Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Yesterday was the hell travel day. We had to undertake 14 hours on trains and trams to get from the National Park to Warsaw, only arriving into Warsaw at 9:30pm. However this didn't stop us from getting up nice and early this morning and heading out into Warsaw. The morning started off with a bang when we decided to check out the breakfast in the hotel which we had been told would cost us 20 Zolatys if we wanted to have it (as it wasn't included in the room rates). But the staff in the breakfast room didn't ask us for [View Full Entry]

Krakow is one of the largest and oldest cities in Poland, and is a popular tourist location, containing a World Heritage Site in the historic centre. Situated on the Vistula river, the city dates back to the 7th century. Kraków has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural and artistic life, and is one of Poland's most important economic centres. It was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Kraków from 1846 to 1918, and the capital of Kraków Voivodeship from the 14th century to 1999. The city has [View Full Entry]

I landed in Krakow and went to meet Arthur. It's been over a year since we last saw each other - we're both unchanged. It was SO wonderful to see him. He was glittering with excitement and as he walked me to his dorm, he gave me little history lessons and tidbits on things that we were passing. He also tried to teach me some basic Polish, just things to get me around, like hello and thank you and excuse me. We got to his dorm - literally, a dorm that was teeny-tiny - and I settled some things down. He [View Full Entry]

The Castle in Malbork was built in Prussia by the Teutonic Order as an Ordensburg. The Order named it Marienburg, literally "Mary's Castle". The town which grew around it was also named Marienburg, but since 1945 it is again, after 173 years, part of Poland and known as Malbork. The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress, and is the world’s largest brick gothic castle. UNESCO listed the castle and its museum as World Heritage Sites in December 1997 as Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork. It is one of two World Heritage Sites in the region with [View Full Entry]

Today we went to the Wieclezka Salt Mine. It was about a 20 minute bus trip to get there from Krakow. The mine was set up over 700 years ago. Profits from the mine helped fund a lot of the building projects for a long time. Today only about 50lbs of salt is extracted from the mine each day. That is because some brine (liquid with high concentration of salt) seaps into the mine and they collect the brine and extract the salt from it so that the mine does not flood. We went down about 380 steps to the first [View Full Entry]

Oldest Synagogue in Krakow
Yesterday May 15th, we visited the Jewish Quarter in Krakow. This was very cool. We had a tour of the oldest synagogue in all of Poland! (see picture) This was my first time in a synagogue too. We were not allowed to take pictures once we were inside. This synagogue is not active--but is actually a museum. They had many relics here that were used in the practice of Judaism. Something interesting that I learned is that women sit separately from men during a service. In this synagogue there was a separate women's room, but I believe in some synagogues [View Full Entry]

Today was a very rough day. We had our tour of Auschwitz. We went to the original camp at Auschwitz and then Auschwitz-Birkenau. It was about an hour bus ride to get there from Krakow. The camps have been made into memorials and museums, so they are heavily visited. There were many people there. We had our own tour guide to take us around. The tour guide has a microphone and they give you a headset so that you can actually hear what he is saying. This is important in a large group and also because there are a ton of [View Full Entry]
