Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

So there we were, avid readers, off to Zakopane, the southern Mountain town where both Kasia and Kazik’s parents live. This bus trip nearly had Aleks in nappies. She has been harping on about Zakopane since the day I met her. So for my giggling clapping co-pilot, Zakopane was like the Land of Oz: a place that she visited ten years ago, and still held memories of little log cabins and woodsmoke. She was in for a shock. More on that later. The bus trip itself was comfortable and uneventful, with the latter part of the trip consisting of Aleks grumbling [View Full Entry]

Well the sun lasted all of one day and its raining again. Raining for two weeks, what did we do to deserve this? Krakow is nice but the hostel was rubbish and we nearly got run over by a tram. The hostel was rubbish for a variety of reasons that we shall summarise: - Had to pay by cash, but wasnt told this - No cash machine - Nearest cash machine was in Krakow, 7km away, by taxi. - Spent the last of our cash to get more cash to pay for the room, whilst they held Sarah B's passport hostage. Gdansk, Poland - June 15th, 2009 We arrived in Gdansk after a 6 hour train ride from Szczeczin. As usual, we were greeted by heavy rain, and of course, we did not have a hostel reserved. So we set out on a mission to find some lodging. Easier said then done. A lot of the hostels were booked solid because it was a holiday. After wandering around for several hours in the rain we managed to find of all places, a barge on the river which was converted into a hostel. The place was decent, even though the room was about [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Krakow!! I arrived in krakow last evening at about 7 pm. it was a 10.5 hour train ride. it was nothing short of boring. it was slow as all hell, there were no fast trains on the route so it just took forever. and this old dude kept snoring in front of me so that made sleep just impossible. but i did get to see some polish countryside. it was alot like the midwest. i thought i was taking a train through Wisconsin for a while. Krakow is a cool place so far. i went out last night and [View Full Entry]

we're in warsaw! and we have just spent about 2 hours booking and unbooking things when we realised that infact countries are quite far apart. Really, i think our lives would be much simpler if places would just move a little bit nearer to each other when we wanted to use the train. However, we have now managed to finalise (i use the term loosely) a hostel in prague, a campsite in vienna and a hostel in salzburg so at least the sound of music excursion is safe! so rant over and back to today... it was sunny today! we found [View Full Entry]

Since a lot of my friends in Cairo wanted a taste of Poland, I decided to take on the task of cooking Polish food!?!? I thought it would be best if I had a Polish Party which would include food, drinks and music. When I told my mom that I was throwing a polish party she asked in a surprised tone, "Who is cooking the food!?" Growing up, I would always see my grandma spending hours in the kitchen cooking pierogi or golombki or other traditional polish dishes. It wasn't until I made golombki senior year of college that I realized [View Full Entry]

Definitely one of the most moving visits I have ever done. The first camp Auschwitz I doesn't seem as bad as the Birkenau one. Maybe because of the lack of the barracks and I guess it generally looks like a prison. It mainly consists of numerous buildings in which various prisoners were kept. It was the very first camp, so no specific idea was put forward, other than just locking up people who basically were "dangerous" for the Nazis. The Birkeanu camp however is definitely the worse one, out of the two. There are literally no signs of humanity whatsoever. All [View Full Entry]

Before I forget! We have a Polish mobile number: (+48) 518 672 494 and we’re 8 hours behind Australia. So, it’s week number 2 in Warsaw and we’ve still been running around and trying to see as much as we can of the things this city has to offer. The weather has improved a whole lot, with today’s temperatures reaching a divine 25 degrees. Hooray! So we ventured out again... We’ve seen dozens of churches, including the oldest in Warsaw - St Mary's Church built in the 15th century, which still shows the scars of fires that were set to it [View Full Entry]

Finally came the day I was looking for, our high school reunion. From Gdansk we drove to Wroclaw around 400 km. in 9 hours. Polish roads are horrible, but I could see everywhere road costructions, so there is a hope. So instead coming at 10pm. we arived after 12 at Krzysiu and Asia house. The next day we picked up Magda and Basia and 5 of us met rest of our old class in Szklarska Poreba to hike about 2 h. up the mountains. With us was our teacher with her husband. In my wildest dreams I have not expected to [View Full Entry]
