Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Are always beginnings so difficult? It took me some time to actually get my own blog. I've been traveling for quite a long time, I've already visited 24 countries but I never felt like getting a blog because of it. But eventually thanks to one of my friends I've realized that maybe it's not that bad idea! So there we are... In a few days I'm going to the States and then, if everything goes well, I'm leaving to China. And that means lots of pictures, adventures , thoughts and observations. Hopefully posts too! ;) See you on the road! [View Full Entry]

You're right. This blog has nothing to do with any of those things, as cool as they are. Aleks has decided that she is sick of writing the blogs about the times that nothing big and exciting is happening. We’ve reached a compromise (which essentially means I’ve acquiesced) and I’ll write the interlude blogs so Aleks can have a shot at the big time... things like Mazury and Croatia and all that really uninteresting piffle. It’s a big call for such a new-blood blog writer, but I reckon she’ll do a great job ;) Since arriving home from Krakow the this-and-that [View Full Entry]

I. just. spent. 24. hours. on. trains. On Saturday morning I left Amelie and her family in Toulouse, and set out for Paris again. I met my friend Walid there, who offered me his couch. After arriving around noon and a nice lunch, we did what any group of young, liberal, Parisians do... JOINED THE PARIS GAY PRIDE PARADE!! I haven't laughed and danced that much since... Valencia. We followed the AIDS/SIDA awareness float and dances with the gogo dancing men onboard. It was epic. After, we went to an epic ice cream place. I had one scoop of chocolate. Oh. [View Full Entry]

If this isn’t my best work, then you can blame Jacek and Co. for keeping me up all night. But I shall, as I always do, endeavour to engage my responders with style and aplomb. The morning of the move back to Krakow came, as mornings generally do, and with an early start once again. Having packed our stuff the night before, we were relatively well prepared to get on the move. So after paying out rent to the lovely lady who owned the set of apartments, we made our way slowly into town around 9am. Unfortunately for our intrepid adventurers, [View Full Entry]

It seems like every time I wake up, I have to write a blog. But the reality of the situation is that the days are flying by so fast I keep forgetting where we’re up to in the week. I promised I wouldn’t wait this long to write again, but circumstance would have it otherwise, and this time it wasn’t just me being a lazy bum. So without further ado, I bring to you… Krakow To Zakap… Zacko… The Pretty Mountain Town Leaping out of bed, fresh faced and full of life, we bounded into the spreading daylight with train tickets [View Full Entry]

Making Merry on the Train
Babcia Malina's with Kasia
Krakow

So there we were, avid readers, off to Zakopane, the southern Mountain town where both Kasia and Kazik’s parents live. This bus trip nearly had Aleks in nappies. She has been harping on about Zakopane since the day I met her. So for my giggling clapping co-pilot, Zakopane was like the Land of Oz: a place that she visited ten years ago, and still held memories of little log cabins and woodsmoke. She was in for a shock. More on that later. The bus trip itself was comfortable and uneventful, with the latter part of the trip consisting of Aleks grumbling [View Full Entry]

Well the sun lasted all of one day and its raining again. Raining for two weeks, what did we do to deserve this? Krakow is nice but the hostel was rubbish and we nearly got run over by a tram. The hostel was rubbish for a variety of reasons that we shall summarise: - Had to pay by cash, but wasnt told this - No cash machine - Nearest cash machine was in Krakow, 7km away, by taxi. - Spent the last of our cash to get more cash to pay for the room, whilst they held Sarah B's passport hostage. Gdansk, Poland - June 15th, 2009 We arrived in Gdansk after a 6 hour train ride from Szczeczin. As usual, we were greeted by heavy rain, and of course, we did not have a hostel reserved. So we set out on a mission to find some lodging. Easier said then done. A lot of the hostels were booked solid because it was a holiday. After wandering around for several hours in the rain we managed to find of all places, a barge on the river which was converted into a hostel. The place was decent, even though the room was about [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Krakow!! I arrived in krakow last evening at about 7 pm. it was a 10.5 hour train ride. it was nothing short of boring. it was slow as all hell, there were no fast trains on the route so it just took forever. and this old dude kept snoring in front of me so that made sleep just impossible. but i did get to see some polish countryside. it was alot like the midwest. i thought i was taking a train through Wisconsin for a while. Krakow is a cool place so far. i went out last night and [View Full Entry]
