Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Woke up before the alarm this morning, mostly because I didn't really sleep. I kept checking the time every hour or so until just before 4am when I decided to give up and just get up. Got my stuff, left the hostel and took a cab in the pouring rain to the night bus to Prestwick airport. The cab driver had me a little worried when he asked if I'd already gotten my bus ticket, and I'd said no. He said I might not get a seat on the bus, as he'd seen people being turned away on other occasions. Fortunately, [View Full Entry]

This is my third day in Warsaw. It's a large city, at times confusing, busy, but rather interesting. And certainly worth a few days visit. It takes that long just to figure out the buses and trams. And because Warsaw is a large city, you need to learn to use public transit, or walk for hours and hours. Even still, I seem to walk for long distances because in all my travels I have never seen bus stops so far apart; no kidding, each stop must be in excess of 400 m apart, at least a six and possibly more minutes [View Full Entry]

Zakopane, Poland - July 7th - 10th, 2009 After an uneventful 2.5 hour bus ride from Krakow, we arrived in Zakopane. We easily found our hostel and for the first time since Iceland had a private room with our very own shower and toilet! Fancy! Things you take for granted in normal life quickly become luxuries while traveling. The day we arrived we set out to see the town. Zakopane is a nice tourist town with one main street filled with bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, street entertainers and even working ponies that you can pet for a small price. The following [View Full Entry]

Krakow, Polska - July 3rd - 12th, 2009 For the first time since leaving London, we arrived at our destination and it was not raining on us. Instead it was very hot and humid... kind of made us wish it was still raining so it would be cooler. We got to our reserved hostel only to be told that it had been double booked! Fortunately this turned out to be a good thing as they sent us to another place closer to the town square, and they paid for the first night! We ended up in a great hostel, a [View Full Entry]

Warszawa, Polska, June 26th - July 1st, 2009 Our trip in Russia ended with us being back exactly where we started. No more booking so far ahead, as we do not like to follow a set schedule so strictly. We spent our first day in Warsaw doing absolutely nothing as planned. We had been on the road for almost a month and needed a day off from sightseeing to relax and recuperate. It wasn't till the late afternoon of our second day that we finally left the hostel to see some of the Polish capital city. Since the weather was not [View Full Entry]

7/11/09 Family - Our ride to Poland was interesting. At least we got on the right train, yet finding a sleeper car seat was difficult at best. Upon some advice of an English speaking German tourist, handing the conductor some cash resulted in access to the sleeper car which previously wasn’t available. At one stop at 2am, Jon filled in for the sleeping conductor to unlock the train door to allow other tourists to board. To our surprise, the tourists pointed at our compartment as being theirs. They were redirected to wake up the conductor for another compartment. We woke up [View Full Entry]

From the moment we arrived at the station in Budapest to head to Krakow, the problems started. For some reason we didn’t have a night car reservation (meaning a cabin); don’t ask why; we thought we did, but somehow the whole thing got lost in translation. The Hungarian train attendants were not impressed and we got dumped into ordinary run-of-the-mill 3rd class. This is a carriage with no beds - just seats. There were six of us in this small shoebox, and it was a tight fit. We were supposed to leave at 8pm, however the train didn’t leave until nearly [View Full Entry]

Packing, packing, packing... I hate that! The mess in my room is getting bigger and bigger and I still don't know how to start, what to take. For the first time it's so difficult and I really don't understand why. Maybe because I know I'm going alone and I need to be well prepared, maybe because it's the first time I'm going so far... No idea. What's more I'm begging to feel some kind of thrills and I just wonder if they are the result of fear or excitment... Or in fact maybe both. *** Pakowanie, pakowanie, pakowanie...
