Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

We had a wonderful first time trip to Krakow, Poland to visit Basia and Jack as part of our April school holidays. Basia was our nanny for many years when Dominic was born. Now Basia and Jack have two sons of their own, have moved back to their hometown of Krakow, and Jack built their own home adjacent to Basia's parents. Krakow is a beautiful historic city all the more brought alive by Basia and Jack's warm hospitality and pride in their country, city, and history. Highlights were a carriage ride around the Old Town, wonderful food, a pet turtle, and [View Full Entry]

Entry to Auschwitz 1
The Slogan at the front of Auschwitz "Work hard and you'll be free". More Nazi lies basically.
Oswiecim is a name not many people know, but it is the actual name of the place where the infamous nazi death camps, Auschwitz, Monowitz and Birkenau are located. It started as a POW camp in April 1940, but due to its location and other reasons, it evovled with the assistance of nazi efficiency to murder, slaughter, kill, exterminate jewish people and other people viewed as undesirable. Between all three camps between 1.1 million people and 2 million people were subjected to hard labour, starvation and then the gas chambers to solve what hitler called "the answer to the jewish problem [View Full Entry]

Happy Birthday to Me!
Happy Birthday to Me!
I am 24 and have a mouth full of cake.
Decided I'd go ahead and turn 24 this year. I had a wonderful birthday week with lots of emails from friends and family, special outings with friends here in Poland and a great birthday party at a local pub, Salvador, on Saturday. A birthday to remember. (And no, I didn't follow the Polish tradition of buying everyone else drinks on MY birthday. I supplied the cake and awesome dance moves, which was worth more than any amount of booze.) [View Full Entry]

Today was a slow start due to a few beers the night before. Eventually decided to get out of bed and head out into the day. The weather was pristine! Just absolutely gorgoues. Had a quick walk around the castle, took a few photos next to the statue of Pope John Paul, and then after two hours decide it was time for a nap by the river. 2hrs later hit beer oclock and strolled back to the main square to have a few beers in the cafe we were at the previous day. Service was still Shite! but the beer was [View Full Entry]

April 4, 2009 We had our last day in Lithuania. During John’s final class, the students were most insistent on our seeing more of Lithuania. On Friday, we traveled to Trakai to see the Trakai Castle Island. It is exactly as the name decrees. It was built during the 13th century and has the requisite towers and moots. It is situated in the middle of a lake that is presently frozen much to the consternation of the many beautiful white swans who are walking on the ice. The castle has been invaded many times going back to the Crusaders. It met [View Full Entry]

We some how made the train at 11.15 from Warsaw to Krakow - God knows how maybe thanks to Jurian's diligence cause at this point in my travels laziness is starting to kick in. No deadlines, no due dates, no phone calls - except to check in with the olds everyone once in while - but after the passport joke they had had enough of me for a while. 4 hours was the train journey - Rhian and Alex nearly didn't make it, but with 10 mins to go who should come tripping down the escalator with her snowplough on tiny [View Full Entry]

Warsaw day 2. Hey guys .... continuing on from the awesome card game, the next day we head to the Warsaw Uprising museum. This museum is a must see for any one who comes to Warsaw or anyone who has an interest in WWII. The Museum takes you from onset of WWII with Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland on the 1st of September 1939. From which the Allies declared war on Germany. On the 2nd of September Russia invaded from the East and basically split Poland in two. Germany and Russian had got together several months earlier to agree on the [View Full Entry]

Warsaw - Day 1 Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Well... i was right about one thing... it was the bus ride from hell. Russians yelling, bus had more stops then a datsun with unleaded in it, crappy seats and no sleep. Arriving in Warsaw at the friendly time of about 5.15am. No money (atms did not like my card for some reason, deutesch bank must be after that money from 2004 still), no ones speaks english and I seem to lose the ability to navigate through the night. But its April fools days so here goes nothing. Catch a train to the centre of Warsaw and walk for 20 mins [View Full Entry]
