Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

g'day We travelled from Latvia after some indecision whether we should stay in Vilnius a couple of nights but last minute decided to get on the overnight bus to Warsaw and from there straight to Krakow.. time and money running out fast!!! Its driving me mad the way everyone is saying things are soo cheap... "only 20euro", well its a lot in NZ dollars for god sake.. maybe its time to start earning euros again. We arrived in Krakow in the evening time a couple of nights ago with no accomodation booked which meant we had to walk an hour out [View Full Entry]

August 5, 2005 - August 8, 2005 Wow, what an adventure Krakow turned out being. From beginning to end, nothing ever really went at a comfortable pace. From the train ride in, to the weather, the nights out at the local clubs, our side trips to Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine; nothing really went according to plan. Surprisingly, the added ingredient of chaos really spiced up the visit and helped to make some unforgettable memories. The overnight train ride from Prague was miserable. Keith and I had really hoped to squeeze in some sleep along the way, but the travel [View Full Entry]

Im sorry that this entry is going to be so short. No photo could ever capture the essence of this festival. No words could ever describe the amount of peoples lives that were changed. I dont think my life will ever be the same. I have had so many realisations and have really re-evaluated everything in my life. I cant stand the thought of leaving Poland, it feels like I have such a family here, and it is such a purifying atmosphere. I wish that everyday was a Woodstock, I could never get tired of it. I had no idea of [View Full Entry]

Preparations Europe » Poland » Lubusz » Kostrzyn nad Odra
So we moved to a new town now. A new school. The schools here are pretty ugly! They are just big blocks of grey concrete with some small windows. It really makes me appreciate SCEGGS and all of the facilities we had there. I was trying to be positive about the new school environment, it wasnt that bad really, nothing i couldnt get used to. That was before i heard about the communal showers....... just one big room and we have about 150 girls on this tour. THe only thing that i could think about was that scene out of Schindlers [View Full Entry]

So today is the last day of our festivals here :( It is very sad, but it is also a good time now to relax and put our feet up for a bit. AS IF!!! No time for that. We get a day off and then we have to get hard at work for the Woodstock festival. Thats in about a weeks time - its a huge music concert over here in Poland. I dont really know what to compare it to back in Aus because i have never been to any concerts, but its a really big thing here. Ill [View Full Entry]

A Gypsy Lesson Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków
Hiya! I'm writing this entry from Krakow, an absolutely beautiful city in Poland. We have done so much since my last post, which wasn't too long ago so I'm not sure where to begin. We flew from Amsterdam to Berlin. Berlin was such a cool city. Our first day there we took an all day walking tour which was pretty much a 9 hour history lesson and saw most major sites of the city. Our guide was really great and my brain actually hurt when we were done from taking in so much info. The city is very interesting because it's [View Full Entry]
