Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Ah, this weekend was Poland, one of my top places to visit. Poland was great, even though it seemed like it ended with everything that could possibly go wrong, going wrong. But, let me start by telling you the good part of the trip. The trip started out fairly smoothly. We got up super early on Friday morning (nothing out of the ordinary here), caught our train to Milan, made it to the airport, and got on our plane. It was hard to find a cheap flight to Poland and after asking a friend how they flew to Poland when they [View Full Entry]

Where do I begin? John is going to cut and paste this for me as we do not have an internet connection where we are staying. Hopefully, this will be corrected. If not, we will figure it out. Since I do not have the previous blog, I may be repeating myself. So, please be patient with me. Kate stayed with us until Thursday evening when she returned to Ireland for her final leg of vacation. It was very exciting over there as the Irish Rugby team was up for their championship game against Wales in the Six Nations Tournament and they [View Full Entry]

Katedra
Katedra
It is an amazing Gothic building and during the night it looks even more impressive, I think.
Short facts: Participants: Me and my mentor Katarzyna Destination: Poznan, Poland Length of the trip: 3days Distance: 275 km from Warsaw to Poznan Music: Queen Adreena, Nirvana and silence Reading: National Geographic and Pravda Day 1 I came to Poznan about 10 pm and my hostess from couchsurfing met me in train station. She lives not far from Katedra so the first small sightseeing was on a way home, I think churches look even better at night. First evening I spent at her place drinking tea and getting to know each other. The next morning I was not in a hurry, [View Full Entry]

"One more time, how do you say Pleased to meet you?" I asked Michał as we got off the plane and walked across the wet runway in Gdansk. I wanted to make a good first impression on his Mum. Plus, she didn't speak English anyway, so I figured I should make the effort. Michał gave me a disappointed look I was quite familiar with. I'd last seen it a few hours before when I told him I'd dropped my boarding pass on the way to the airport. 'Miło mi Panią poznać' he responded, wearily. You think that looks hard to pronounce?? Poland will be our final destination for our motorbike tour this summer. But today was another step in the planning stages. Purchased Adventure Motorcycling Handbook by Chris Scott Worldwide Motorcycling Route & Planning Guide or so the blurb on the front cover says. Hopefully we will find some helpful hints in there. Hello Krakow! Arriving on the 12/03/09 at approximately 3:00pm we hopped off the train and walked into the station supermarket. There we bought our dinner and some beer :) I had appointed myself leader of Krakow and lead us to the hostel, which was only 30 minutes walk from the station. We arrived just before 4:00pm. The walk took us through the heart of the old town past St. Mary's cathedral. The old town is really stunning and full of activity from youths on bikes, to street performers trying to make a living, and lone travelers busking for the next leg [View Full Entry]

Hi there! Day 1 Our stay at Warsaw was not as cool as Riga. We arrived after a 13 hour coach journey at a station that looked like it could have been in the middle of nowhere. We had 0 money and a vague idea of how to find our hostel. We walked around for about 5 minutes before returning to the coach whose passengers were still on a lung killing break and asked where an atm was. The driver basically said 'no way' and the crew members offered a swap of Euros for Zloty (Polish currency). We accepted and thanked [View Full Entry]

Short facts: Distance - 400km from Warsaw to Zakopane Length - around 4 days Music - Death Note soundtrack and Chinese audio lessons I was considering for quite long either to go to Zakopane with Erasmus people or not. Main concern was what will I do there if I don't like skiing and trekking was not possible because of the snowfall. But eventually I decided to go. Me and other 3 people were late to have places in the bus, but we had places in hostel so all we needed is to get there by train. Which made me happy as [View Full Entry]
