Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

These are carved out of salt and stone.
Today we went to the Wieclezka Salt Mine. It was about a 20 minute bus trip to get there from Krakow. The mine was set up over 700 years ago. Profits from the mine helped fund a lot of the building projects for a long time. Today only about 50lbs of salt is extracted from the mine each day. That is because some brine (liquid with high concentration of salt) seaps into the mine and they collect the brine and extract the salt from it so that the mine does not flood. We went down about 380 steps to the first [View Full Entry]

Oldest Synagogue in Krakow
Yesterday May 15th, we visited the Jewish Quarter in Krakow. This was very cool. We had a tour of the oldest synagogue in all of Poland! (see picture) This was my first time in a synagogue too. We were not allowed to take pictures once we were inside. This synagogue is not active--but is actually a museum. They had many relics here that were used in the practice of Judaism. Something interesting that I learned is that women sit separately from men during a service. In this synagogue there was a separate women's room, but I believe in some synagogues [View Full Entry]

Auschwitz Europe » Poland
Today was a very rough day. We had our tour of Auschwitz. We went to the original camp at Auschwitz and then Auschwitz-Birkenau. It was about an hour bus ride to get there from Krakow. The camps have been made into memorials and museums, so they are heavily visited. There were many people there. We had our own tour guide to take us around. The tour guide has a microphone and they give you a headset so that you can actually hear what he is saying. This is important in a large group and also because there are a ton of [View Full Entry]

Hello all. I finally found an internet cafe in Krakow. I am making a post for yesterday May 14th. We arrived in Krakow safely yesterday and took a bus to our hotel. The hotel is in a great location! It is within walking distance to many places in Krakow. We ate lunch at the hotel--fish, potatoes, and a mix of cabbage and carrots (see picture). It was good...even though I'm not a big fish eater, I still ate it. I've learned on this trip that you drink water when you can find it, use the bathroom when its there, and [View Full Entry]

Warsaw Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Day 12-13 (May 14-15) A really long travel day was next, leaving at 8.15 and arriving after 8pm in Warsaw, travelling on 3 trains. With such a late arrival we didn’t venture far (next door) for a late dinner of Lebanese food. Not really a Polish meal, but delicious all the same. The next morning we walked across the bridge over the Vistula River, which was undergoing repairs and reinstalling the tram lines. We navigated across eventually, and saw the first escalators that had been brought to the area and a display showing how people greeted the event. Then it was [View Full Entry]

Warsaw
Warsaw

Warsaw is my third Ibis hotel on this trip. Rooms are so identical that if you don t look outside you have no idea if you are in Krakow or Madrid. Walked through Warsaw about all day. Public transport are mostly busses since the Russians decided in the 60th that this was a good system to deliver more of their oil. 1600 busses with about 170 routes totalling over 2.500 km. Tramsystem delevoped again right after the war has stop developing at 800 tramcars and 240 km tracks. You see very old and very new tramcars in the streets. In recent [View Full Entry]

It is not down in any map; true places never are. ~Herman Melville May 7, 2009, Thursday, Bialowieza NP to Gizycko, Poland’s Lake District, P.T.H. Camping “Borowo”. Another long driving day and I promise not to comment on the roads. The Masurian Lake Region has more than 2,000 lakes, which are the remnants of long vanished glaciers and surrounded by green hilly landscape. This is a lovely campground and our spot is right on the lake, calm and scenic. The campground is on Lake Niegocin in the town of Gizycko, the largest lakeside center in the region. We start off this next entry with our journey from Berlin to Krakow, Poland. This was going to be our first night train, but first, I'd like to explain something to you... As you all know, Sarah and I bought EuRail passes for our trip which covers most, but not all, of our choice countries. Poland is not one of these countries, so, we had to buy tickets for the Polish part of our journey. As well, for night trains you must make reservations and pay a little extra for either a couchette, sleeper, or a chair. For financial reasons, Sarah [View Full Entry]

Wednesday morning I took a tour: The three faces of Krakow. There was a female guide, there was a coach for 33 people and there were 3 passengers. 2 Norvegian women, 55 plus and myself. It were friendly women but one had a moustache and I was able not to ask during the 4 hours trip if she did not need a good shave. We saw Nowa Huta. A town built by the russians right after the war for the laborers of a new steelwork. 30.000 laborers. Now after privatisation 1000 with more output. We saw Kazimiers the former jewish district.
