Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Nowa Huta Creeper Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków
Against the better wishes of quite a few friends and natives, I took the tram to Nowa Huta to see the architecture and stuff. Had a creeper following me. So i fled Nowa huta and took solace in a coffee shop at the mall where the bathrooms were free and the surroundings were familiar. That evening, we went to a friend's house. [View Full Entry]

Dancing  Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków
Went to Marietzski and toured inside for the student rate. I took my time and it was a glorious church. I was not let down. Then I walked slowly around the Planty, and then headed back to Arthur's dorm for dinner and to prepare to go dancing with other couch surfers! It was a blast! [View Full Entry]

Are those missiles?

Yesterday was the hell travel day. We had to undertake 14 hours on trains and trams to get from the National Park to Warsaw, only arriving into Warsaw at 9:30pm. However this didn't stop us from getting up nice and early this morning and heading out into Warsaw. The morning started off with a bang when we decided to check out the breakfast in the hotel which we had been told would cost us 20 Zolatys if we wanted to have it (as it wasn't included in the room rates). But the staff in the breakfast room didn't ask us for [View Full Entry]

Krakow is one of the largest and oldest cities in Poland, and is a popular tourist location, containing a World Heritage Site in the historic centre. Situated on the Vistula river, the city dates back to the 7th century. Kraków has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural and artistic life, and is one of Poland's most important economic centres. It was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Kraków from 1846 to 1918, and the capital of Kraków Voivodeship from the 14th century to 1999. Witing for the train from the airport.
I landed in Krakow and went to meet Arthur. It's been over a year since we last saw each other - we're both unchanged. It was SO wonderful to see him. He was glittering with excitement and as he walked me to his dorm, he gave me little history lessons and tidbits on things that we were passing. He also tried to teach me some basic Polish, just things to get me around, like hello and thank you and excuse me. We got to his dorm - literally, a dorm that was teeny-tiny - and I settled some things down. He [View Full Entry]

So to anyone who has read my travel blog in the past, I last wrote in August of 2008. Since then, I have made some progress on my degree and am now ABD. The Castle in Malbork was built in Prussia by the Teutonic Order as an Ordensburg. The Order named it Marienburg, literally "Mary's Castle". The town which grew around it was also named Marienburg, but since 1945 it is again, after 173 years, part of Poland and known as Malbork. The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress, and is the world’s largest brick gothic castle. UNESCO listed the castle and its museum as World Heritage Sites in December 1997 as Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork. It is one of two World Heritage Sites in the region with [View Full Entry]
