and very few people speak English here. In fact, the international ticket agent at train station didn't speak English. Luckily a young customer understood that I was looking for day passes for trams and pointed me in direction of kiosks outside the building. I'm in a hostel with no washing machines, despite the fact that hostel-bookers advertised it as having free laundry. I couldn't get refund to move to [View Full Entry]

Varszava Centralna. Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Warsaw, 29-11-2007. Like any other big railway station the world over, Varszava Centralna is a gathering place for alcoholics and the homeless, the rejects of society. Plastic bags from local supermarkets serve these people well for carrying their belongings. The foul body smells mixed with the odours of unwashed clothes would have made me puke only a few weeks ago. However, all the endless city walks I've been keeping myself busy with these last three weeks have greatly improved my health. I have no doubt that after a couple of good nights of sleep in my own bed back home, will [View Full Entry]

Going home soon. Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Warsaw, 28-11-2007. Tomorrow'll be leaving time, my day of departure. Back to my beloved Amsterdam. Back to the Gang of Evil Brothers, oh I know for sure that those crazy sh*ts haven't forgotten me, they were even on my mobile with all their shit and more......Still, that is part of my excistence!!! But the trip was GREAT!!! Doing new things, seeing new places and all that. I managed to kick once again Miss Sh*tty Mary Jane but not King Alcohol, the booze. But then the booze never really bothered me. That part of my life I can handle. It is the [View Full Entry]

So what has happened to me on this trip? Meeting all these really young people travelling across Europe by train and bus the way I used to do when I was their age. Now that was a strange experience. I mean they are all so young, just like me then! Hooking up and getting involved. Pairing!!! Most of them will probably never get as far as I did. I presume they'll get offspring and settle down, not going through all that extra-european sh*t I eventually had to get through, I did very consciously chose for that though...The Crazy African Years, the [View Full Entry]

Arbeit Macht Frei
Arbeit Macht Frei
The infamous "Work brings freedom" from Hitler's concentration camps.
Only a couple of minutes waiting in the special Hitch-hiker spot at Vilnius and we got a ride. We were happy. Our destiny was showing it's bright side. It wasn't until afternoon it started to show it's dark side. The couple in the car took us a few kilometers ahead and dropped us off, a few minutes latter they passed again by the same spot and decided to take us further. We were advancing very quickly and were amazed with our luck. We were dropped off in the main highway to Poland, it couldn't be a better place. The excitement of [View Full Entry]
