Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Wroclaw Christmas Tree
Wroclaw Christmas Tree
Chelsea and Marika in front of the tree
Merry Christmas from Poland! On Wednesday, Dec. 24th, I took the train from Wroclaw to Kostrzyn Nad Odra to meet Rick and Jakub, 2 of Bri's college friends. Jakub is Polish (went to high school and college in the US, now works in DC) and his family still lives in Poland. Jakub's family was very welcoming and I enjoyed my few days in their home. The train was quite full on the journey to Kostrzyn - I had to stand next to the door (cold!) for the first half of the 5 hour trip - but I got a seat after [View Full Entry]

Santa visits

On December 6th we just happened to be walking back from supper, when we heard music coming from the "little market". It was the arrival of St. Nicolaus. Tonite is the night that he will slip a present under the pillows of the children. The square was jammed packed with families waiting the arrival of the saintly bishop. A popular childrens show was performing from one of the balconies overlooking the street. And when his carraige was spotted, I was caught up in the crush of people to be closer to him. The Christmas Angel led him through the crowd, he [View Full Entry]

God Bless the USA.
Tis the season for some parties and snowy getaways. I attended my first Polish birthday party early in the month. Michal (Mee-how) turned 23 and hosted a great party. For a Polish birthday, the bday boy/girl is responsible for paying for everyone else's drinks at a bar. They also supply snacks and are to ensure all guests have a lovely time. So I announced that I would NOT be hosting a Polish birthday party. No way am I buying drinks for everyone else on my birthday. Poor Michal was stressed making sure everyone was having fun on HIS birthday. The Speed [View Full Entry]

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving! I spent my Thanksgiving day at work... but I did enjoy some cheese pierogi and gelato in honor of the day. It has gotten cold in Poland - We've had a few snowfalls, but nothing sticks. The sun sets at about 4 pm, which isn't exactly uplifting. The aerial pictures of Wroclaw were taken from the top of a church bell tower on a very windy Polish Independence day (Nov. 11). Happy 90th, Poland! As it turns out, my grandmother, Dorothy "Mamaw" Trotter, is a few months older than Poland itself. Of course the Poles have been around [View Full Entry]

YES! ALIVE! And we only caused one car crash! (But our involvement in that is debatable, at that.) So I think I sort of know how to pronounce Szczecin now - Shteh'-shin? Something like that? Ahaha. So we cabbed to London Stansted at 2am on Friday morning, in order to catch our 6am flight to Poland! One of the first things we did was try to find the hostel. But they gave us faulty directions, which led us all the way to the southwest of the city, near the forest's edge! But thankfully these really nice people at a medical supplies [View Full Entry]

A Polish Wedding Europe » Poland
A Polish Wedding Once enough vodka had been given, the groom was allowed to enter the bride’s house. Later a tractor was parked on the road preventing the couple from getting to the church, the removal of which was negotiated by more ‘vodka payments’. Been invited to share Quim and Iwona’s wedding in Kielce was such a unique way to experience Polish culture and enjoy copious amounts of vodka. Similar to other European cultures it is tradition to get married in the hometown of the bride, to have the ceremony in the church and party for days. [View Full Entry]

Narina, Nadine and Marshall (not pictured) made the trek to spend Halloween with me. A fun weekend had by all.
Due to harassment from someone who will remain nameless (Bri Keeney), here is the much anticipated Polish Halloween/election installment of my travel blog. To answer a few questions: NO, the Poles don't celebrate Halloween. The Poles celebrate All Saints' Day on Nov. 1. The vast majority of Poles spend the day with family traveling to the cemeteries where relatives are buried. This also meant that all the stores and restaurants were closed all weekend, which would have been handy to know beforehand. NO, I didn't bring a costume with me to Poland so I didn't have one to wear on Hall [View Full Entry]
