Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

I will spend a total of 5 days in Krakow, and it's easy to fill up five days of things to do. Krakow is a beautiful city worth walking and wandering for hours and days, as well as time spent going into various buildings, churches and other tourist sights. I took a very hot and crowded train from Warsaw sharing a compartment with five Poles. An older gentleman was keen on talking, and did so in Polish with a younger man, but also with me in good English about a variety of subjects - health care, travels, Russia, the war and [View Full Entry]

I was hugged by the Count today. From Sesame Street. You know, "1, 2, ha, ha, ha, 3, 4, ha, ha, ha, ....". Okay, maybe he wasn't REALLY the count, but he was dressed up like him, and saw me taking his photo, so he came over and hugged me. Okay, let me backtrack.... An early start to the day, I was catching an 8am bus across town and was power-walking for about 20 min. in the heat to catch it on time. It was an hour and a half drive to Auschwitz, and of course, I slept. Once we got [View Full Entry]

Today was a long, hot day. I got up early, got ready and left with what I thought would be enough time to get my train pass (East Europe railpass) stamped and authorized and catch the 9:35am train to Krakow. Apparently not. I had to go to three different agents to find out which one had the stamp for my pass, and then had to wait in a line to speak to him, while other agents sat by idly. Nice. Anyway, I was finished at about 9:34 and ran to the train, where it was pulling out of the station. :( [View Full Entry]

Hello again, Last weekend was a blast. The beginning of the week we all met as a class in Letna Park and had a soccer game and a BBQ to celebrate the 4th and the Czech major holiday named after some dude. We had a few beers with the teachers and went to the pool. The pool is awesome, they have a really cool water slide and diving board. Best of all the women are topless and hot, never thought i would say that about a public place, Chase also learned how to do a gainer. Later in the week we [View Full Entry]

Woke up before the alarm this morning, mostly because I didn't really sleep. I kept checking the time every hour or so until just before 4am when I decided to give up and just get up. Got my stuff, left the hostel and took a cab in the pouring rain to the night bus to Prestwick airport. The cab driver had me a little worried when he asked if I'd already gotten my bus ticket, and I'd said no. He said I might not get a seat on the bus, as he'd seen people being turned away on other occasions. Fortunately, [View Full Entry]

This is my third day in Warsaw. It's a large city, at times confusing, busy, but rather interesting. And certainly worth a few days visit. It takes that long just to figure out the buses and trams. And because Warsaw is a large city, you need to learn to use public transit, or walk for hours and hours. Even still, I seem to walk for long distances because in all my travels I have never seen bus stops so far apart; no kidding, each stop must be in excess of 400 m apart, at least a six and possibly more minutes [View Full Entry]

Zakopane, Poland - July 7th - 10th, 2009 After an uneventful 2.5 hour bus ride from Krakow, we arrived in Zakopane. We easily found our hostel and for the first time since Iceland had a private room with our very own shower and toilet! Fancy! Things you take for granted in normal life quickly become luxuries while traveling. The day we arrived we set out to see the town. Zakopane is a nice tourist town with one main street filled with bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, street entertainers and even working ponies that you can pet for a small price. The following [View Full Entry]

Krakow, Polska - July 3rd - 12th, 2009 For the first time since leaving London, we arrived at our destination and it was not raining on us. Instead it was very hot and humid... kind of made us wish it was still raining so it would be cooler. We got to our reserved hostel only to be told that it had been double booked! Fortunately this turned out to be a good thing as they sent us to another place closer to the town square, and they paid for the first night! We ended up in a great hostel, a [View Full Entry]

Warszawa, Polska, June 26th - July 1st, 2009 Our trip in Russia ended with us being back exactly where we started. No more booking so far ahead, as we do not like to follow a set schedule so strictly. We spent our first day in Warsaw doing absolutely nothing as planned. We had been on the road for almost a month and needed a day off from sightseeing to relax and recuperate. It wasn't till the late afternoon of our second day that we finally left the hostel to see some of the Polish capital city. Since the weather was not [View Full Entry]
