Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

So after we boarded our overnight train we settled into our sleeper cabin - which consisted of 3 bunk beds. We had our fingers crossed that we wouldn't have to share a room with anyone else but unfortunately another woman turned up...and I wouldn't usually say unfortunately but this woman proved to be the source of no sleep for us both. Her ticket placed her in the middle bunk and I have honestly never heard someone snore like she did before, it was like she was trying to exorcise a devil! Jaimee and I were shouting at eachother over her excessive [View Full Entry]

We woke up with the alarm at 3 am. Not unusual for us. Keith always books the early flights. And he likes to be at the terminal early, no last minute arrivals for him. We had a 5:30 am plane to catch. We are headed to Prague. "The most beautiful city in Europe!" Or so we've been told. Looking out of the window while I ate my breakfast, I thought to myself, "it's mighty foggy outside" You all are smart, and now know where this blog is going. no where....Just like us. We arrive at the airport. The 5:30 am flight [View Full Entry]

This past weekend, we took the train up to Warsaw. We feel obliged to make a visit, being that we are temporary Polish. And this is Poland's capital for the past 400 years. It was first in Krakow. At the top of this entry is a photo of the Jewish Cemetery, it was the only deserted place we were in during the time in Warsaw. This is a very alive, busy city. We were impressed by the size of this cemetery, with the snow highlighting the tops of the grave stones, it seemed to go on indefinately into the woods. [View Full Entry]

In the Krakow Rynek
After hanging in Kostrzyn, I came home to Wroclaw for a few days before taking the train to Krakow. Narina and Marshall hopped on the train as it passed through Gliwice and the three of us headed to the former Polish capital. Krakow was painfully cold for the 3 days we were there, but we still managed to see the sights and have some fun. Sadly, my camera battery died so I didn't take as many pictures as I hoped. Narina and I decided to get our first Polish haircuts in Krakow. After finding a proper frzjer (salon), the hair was [View Full Entry]

Braving the Cold - My Walk Mario was sick for about 5 days, so we stayed in a lot, that was fine by me as the heating was great, outside was mostly dull and it was totally dark by 4:30pm. However, one of those days was beautiful and clear, so I went for a walk outside, took my camera and... Mario and I somehow spent almost 24 hours getting to Poland even though our actual flight was only 2 and a half hours! Three busses, one plane and one car ride later, we arrived at Mario's parents house! The main Christmas celebration in Poland is on Christmas eve and usually involves a feast of 12 dishes. Even though I think the drinks were included in the 12 dishes, I was full halfway through!! Maybe I should have followed in Mariusz's (Mario's brother-in-law) footsteps and starved myself from 6am! He just kept eating and eating! Haha! At the beginning we each had [View Full Entry]

01/01/2009 Oscypki and the Broken Shoe We had a quiet new years eve so we could be up early on New Year’s Day to drive to Zakopane in the Polish Tatra mountain area. *Note to self - if you want to drive anywhere without traffic, do it on the morning of the first day of the year! Barely a sole on the road made our drive very easy on the way up, coming back was a different story… The closer we got to Zakopane, the more snow on the side of the road. As we were driving we saw a 22° [View Full Entry]

White Christmas in Poland Europe » Poland
Upon arrival in Warsaw, I immediately noticed that the weather was markedly cooler than in Belgium, therefore raising my hopes of experiencing a white Christmas for the first time in my life. For our first full day in the Polish capital, we decided to visit the museum of the Warsaw Uprising which took place during the latter part of WWII. This was an excellent museum and I left there with an awareness of the spirit of the Polish people of which I was previously unaware. Despite their woefully outnumbered underground army, the people of Warsaw fought bravely in an effort to [View Full Entry]
